Prospect Stock Watch: Hjelle, Breaux, Jeffers, and others

With the MLB amateur draft just over two weeks away, the Prospect Stock Watch is checking in on some 2018 draft picks. A lot of attention is always paid on first-round picks so let’s have a look at some of the players that slipped out of the first round last year and landed in the second round. The players listed below have all had strong starts to their pro career and are great reminders that you can find strong prospect values in other rounds. All the players listed below should be monitored for future value in dynasty leagues and, eventually, redraft leagues.

Sean Hjelle, RHP, Giants: Hjelle has a massive frame at 6-foot-11 but he’s not a power pitcher. Still, low-A ball hitters have struggled to handle him. He’s struck out 44 batters in 40.2 innings while inducing ground balls at a high rate of two-to-one. It’s time for the Giants to challenge the right-hander with a promotion to high-A ball as he should be overpowering these young hitters after a three-year college career. He’s a name to file away and monitor over the next couple of years.

Always go YOLO +1

On the Agenda:
1. Various News and Notes
2. Streaming Pitching Options

Various News and Notes
Javy Baez left Sunday’s game with a heel injury. Baez injured the heel on a awkward play in the field, but played through the issue for a while before being removed. After the game he stated that the issue is not serious, so it looks like he will avoid the IL. Consider him day-to-day for now.

Wilmer Flores left Sunday’s game against the Giants with a foot injury. Flores injured the foot when he was hit by a pitch from Drew Pomeranz. X-rays on the foot came back negative and the injury is being characterized as a contusion. Consider him day-to-day at this time.

Gio Urshela left Sunday’s game after fouling off a pitch that hit him in the groin. Manager Aaron Boone said that the removal was precautionary and that he is expected to be fine.

George Springer left Sunday’s with lower back stiffness. Manager AJ Hinch stated after the game that Springer never got stiff and that he will not play on Monday. Consider him day-to-day until we have morte information.

Yasiel Puig left Sunday’s game with a shoulder injury after injuring himself on this awesome catch:

Puig is expected to undergo testing on Monday to reveal the extent of the injury, but the initial diagnosis is that it shouldn’t be a serious issue.

Yandy Diaz left Sunday’s game with a hand injury after being hit by a pitch. The injury was diagnosed as a contusion after x-rays came back negative for any fractures. He is considered day-to-day at this time.

Scott Kingery was activated from the 10-Day IL. Kingery is recovered from the hamstring injury that sent him to the IL. Kingery was on fire before getting hurt, hitting .406/.457/.719 with two home runs and a stolen base. He will likely start off in a reserve role, but should see at bats at multiple positions which will give him enough at bats to be worthy of a pick up in most formats.

Streaming Pitching Options (Less than 50% owned)
Pitcher for Today: None

High Risk Options: Mike Leake at TEX
The Rangers offense is overlooked too often since it is actually pretty good, but Leake has been pitching well as of late. This feels like a trap…

Pitcher for Tomorrow: None

High Risk Options: Lance Lynn vs SEA
Lynn gets has been hit or miss this season and gets a Mariners team that isn’t playing nearly as well as it was a few weeks ago.

Week 9 FAAB Projections

This week’s mixed league FAAB run, especially in The NFBC where Corbin Martin is still available, will have the most money spent that I can ever remember. It reminds of an Only league at the trade deadline. There are just so many moving parts. I’m going to try to cover it all but let me know if any questions come up and I’ll try to answer them.

The guidelines:

  • The ownership rates are from CBS since they have some quickdraw waiver wire leagues where players can be picked up at any time.
  • The FAAB estimates are based on the 2018 15-team mixed NFBC leagues which used a $1000 FAAB budget. Owners are going to need to convert these values to their own league.
  • The ownership values were taken from Saturday and lots can happen in between when they publish and FAAB bids run.
  • Only players owned in 50% or fewer of CBS leagues are examined.
