MASH Report

Jose Fernandez will likely go on the DL later today with a strained bicep. Less than 10 previous pitchers (2002 to 2014) officially going on the DL with a strained bicep and their median and average return times was 25 days.

Denard Span may be getting to the droppable in redraft leagues with his personal return time being the playoffs.

Span was able to run sprints and play catch without problem Saturday. He may go to the team’s complex in Viera, Fla., next week to continue baseball activities.

There are days when Span doesn’t know if he is going to play in the second half of the season. But when he has a day like Saturday, he believes he can make it back for the postseason push. There is no timetable on when Span will return to action.

Even if he does returns this season for a bit, do we know if he will be productive? I doubt it.

Howie Kendrick will likely go on the DL today with a pulled hamstring.

The Universally Available Derek Dietrich

Every year, there are players who — for whatever reason — go completely overlooked in fantasy leagues, despite providing solid value. This year is no different. For today’s example, take Derek Dietrich.

The 26-year-old has been highly productive since his call-up in mid-June, hitting a robust .261/.368/.504 with seven homers in 136 plate appearances. However, his ownership rates remain miniscule (1% Yahoo, 1.9% ESPN, 4% CBS).

Sophomore Report: d’Arnaud, Baez, Giles, Peralta

Today at the Sophomore Report we look at the good and the bad of four players’ sophomore seasons in 2015.

Travis d’Arnaud, Catcher, Mets: Talented but brittle is d’Arnaud’s reputation and that’s exactly what he’s been this season for the Mets. He’s missed chunks out of the 2015 season and has appeared in just 25 games. During those stretches, though, he’s been solid behind the dish and well-above average with a bat in his hand — as witnessed by his wRC+ of 121. The good news for the Mets is that another former Top-100 prospect , Kevin Plawecki, has been able to fill the void left by d’Arnaud’s trips to the infirmary (although the rookie has been much better on defence as opposed to offence, according to advanced metrics). d’Arnaud remains a pretty big question mark moving forward for the Mets because of his fragility and everyone knows the catching position is not a job for the faint of heart. His skill set wouldn’t play nearly as well at third base but perhaps he’d be athletic enough to handle third base. It’s not an ideal solution to d’Arnaud’s woes but with Plawecki in tow, it’s at least worth consideration.

Say it Ain’t Sano

According to our prospect guru Kiley McDaniel, Miguel Sano was the game’s 15th best prospect and the Twins second best. After missing the entire 2014 season after undergoing Tommy John surgery, he figured to prove he was healthy at Double-A this season before eventually (hopefully) earning a promotion to Triple-A. Perhaps a September cup of coffee was in the cards, though more likely he was expected to make his anticipated Twins debut in 2016. Instead, the Twins decided to get aggressive and promote the 22 year old to the Majors, completely skipping Triple-A. This is typically a risky move as anecdotally hitters endure a tougher transition jumping straight from Double-A to the Majors than do pitchers. Sano, however, never received that memo.
