During drafts, I try to target well-rounded hitters who aren’t one-trick ponies. The reason is that it’s easier to find balanced hitters to replace them when there is an injury. This week’s waiver wire is full of those well-rounded hitter replacements. As for pitchers, it’s another week of potential darts. who will be must starts in a week or two? The key is figuring out who differentiates themselves.

Not everyone is playing in a high-stakes NFBC league. Some of us are just trying to beat our family members, friends, or random strangers who have agreed to play fantasy baseball with us. In addition, not all of us are in deep leagues. Sometimes it’s hard getting even 10 people to pay enough attention to baseball for a full season to make your league competitive. If you just so happen to find yourself in one of these shallow leagues, like an ESPN or CBS league, where the stakes are low, the waiver wire is full of talent and everyone is bought in, consider yourself lucky. But, don’t consider yourself in an easy league.

For once, I’m more interested in the available starters compared to the hitters. Some interesting rookie pitchers (e.g. Poteet, Peacock, Davidson, Bubic) have emerged. While each has flaws, it’s likely one or two will emerge as a must-start arm.

There isn’t really an overlying theme for this week expect it seems many managers are just cleaning up their rosters of disappointing players. Since these unproductive players are being dropped, the list is barren of talent. Normally, I start with the same tought, but I end up finding a few hidden gems. Tauchman is the only one I might consider adding. I do spend some time in the append defining Trailing Drops and how it could drag down teams.

After a few weeks with just a few decent new starters, the list has expanded quite a bit this week. One note on the starters. Several of them are around a 9 K/9 and 3 BB/9. To differentiate them, I’m using their groundball rate. I’m not 100% sure this is the right approach in this environment, but I’ll investigate his idea later this week.
