It’s catcher week with eight of them seeing their rostership jump. Otherwise, it’s a lot of the same players who are slowly seeing their rostership climb.

For this week, fantasy managers should find hitting replacements for injured or demoted players and then focus their attention on the starting pitching replacements. Several pitchers are improving while a couple more have new roles. Rarely do this many starters pop-up mid-season so roster some now. Finally, it’s not a week to speculate on Saves. No bullpens are in flux, so any Sunday blowups will be the focus.

During drafts, I try to target well-rounded hitters who aren’t one-trick ponies. The reason is that it’s easier to find balanced hitters to replace them when there is an injury. This week’s waiver wire is full of those well-rounded hitter replacements. As for pitchers, it’s another week of potential darts. who will be must starts in a week or two? The key is figuring out who differentiates themselves.

A few guys I like (Heredia, Kim, and Webb) are available, but it seemed like catchers dominated this week’s drops. Additionally, it’s mainly hitters who no long have playing time.

For once, I’m more interested in the available starters compared to the hitters. Some interesting rookie pitchers (e.g. Poteet, Peacock, Davidson, Bubic) have emerged. While each has flaws, it’s likely one or two will emerge as a must-start arm.

This week’s theme seems to be closers. Several full and part-time closers hit the waiver wire. While they all have a wart or two, a team scavenging for Saves could find a few more offers on the waiver wire.

After a few weeks with just a few decent new starters, the list has expanded quite a bit this week. One note on the starters. Several of them are around a 9 K/9 and 3 BB/9. To differentiate them, I’m using their groundball rate. I’m not 100% sure this is the right approach in this environment, but I’ll investigate his idea later this week.

Like most weeks, 90%+ of the drops are reasonable, but a few players might be worth adding next week. Starting pitching remains the area to dive in a little deeper to determine if blowups are BABIP driven or if there is a deeper issue.

I feel like I write up the same hitters every week and they slowly creep over my 40% threshold. Almost all of them are over 95% owned in my 15-team leagues. The deal is that after going over the lineups, there hasn’t been much turnover from the minors. Additionally, not many difference-making pitchers on the wire. It might be time to focus on adding minor league prospects.
