Roto Riteup: September 15, 2015

Today’s Roto Riteup was penned while I listened to my vinyl of Brand New’s Your Favorite Weapon. If that isn’t the closest thing to a hipster-esque sentence written here at FanGraphs, I don’t know what is. Something from Cistulli, maybe.

On today’s agenda:
1. Chase Anderson’s innings limit
2. Quick thoughts on Wilin Rosario
3. Streaming Pitching Options

MASH Report (9/14/15)

Troy Tulowitzki is expected to miss two to three weeks with a cracked shoulder.

Toronto won’t definitively know whether Tulowitzki can make it back for at least another week. His progress will be closely monitored, and not only does the bone have to heal, but some internal bleeding has to subside and the muscles need to recover.

“I think there is a chance,” Blue Jays general manager Alex Anthopoulos said Sunday morning. “Just talking to the doctors, they do think it is a little early to try to set a timetable on it.

“We’ll know more in the next few days, but if they had to guess, and it really is only a guess at this point, could be two to three weeks and then he could be back for October. Hopefully we’re playing at that time. That’s really all we have, but we’ll know more as the next few days come along.”

To me, it sounds like they have no clue when he will be back. I went and looked through my injury databases and only found one player who had a fracture in his shoulder. Carlos Gomez missed 37 games in 2011 because of a fractured shoulder.

But Wait, There’s More!…Guys Who Can Help You Win

With trade deadlines well in the rear-view mirror, the only way to bolster fantasy teams at this point in the season is via the waiver wire. Fortunately, we here at Rotographs have you covered in this regard. A couple weeks ago, Adam McFadden wrote about a bunch of underowned players, which spawned my own column on the topic. Steven Shumansky expanded our list even further last week, and I’ve still managed to find four players — owned in 20% or fewer leagues on Yahoo! — to recommend for those of you trying to pad your power or speed numbers down the stretch.

Getting Aggressive (or not) in the H2H Post-Season

Flags fly forever, or so they say. And yet…not really. I mean, they kind of do, but how many Giants fans out there are like, “Eh, we had our run, good on the Dodgers!” Right.

So in fantasy, particularly keeper or dynasty leagues, you have to make a tough call when that title is in reach – how do you maximize your chances at that eternal flag without ensuring a collapse the next year? I am struggling with a situation right now that puts that balance to the test.

Three Troy Tulowitzki Replacement Options

I should have known. I was thrilled to have acquired Troy Tulowitzki upon his entrance into the American League at the trade deadline in AL Tout Wars. I crossed my fingers that he would remain healthy, and productive, for the several months on my squad. That wasn’t to be. Naturally, it was a freak injury that has now sidelined him, causing his many fantasy owners to groan and think to themselves “of course this happened to him”.

If you missed the news, Tulowitzki suffered a bruised back and a cracked left shoulder blade, with the best case scenario having him returning in two to three weeks. Since that means there’s a very real chance he’s done for the season, or makes it back for just a couple of games, it’s time to search for a replacement. My American League only options are pathetic. But yours might not be. So here are a couple of shortstop eligible hitters owned in fewer than 50% of leagues that could make up for at least some of the lost production.

Bullpen Report: Sunday, September 13, 2015

Mike Scioscia called on Huston Street for a third consecutive game, and he was not able to hold a three-run lead against the Astros, as the roof caved in and he surrendered five runs, all earned including a pair of homers. Joe Smith and Trevor Gott were strong, earning their 32nd and tenth holds respectively. Street sat 89.9 with the sinker, and generated four whiffs from the 13 of them that he threw. The pitch that Jed Lowrie hit out appeared to be a change that Street left up and in. Just an awful spot for a changeup. The ball just landed beyond Kole Calhoun’s outstretched glove, as he appeared to get hung up on the wall on his jump. You know Street will be back out there the next time the Angels need a save, unless it’s in Seattle tomorrow as he’s pitched three days in a row. Joe Smith has also pitched three days in a row, so Fernando Salas would be next in line if an opportunity arises tomorrow.
