The Coldest Drops This Week 8/23: Yay or Nay?

Checking in on the hottest pickups this week is boring, because the players are already owned! More interesting, perhaps, are the players CBS fantasy owners are dropping en masse. Are owners overreacting to cold streaks or just dropping duds? I will exclude players on the DL.

What if Wil Myers Stopped Running?

According to ESPN’s Fantasy Player Rater, Wil Myers is ranked 3rd amongst all first basemen and 11th out of all hitters. There is no doubt he is having a great season and is finally living up to the lofty expectations set up for him since he was a minor leaguer. Much of his value, however, is derived from his 21 steals, which leads all of first basemen. The high steals has never really been in his repertoire before, so I wonder how much we should rely on this year’s numbers moving forward.

Mookie Betts and RBI Rates

Following the five home runs he hit in the last three Red Sox games entering Wednesday, Mookie Betts has quickly joined the AL MVP race. Mike Trout, Josh Donaldson, Jose Altuve, and Betts are the only four hitters in baseball with at least 6.0 WAR so far this season. That race may come down to contextual factors beyond his control, such as whether the Red Sox makes the playoffs, but however it unfolds, Betts has an even stronger chance of landing the fantasy MVP, ignoring draft positions. His combination of 28 home runs and 18 stolen bases is so rare in today’s game. Trout and Wil Myers are the only other players threatening the 30-20 club, and they’re both five home runs short of Betts at the moment.

Since those first five starts, he has continued to pitch spectacularly, posting a 2.43 ERA (3.43 SIERA) and 21.5% K-BB%. But the good times eventually come to an end. And I think Duffy’s value has peaked and is in danger of experiencing a sharp decline.

Replacing Giancarlo Stanton

There, there, poor Giancarlo Stanton owner. Calmly walk to your bathroom, locate your tissue box and wipe those tears away. I did that before sitting down and typing this. Feel free to do the same and then return to continue reading this here article. So, naturally, Stanton has done his annual injury thing and this time it’s a severe groin strain that is expected to knock him out for the remainder of the season. Awesome.
