The Rays keep winning! Drew Rasmussen earned his 12th of the season, allowing two earned runs on four hits, one walk, and three punchouts in an 8-4 victory over the Athletics in Sacramento. Strong-side platoon cleanup hitter Liam Hicks crushed his 16th homer of the season, his second in five starts with the Rays.

The Jack Perkins experiment as starter hasn’t been going well. He threw 97 pitches over five innings, serving up six earned runs (seven total) on 12 hits, ballooning his ERA up to 7.27. If he remains in the A’s rotation, his next start would be next Tuesday in Kansas City. “He’s a drop in all formats”, says Captain Obvious.

San Francisco Giants righty Adrian Houser threw a rare gem on Wednesday: 6 IP – 2 H – 0 ER – 1 B – 5 K. The Giants had a 1-0 lead through seven innings. The Astros scored one in the seventh and then scored the go-ahead run in the eighth. Keaton Winn took the loss and blew his third save chance. Josh Hader recorded his 17th save of the season, needing just eight pitches for a clean ninth inning. Hader’s ERA is a sparkling 0.96.

St. Louis Cardinals pitcher Kyle Leahy outdueled the great Zack Wheeler. Leahy allowed one run on six hits with no walks and six punchies for his ninth win of the season. Leahy hasn’t allowed more than two runs in a start since June 17. The Cardinals beat the Phillies 7-1, scoring four runs on Wheeler in the fifth.

Better late than never! It’s his 11th season, but Alex Bregman finally had his first three-homer game.

There were six solo shots in the Mets-Braves tilt on Wednesday:

For the Mets: Bo Bichette (12), Luis Robert Jr. (6), and Luis Torrens (5)

For the Braves: Austin Riley (15), Mike Yastrzemski (9), and Lane Thomas (11)

Tyler Mahle’s second start with the Braves went very well (6 IP – 4 H – 1 ER – 0 BB – 7 K). Almost as good as his first one (6 IP – 3 H – 0 ER – 2 BB – 9 K).

Various News and Notes

A freaky incident in the Dodgers-Royals game as Freddie Freeman chased a foul ball, fell and tripped into the Royals dugout. He’s sore but but will ok.

Texas Rangers righty Jack Leiter, who had surgery on his right ankle in June, is expected to start a rehab assignment in Triple-A on Thursday. We don’t know yet if Leiter will return directly to the rotation when activated, but he will require several minor-league starts before returning.

Boston Red Sox top setup man Garrett Whitlock is dealing with elbow inflammation and will undergo testing on Wednesday to see if an IL stint is required. Whitlock is in the midst of an excellent season: a 2.05 ERA, 0.89 WHIP and a 25% K-BB%.

After being cut by the Atlanta Braves, Jorge Mateo signed a Major League contract with the Tampa Bay Rays. He should factor in on the short-side infield platoon immediately.

Detroit Tigers outfielder and cleanup hitter Riley Greene was placed on the injured list with a hamstring strain. The Tigers promoted 30-year-old veteran, Corey Julks, who hit .273 with 15 homers, 54 runs batted in and nine stolen bases in 366 plate appearances.

Kyle Karros suffered a concussion and was placed on the 7-day IL. Willi Castro should shift over to the hot corner for the next week. Adael Amador was recalled from Triple-A.

Miles Mikolas was finally designated for assignment by the Washington Nationals. He had been on a particularly bad stretch where he allowed at least nine hits and four earned runs in five of 10. His 5.13 ERA since the start of the 2023 season ranks seventh-worst among qualified pitchers. Two of the other six were also Nationals pitchers (Patrick Corbin 5.16, Mitchell Parker 5.19), two others are/were Rockies (Kyle Freeland 5.47, Austin Gomber 5.47), Chris Flexen 플렉센 (5.32) played on four different teams, and Chris Paddack 페덱, the worst of all (5.52) played for five different teams. Mikolas has pitched the 11th-most innings since 2023 (645.1). Logan Webb is the leader (760.2 IP), with almost 50 innings more than Framber Valdez (693) who has pitched the next most.

The Toronto Blue Jays claimed failed Diamondbacks closer Paul Sewald off waivers. Yeah, good luck with that.

Streaming Pitchers (Under 50% on Yahoo)

Pitcher for Today: Keider Montero, DET (36%) vs. CLE

The Tigers will be home underdogs and the projected run total opened at 8.5, so the roto gods don’t appear to be on Montero’s side. They have been so far as he rocks a 3.38 ERA, but with peripherals more than a run higher, along with a subpar 17.6% walk rate. There are only nine games and most of the starters are over 50% rostered, so there isn’t much to choose from.

Other Options: None, unless you have strong vibes about Tyler Phillips with the Marlins as home underdogs against the Pirates. Phillips hasn’t reached the five-inning mark in four of his last seven games.

Pitcher for Tomorrow: Landen Roupp, SF (36%) vs. COL

Roupp has had a bit of a rough stretch, walking nine batters in his last two starts. There’s no better way to boost a pitcher’s confidence than a matchup with the “road” Rockies.

Other Options: Jackson Jobe, DET (31%) vs. CHW

Jobe posted a sub-2.00 ERA in five rehab starts then threw five scoreless innings against the Giants in his first Major League start since May of 2025. This may be a bit of a tougher test, but the White Sox offense has been reeling of late and might be running into a juggernaut here in Jobe.
