Positional Production in 2021

For years, it was taken as a given that fantasy replacement level varied by position, such that a C, a SS, and a 1B with the same exact line would have different values because of how they compare to their peers. That has been challenged more often lately, especially in leagues that have multiple utility spots and no corner or middle infield spots, like standard Yahoo leagues. In Ottoneu, most people who create values are still assigning players a primary position, setting a replacement level for each position, and adjusting values for each player based on that. I went back to look at production by position, based on Ottoneu FanGraphs Points scoring, in 2021 to see how the positions compare. Is C really that much weaker than everyone else? Should you pay a premium for MI production? Is 1B much better than any other spot?

Chad Young’s Ottoneu FanGraphs Points OF Ranks

Having covered SP and the rest of the offensive positions, we are finishing up with OF ranks (I won’t be doing RP ranks, but keep an eye out for more on that). Outfield is the most strategically interesting position in Ottoneu, as there are so many options for how you approach the five OF spots. Go get two or even three big bats and stay cheap on the rest? Get five $10-$15 guys plus some depth? Load up on platoon bats? All viable options, and there are more.

Paul Sporer’s Top 100 Outfielders

Outfield is one of those positions that always feels deep just because of the star power at the top, but of course leagues generally require 3-5 starting OFs plus the many multi-positional players plucked from the OF pool to play other positions.

I’ll have an update in early March to account for any moves, news, and/or injuries. Let me know what you think in the comments: how are you building your OF plan? do you stack a few early on or play the middle tiers? who is your sleeper at the position?

Other positions:

Here’s my list.
