Choose Your Left-Handed Starters Wisely

With the trade deadline behind us and only the dog days of August/September standing in the way of fantasy championships, let’s start taking a more targeted approach to our pitching matchups, with each one we choose, whether stud or streamer, carrying even more weight as the season winds down.

We’ll do this by first looking at how each team has fared by the handedness of the pitcher faced, starting with those wily left-handers and ranking teams in wOBA, xwOBA, wOBA/xwOBA (on contact), SwStr%, Whiff%, and BB%. Baseball can always baseball at any given time but looking at these ranks gives us a good starting point for how teams have generally succeeded (or failed) against certain hands, both in overall damage and whiffs. Deadline Deals: A Dozen Value Decliners

Just to be clear, the following players are far from the worst players traded. I’m focusing on the guys moving down in value. Some might be having great seasons (e.g. Brandon Drury) but have the biggest down arrows attached to them.

1. Raisel Iglesias (ATL): Simply, Iglesias will back up Kenley Jansen. With Jansen not being able to go back-to-back games and his propensity to get injured, Iglesias (4.04 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, 12.1 K/9), Iglesias should remain rostered in deeper formats. Read the rest of this entry »

Paul Sporer’s Weekly Chat – August 3rd, 2022

Transcript is live!

1:01

Paul Sporer: Hello everyone! Are we recovering from the frenzy?

1:01

Walker Buehler: Level of concern about my injury for next season?

1:01

Paul Sporer: Too early to say.

1:01

Chuck: Is it time to give up on Castellanos?

1:03

Paul Sporer: Definitely depends who you’re picking up for him, but my goodness has he been bad! Given the substantial fall off and just utter lack of power, it’s hard not to think he’s playing through something, right? His skills didn’t just melt, right?! At any rate, I understand moving on in shallower formats

1:03

Chuck: Do you believe in Detmers’ recent surge? Apparently he tweaked his slider during his recent sojourn in Salt Lake.

Deadline Deals: A Dozen Value Gainers

Just to be clear, the following players are far from the best players involved. I’m focusing on the guys moving up in value. Some might not even be in play in most leagues (e.g. Reds outfield) but have the biggest up arrows attached to them.

1. Félix Bautista (BAL): Of the bullpen changes, Bautista seems the most likely to get the bulk of the Saves with Jorge López gone even though others releivers could be involved.

I see the other being treated like Bautista was before the trade when he got three Saves.

On the season, Bautista has been great with a 1.66 ERA (2.77 xFIP), 11.6 K/9, and 0.88 WHIP. Looking across various shallow platforms (12-teams or fewer), he seems to be about 50% available. Read the rest of this entry »

Deadline Deals: Hader, Montas, and Mancini

Stan Szeto-USA TODAY Sports

Jeff and I will be covering the fantasy impact of the deadline deals over the next couple days!

WOW!!! Who had Hader getting dealt?? Put your hand down, no you didn’t. Nobody did!! This stunner feels particularly crazy because Milwaukee sits with a 3-game lead in the Central right now, but when we dig in deeper, you that both lefty relievers are coming off horrendous Julys and while Hader is the much more dominant arm (42% to 28% K rate), they haven’t been that different on the whole this year.

Big Kid Adds (8/1/22)

While the NFBC Main Event garners most of the attention, there are a handful of leagues with even a larger entry fee ($2.5K to $15K). They get originally named “High Stakes Leagues” and this year there are nine of them. With so much money on the line, these fantasy managers are going to try to gain any advantage. Most of the time, these managers will be a week or two ahead of everyone else on their adds. Here are the players and some information on the ones added in five or more of these leagues: Read the rest of this entry »
