Brad Johnson Baseball Chat: 8/7/2018

Here’s today’s chat transcript. We talked a number of topics including my repeated assertion that Juan Soto is not a first round pick next season. See you next week.

3:05
Brad Johnson: Good afternoon folks. We’ll get things started in a minute.

3:06
Kev: How am I supposed to trust BABIP with the shift? If a player like, Carlos Santana has a career low BABIP in 2018, do I chalk it up to bad luck or is it the result of shifting? How would I know?

3:07
Brad Johnson: It sounds like you’re oversimplifying your concept of BABIP.

3:08
Brad Johnson: The shift isn’t the only factor to consider. Santana is hitting more fly balls and infield flies with fewer line drives. All are significant changes that lead to a lower expected BABIP

3:08
Brad Johnson: Even before looking at shifts, I would expect a career low BABIP with these numbers.

3:08
Brad Johnson: Will his batted ball profile regress in a positive way? Perhaps.

Brad Johnson Baseball Chat: 7/31/2018

Here’s today’s chat transcript. Lots of deadline fallout to consider.

4:01
Brad Johnson: We’ll start in a moment here. By your silence, I assume you’re also staring at twitter waiting for surprise last-minute deals.

4:02
Dan: Hi!  Best new holds guy after the deadline?

4:02
Brad Johnson: Let me digest. Holds guys are already difficult to pin down

4:03
Brad Johnson: Mostly the guys who were good for holds before the deadline.

4:03
Brad Johnson: Pressly gets a boost

4:03
Watty: ROS?  Chris Taylor or Ian Kinsler for 2B?  (Position flexibility not a factor)

Paul Sporer’s Baseball Chat – July 26th, 2018

Transcript is below! Thanks for coming out!!

3:04

Paul Sporer: Hellloooo!!! Early chat this week (Thur instead of Fri), how’s it goin?

3:05

Good Steve: Ketel Marte or Paul DeJong ROS?

3:06

Paul Sporer: I’m going DeJong. I know Marte’s had a power surge, but I still prefer DeJong’s power

3:06

Eldridge Cleaver: Hello Dr. Paul!!!  Can you diagnose the monthly trend in Stanton’s flyball %?  He’s gone from ~38% to ~29% from May through July.  His career average is 40%!  Should we expect less home runs from him ROS?  Or are monthly swings like this normal and we should expect him to revert back to his career norms?  Seems like a fairly material change for a power hitter like him.

3:09

Paul Sporer: It is a difference, but I’m not sure it’s one that’s going to impact him *greatly* because he also doesn’t need as many flyballs for HR success given his park change

3:09

Larry Hutz: This time of year is the worst for closers, almost none are safe, fear strikes the heart of every owner. Which of these closers are most likely to be traded still: Kela, Greene, Yates, Rodney?

Brad Johnson Baseball Chat: 7/24/2018

We chatted! Transcript below. First, some generic advice. With a little over two months left in the season, forget about where players rank. All that matters is:

1. How do players you receive affect your chances of winning?
2. How do the players you give up affect your rivals chances of winning?

That’s really just about it. Keeper and dynasty formats have additional considerations, but those tend to be league specific.

4:01
Brad Johnson: Hey folks

4:01
Brad Johnson: Let’s get this started with a bad trade

4:01
Phamtastic: Brad I try to be open to all trades in my league but I cant help get a little irritated about this one. N.Goodrum, Eduardo Escobar, and N.Castellanos for Alex Bregman and Javy Baez. Am I just being overly dramatic here?  (14 team, H2H, 5×5, redraft) Thanks!

4:01
Brad Johnson: No, that’s an unconscionable trade

4:02
Brad Johnson: I assume the guy trading for Casty and Goodrum is a Tigers fan?

4:02
Brad Johnson: If not, then it’s extra super unconscionable
