Brad Johnson Baseball Chat: 12/18/2018

by
December 18, 2018

Below is the transcript to today’s chat.

3:50
Brad Johnson: We’ll get started in a few minutes
3:58
Steven: Ottoneu points-style dynasty league. What kind of trade value, in terms of prospects, do you think these Dodgers pitchers have: Maeda, Wood, Stripling?
3:58
Brad Johnson: Maybe like a $2 Carter Kieboom
3:58
Brad Johnson: There are basically 2 types of prospects in ottoneu – monsters like Vladito and guys who don’t matter
3:58
Brad Johnson: Kieboom, if $2, is one of the few who lives in the space between.
3:59
Brad Johnson: I don’t think you can get a premium prospect for any of those guys

Brad Johnson Baseball Chat: 12/11/2018

by
December 11, 2018

We talked a lot about Andrew McCutchen and various Mets/Yankees/Marlins rumors. Then we talked about other topics. Here’s the transcript.

3:53
Brad Johnson: We’ll get started in a few minutes
3:57
Mets fans everywhere: Also, best baseball pun of the offseason is given the Mets track record, they’ll try to trade for Realmuto but end up with some fake muto.
4:00
John: Any former MLB players who missed all of 2018 (due to injury or playing out of the country)  that might surprise in 2019? (ala Miles Mikolas or Eric Thames a couple of years ago)
4:00
Brad Johnson: I don’t see anybody notable on the radar, heard about a couple return attempts, but they weren’t Thames/Mikolas caliber players
4:00
Brad Johnson: Or even Colby Lewis
4:01
Brad Johnson: I’m browsing 2017 leaderboards for guys who disappeared in 2018. Corey Seager and Dinelson Lamet spring to mind, although that’s probably not what you meant.

Brad Johnson Baseball Chat: 12/4/2018

by
December 4, 2018

Here is today’s chat transcript which coincided with the big Pat Corbin news.

3:13
Brad Johnson: Hey folks, sorry about the delay. I guess some part of me knew a simple doctor appointment would take 2 hours
3:14
Brad Johnson: We’ll get started in a moment.
3:17
Brad Johnson: Alright, let’s do this
3:17
Trevor: How many prospects is too many for an ottoneu team attempting to contend?
3:17
Brad Johnson: As is often the case, it really depends on context. I often operate with no more than 1-3.
3:18
Brad Johnson: I mostly acquire mine over the offseason for players I can no longer afford to keep. I’ll also try to scrounge whatever $1 guys get left over in the draft. I got Acuna and Soto this way, but that was pure luck.

Brad Johnson Baseball Chat: 11/6/2018

by
November 6, 2018

Here’s today’s chat transcript. Thanks for playing.

4:01
Brad Johnson: Good afternoon folks. Sporer says y’all are busy voting, but maybe that’s not true. Who wants a baseball break?
4:02
DJ Tanner: Dee Gordon in Ottoneu league, I have at $4. Not that I’m hopeful he turns it around, but thats a keep right?
4:02
Brad Johnson: I don’t think you’re ruin your season by keeping Gordon, but I only considered him a $1 player BEFORE he was terrible last season.
4:02
Brad Johnson: I’m assuming you’re talking about FGpts of course
4:03
Brad Johnson: In 5×5, he’s still a reasonably decent asset
4:03
Brad Johnson: By the way, I’m expecting maybe 10 or 15 of you to show up so feel free to give some back and forth, reactions to my comments, etc.

Brad Johnson Baseball Chat: 10/30/2018

by
October 30, 2018

Here is today’s chat transcript which started a little catcher heavy before moving on to other topics.

3:52
Brad Johnson: We’ll get started in a bit. Until then, a little self-promotion.
3:55
Brad Johnson: I’m doing custom fantasy games for my patrons this offseason. Future contests will have a prize of $50. This month’s contest is a simple Qualifying Offer Game with a $10 prize. There’s currently only a few entrees so a new $1/mo patron has a really decent chance to come out ahead.
3:55
Brad Johnson: https://www.patreon.com/posts/22372546
3:55
Brad Johnson: I also announced the first patron fantasy league, a 20 team dynasty that will begin slow drafting in December. Details are still up for discussion.
3:55
Brad Johnson: https://www.patreon.com/posts/22247095
3:56
Brad Johnson: On a completely different note, I began a free agent analysis series with a look at catchers.

Brad Johnson Baseball Chat: 10/23/2018

by
October 23, 2018

Here is today’s chat transcript:

3:58
Brad Johnson: Ahoy there. We’ll get started in a few minutes.
4:01
AJ Preller: I need a 3B (real life, not fantasy) and I’d prefer it if he was good. Who can flip me a third baseman for a catcher, or a corner outfielder, or a ton of pitching prospects?
4:01
Ebelin: All things equal and from a fantasy perspective, who’s the odd man out between Renfroe, Reyes and Cordero?
4:01
German: Is Wil Myers ever going to break out? I think I might’ve asked this for four straight years but here I am again.
4:01
Tokyo: What’s the earliest round you’d take Tatis and just stash him till he gets called up?
4:01
Brad Johnson: I am wise to your ways Padres fan!

Brad Johnson Baseball Chat: 10/16/2018

by
October 16, 2018

Here’s today’s chat transcript which turned out to be very ottoneu heavy. Fitting since arbitration started yesterday.

3:47
Brad Johnson: We’ll get started in 10 minutes or so. Try not to spam the queue. I’d like to have a little back and forth which is more easily achieved with fewer questions and more responses to those questions.
3:48
Brad Johnson: In other words, just ask one or two questions at a time.
3:57
CaptBaldy: What do you think J Aguilar does next year?  Also, have him for $1 in 12 team NL only 4×4 weekly league, should I be looking to trade him for something maybe more “stable” or keep him?
3:58
Brad Johnson: Well, I think you approach this in two ways. 1. You definitely plan to keep Aguilar for $1. 2. There’s nothing wrong with seeing if somebody else will buy high on his power.
3:59
Choose 3: T. Turner (NR),  JoRam (3), JDM (4), Benintendi (NR)
3:59
Brad Johnson: So Benintendi costs no pick?

Brad Johnson Baseball Chat: 10/9/2018

by
October 9, 2018

Great chat today. Here’s the transcript. Anyone wanna do me a favor and note down everything I said was going to be a future article?

3:55
Brad Johnson: We’ll get this started in a couple minutes.
3:56
Brad Johnson: I ask that you reserve your keeper questions until a more appropriate time. If you have to make them in October, by all means ask away.
3:56
Brad Johnson: But in general, you should wait to make those decision closer to your deadline. No need to fuss about it now.
3:57
Brad Johnson: Let’s have some fun with meatier topics, maybe get a little back and forth going.
3:58
Planet Dust: What’s Wander Franco up to right now?
3:58
Brad Johnson: Whence does Franco Wander?

Brad Johnson Baseball Chat: 10/2/2018

by
October 2, 2018

Behold, a transcript.

3:43
Brad Johnson: We’ll start in 10 minutes or so. I’m opening the queue a little early today.
3:54
Jackie: If you didn’t have a partner, would you be able to be solely a writer or would you need a “day” job?
3:55
Brad Johnson: I could make my income work – especially with either a roommate or by simply picking a cheap market to live. I’d have to make more of my own food, and I wouldn’t have much of a safety net. So I’d probably be hustling harder via some other income source.
3:56
Brad Johnson: Granted, I needed a lot of seed money to get this career off the ground, although I earned all that myself.
3:56
Tim: In a 10-team, Keep-5 H2H category league w/ OBP and OPS. You think Goldy is worth keeping at $45? How about Xander at $15?
3:57
Brad Johnson: They both look keepable to me absent other info. I think, ideally, you’d keep something cheaper than Goldy then redraft him or similar for $50.

Sunday Evening Fantasy Baseball Chat

by
September 30, 2018
7:30
Ryan: Where are you drafting Votto next year?
7:32
Jeff Zimmerman: That’s a tough one but I’m likely looking at the 5th round or later. The back worries me. He’s turned into prime Joe Mauer but without being catcher eligible.
7:32
Trent: Suarez is a top 3 third baseman next year.  True?
7:32
Jeff Zimmerman: One sec.
7:33
Jeff Zimmerman: Looking here: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1Y_4czFhvl97m1FgRGd3Fg0o_13pp2Z…
7:35
Jeff Zimmerman: He’s at least 6th behind Bregman, Arenado, Ramirez, Machado, and Bryant. The only one I could see an argument for being lower is Bryant
