Trade Deadline Value Adjustments: Hitters

I ranked all trade deadline-affected batters (Paul is doing the pitchers) by how much their 2023 redraft league fantasy value increased or decreased (NOT OVERALL VALUE). The list includes every traded hitter (back to July 21st) and those guys who saw changes in value but stayed with their team.

Value Up

Jeimer Candelario (WSN->CHC): Team and park upgrade along with him playing first base.

Carlos Santana (PIT->MIL): Milwaukee’s first base job is his.

Elvis Andrus (CHW) and Yoán Moncada (CWS): Burger is no longer blocking either one of them.

Gabriel Arias (CLE): Since the team traded away Rosario, Arias has started in five of six games..

Mark Canha (NYM->MIL): For now, Canha slots right into the DH spot. The problem is that Anderson (on rehab), Winker, and Tellez are all injured but expected to return. Once the team starts getting healthy, who sits?

Jordan Diaz (OAK): No longer has Peterson taking away at-bats.

Jake Alu (WSN) and Ildemaro Vargas (WSN): Someone has to play third base for the Nats. Alu got the start on Tuesday and he has 16 SB in AAA.

Michael Toglia (COL), Elehuris Montero COL), and Nolan Jones (COL): I’m not exactly sure how the playing time will work out in Colorado but these three are probably the beneficiaries.

Josh Rojas (ARI->SEA) and José Caballero (SEA): Both weren’t playing that much (Rojas in the minors), but with Wong released some playing time opened up.

Rafael Ortega (NYM) and DJ Stewart (NYM): Both started in the outfield after the trades of Canha and Pham. Ortega can steal a few bases (14 in AAA) with some power (9 HR).

Alfonso Rivas (SDP->PIT) and Connor Joe (PIT): With Choi and Santana being traded away, the pair can fight for time at first base.

Ji Man Choi (PIT->SDP): Was a part-time bat in Pittsburgh but should be on the strong side of a platoon with Carpenter or Cooper.

Kyle Manzardo (TBR->CLE) and all Cleveland hitters: Manzardo could take over at first base or DH for the Guardians with Bell on the move. Or the team could cycle players through the open spot. Someone is going to get those at-bats.

Rodolfo Castro (PIT->PHI): Should be in the majors now as a short-side platoon bat (career .900 OPS vs LHP, .569 vs RHP).

Michael Massey (KCR) and Maikel Garcia (KCR): A small uptick in playing time with Lopez out of the way.

Nolan Gorman (STL), José Fermín (STL), Taylor Motter 모터 (STL), and Masyn Winn (STL): Someone has to play second base or shortstop (Edman has the other one) in St. Louis.

Nelson Velázquez (CHC->KCR): While the Royals still have quite of outfield options, the talent Velázquez has to jump over with the Royals is less than that with the Cubs.

Korey Lee (HOU->CHW): Lee is a good bat who could move into the backup role with the White Sox.

Same Value

Jake McCarthy (ARI), Lourdes Gurriel Jr. (ARI), Alek Thomas (ARI), and Tommy Pham (NYM->ARI): Within the last month, all four were in a timeshare and they remain that way.

AJ Pollock (SEA->SFG): Was a platoon bat in Seattle and will have the same job in San Francisco.

Luis Urías (MIL->BOS): He was in AAA with the Brewers and now he’s in AAA with the Red Sox.

Remain irrelevant fantasy options:

Remaining AAA Players who could be promoted.

Value Down

Jake Burger (CHW->MIA): Park downgrade and might not get second base eligibly now (5 games).

Dominic Canzone (ARI->SEA): He was getting near full-time plate appearances in Arizona but the playing time with the Mariners is not set (at DH in his first game). Also, it is a major park downgrade.

Randal Grichuk (COL->LAA) and Mickey Moniak (LAA): Downgrade in the park for Grichuk. Also, when Trout comes off the IL, Moniak should never face lefties (career .273 OPS vs LHP).

Josh Bell (CLE->MIA): Major park downgrade.

C.J. Cron (COL->LAA): Leaves Colorado and moved to a time share since Ohtani has a strangle hold on the DH job.

Mike MoustakasTrey CabbageEduardo EscobarBrandon DruryAnthony Rendon: With the addition of Cron, there is just one more mouth to feed.

Garrett Cooper (MIA->SDP): He was getting full-time at-bats with Miami but is likely a bench bat in San Diego.

Miguel Rojas (LAD), Chris Taylor (LAD), Amed Rosario (CLE->LAD) and Enrique Hernández (BOS->LAD): All four move from full-time roles to sharing two spots.

Paul DeJong (STL->TOR): While he could get a few starts at shortstop with Bo Bichette on the IL, I suspect he’s just a bench bat.

Jace Peterson (OAK->ARI): Goes from starting to a bench role.

Matt Mervis (CHC): Oh, the hype around him during the Arizona Fall League.

Minor league hitters who are too far from the majors to matter this season.
