Recalculating Player Value: Jansen, Turner, & Weaver

With the season underway, owners need to start adjusting some player’s fantasy value. Some of the tweaks can be from talent changes (e.g. increase in talent) or role (e.g. moving for a long reliever to starter). Three players, Kenley Jansen, Trea Turner, and Luke Weaver, are three such players on the move.

The AL East is loaded with talent at both the big league and minor league levels. And the minor league talent is well-distributed throughout each club’s system from top to bottom. Most clubs, with Boston potentially being the anomaly, could receive significant impacts from their systems in 2018.

Bullpen Report: April 9th, 2018

It’s certainly been a rough start to the season for Kenley Jansen thus far, but on Sunday the 30-year old was finally able to notch his first save of the season in the 10th inning against the Giants. He faced four batters, with all three outs coming via strikeout. Hunter Pence laced a one-out single and stole second base after a Brandon Crawford strikeout, but nothing came of it after Jansen caught Brandon Belt looking at strike three to end the game.

2018 Starting Pitcher GB% Surgers

Though the leaguewide HR/FB rate is down (likely due in part to the cold weather), it’s clear that this fly ball revolution is here to stay. That’s bad news for fly ball pitchers, because now more of their fly balls are going to jump over the wall for a home run. The best way to keep your HR/9 rate in check is by inducing grounders. So let’s check in on the early starting pitcher ground ball rate surgers.

Bullpen Report: April, 7th 2018

As we enter the weekend, the Milwaukee bullpen continues to be the most volatile situation to speculate for saves. The word from the Brewers today regarding Corey Knebel was unfortunately bad news. According to the Milwaukee manager, Craig Counsell, Knebel will miss “a minimum of six weeks” with his left hamstring strain. For those who missed the injury, it was a lot worse than it sounds. Knebel fell to the ground after delivering a pitch in the 9th inning down 6 to 0 in Thursday night’s game against the Cubs.

Paul Sporer Baseball Chat – April 6th, 2018

Here’s the transcript from Friday. Lots of Reynaldo Lopez and Nick Pivetta!

2:15

Paul Sporer: Hello, everyone!! Welcome to the chat!

2:16

Senta: Patrick Corbin a 10-team hold (as opposed to stream) now?   If so, any of these players you’d drop to add him?:  Yonder, Brach, Kingery.  Thanks!

2:17

Paul Sporer: Ya I think we gotta hold him in all formats. Corbin is throwing his slider a TON and getting big results (42% K, 18% SwStr). It won’t stay this great, but he’s also not a fluke

2:19

Big Tuna: Is Chase Anderson’s velo drop concerning?

2:20

Paul Sporer: A little in that I was going to be watching his velo early on anyway just to see if he held the ’17 gains

2:20

SiscoKid: What kind of upside to Newcomb and Gohara have?
