Five Players to Watch Rest of the Way

As Augusts wanes and football starts to rev up, a large percentage of fantasy baseball players begin to lose interest. Whether it is because they are falling (or have fallen) out of contention in their redraft leagues or the long grind of 162 games have begun to wear them out, mid to late August is where people start to check out. Ottoneu 101: Trade Deadline

“The trade deadline is fast approaching.” – Hard to believe that time is here.  This season has flown by, hasn’t it? With just one week before rosters solidify for the final stretch, now is as good a time as ever to ensure new Ottoneu owners are fully prepared for the future, which is now fast becoming the off-season.  Joe recently outlined the mindset that’s needed to approach the trade deadline strategically, depending on your place in the standings, but since it’s also my job to cover Ottoneu on these pages, I’ll take a more mechanical look at what happens at this critical point in the season.

The Coldest Drops This Week 8/23: Yay or Nay?

Checking in on the hottest pickups this week is boring, because the players are already owned! More interesting, perhaps, are the players CBS fantasy owners are dropping en masse. Are owners overreacting to cold streaks or just dropping duds? I will exclude players on the DL.

The Hottest Pickups This Week 8/22: Yay or Nay?

Let’s take another gander at the week’s most popular pickups in CBS leagues. Are you fantasy owners crazy or uncovering diamonds in the rough?

What if Wil Myers Stopped Running?

According to ESPN’s Fantasy Player Rater, Wil Myers is ranked 3rd amongst all first basemen and 11th out of all hitters. There is no doubt he is having a great season and is finally living up to the lofty expectations set up for him since he was a minor leaguer. Much of his value, however, is derived from his 21 steals, which leads all of first basemen. The high steals has never really been in his repertoire before, so I wonder how much we should rely on this year’s numbers moving forward.

Mookie Betts and RBI Rates

Following the five home runs he hit in the last three Red Sox games entering Wednesday, Mookie Betts has quickly joined the AL MVP race. Mike Trout, Josh Donaldson, Jose Altuve, and Betts are the only four hitters in baseball with at least 6.0 WAR so far this season. That race may come down to contextual factors beyond his control, such as whether the Red Sox makes the playoffs, but however it unfolds, Betts has an even stronger chance of landing the fantasy MVP, ignoring draft positions. His combination of 28 home runs and 18 stolen bases is so rare in today’s game. Trout and Wil Myers are the only other players threatening the 30-20 club, and they’re both five home runs short of Betts at the moment.

Selling Danny Duffy

As you may recall, I jumped onto the Danny Duffy bandwagon rather early on, diving into his ability to sustain his relief velocity as a starter through his fifth start of the season. Since those first five starts, he has continued to pitch spectacularly, posting a 2.43 ERA (3.43 SIERA) and 21.5% K-BB%. But the good times eventually come to an end. And I think Duffy’s value has peaked and is in danger of experiencing a sharp decline.

Learning To Love Rotisserie Leagues Again

I first started playing fantasy baseball more than 20 years ago, and I have fond memories of calculating the scoring for the league I ran in middle school by hand using old Baseball Weekly’s (now known as Sports Weekly). Back then rotisserie leagues were synonymous with fantasy baseball, there weren’t really any other formats, the only distinction was using a 5×5 setup that incorporated runs and strikeouts versus the original 4×4 format. Rotisserie baseball was directly responsible for the current fantasy sports boom, but as I got older and other options became popular I found reasons to move away from the format.

Ben Paulsen and Nick Buss: Deep League Wire

There’s still about a quarter of the season left, which is more than enough time for standings to change dramatically. So if you’re hurting for offense in your deep league, here are two options to consider.
