Recommendations for Roto 5×5 Leagues

Intro

The chart includes their performance for 2026, their opponent’s wOBA versus the pitcher’s handedness, and recently added opponent’s K% (also v. SP handedness), my general start/sit recommendation for 10-team, 12-team, and 15-team (or more) leagues – essentially a shallow, medium, deep league setup – and then a note about some, most, or all depending on the day. If a pitcher only has an “x” in 15-team, it doesn’t mean there’s no potential use in 10s and 12s, but it’s a much riskier stream for those spots.

These are general recommendations for standard 5×5 roto leagues, and your league situation will carry more weight whether you are protecting ratios or chasing counting numbers. I usually won’t have much to write about aces who are locked into our rotations. If you want to discuss someone further, please feel free to leave a comment. I usually do a few sweeps of the comments before game time in case there are time-sensitive questions.

Wind:
Wrigley – 9 out to center
LAD – out to R center at 9. Threshold is usually 10 but Dodger Stadium is the best HR park in baseball and this is pretty much the same wind as last night when the Cards hit 5 bombs. Obviously the Dodgers are throwing a better arm out there tonight but the Cards decidedly are not.

Rain:
WAS – 30% to start, 60% to end and after the game. Both teams off tomorrow. The Braves only have to go to PHI for their next series on Fri which is a short hop but the Nats are off to LA on Fri which is a haul. The only remaining common off day is Sept 17th which would be horribly inconvenient for the Braves who are in the middle of a road trip going from Chicago to Houston. I’m guessing they do everything possible to get this game in.

PIT – 31% to start but dropping to 8% by game’s end
CLE – 10% to start, 32% by game’s end
MIN, Wrigley, Coors – slight chances

So up in the air with Roupp today. He’s been so insanely inconsistent and the Pirates just hung 9 on Webb yesterday. They run out 4 LH batters and 2 switch-hitters (neither of whom has appreciable platoon splits) so lots of platoon considerations.

Here’s an interesting 2026 split for Roupp:

Home vs LH: .251 wOBA
Home vs RH: .314

Road vs LH: .335
Road vs RH: .296

And his career numbers are pretty similar. So his platoon splits completely flip road vs home. He has clearly figured out how to take advantage of Oracle Park. PNC doesn’t give up many HR but overall is a slight hitter’s park because it’s good for hitters for everything else.

OTOH, while the Pirates are 2nd in wOBA vs RHP on the season, they’re 23rd over the last 30 days and they strike out a lot no matter who is up there throwing or what time period you talk about.

I have Roupp in a weekly HxH with playoffs and we’re in the 1st week of the playoffs and I am off to a monster start on the pitching side the last 2 days (5 QS, 4 W, tons of Ks with sparkling ratios to match) so it’d be easy to bench him but I’m also a Roupp believer because he looks so good when he’s on.

So, so, so on the fence about this one. . . .

i think Painter is a comfortable start for 12 team, his stuff, specifically fastball, looks back, and he’s only had one bad start in his last 6 since being called back up.

The problem for Painter has been commanding his stuff in the first inning. Since his return to Philly, 12 of his 14 runs have come in the first inning. Last time out he had two walks and two wild pitches in the first inning and then no hits over the next five innings. Very similar to his other recent starts.
