• Jose Fernandez will likely go on the DL later today with a strained bicep. Less than 10 previous pitchers (2002 to 2014) officially going on the DL with a strained bicep and their median and average return times was 25 days.
• Denard Span may be getting to the droppable in redraft leagues with his personal return time being the playoffs.
Span was able to run sprints and play catch without problem Saturday. He may go to the team’s complex in Viera, Fla., next week to continue baseball activities.
There are days when Span doesn’t know if he is going to play in the second half of the season. But when he has a day like Saturday, he believes he can make it back for the postseason push. There is no timetable on when Span will return to action.
Even if he does returns this season for a bit, do we know if he will be productive? I doubt it.
• Howie Kendrick will likely go on the DL today with a pulled hamstring.
• Cody Anderson is on the DL with an oblique strain and will likely miss about a month of time. Here are the return times for pitchers with oblique strains.
• Michael Cuddyer also could be activated today.
• Mike Leake got traded and quickly worked his way to the DL with a strained hamstring.
• Dan Uggla is on the DL with back spasms. I am amazed Uggla is still in the league.
• I might as well let both Aaron Barrett owners know he is on the DL.
• The Marlins lost both Jose Urena and Andre Rienzo to injuries.
Velocity Readings
• Chase Anderson’s average fastball velocity is up compared to before going on the DL.
Jason Garcia’s velocity is also up.
• Stephen Strasburg’s fastball speed is in line with the past couple seasons.
• Jered Weaver’s velocity is a nice hot 83 mph. Maybe an independent league will pick him up.

You think Uehara will be a closer next year? Wondering if he’s droppable at this point, esp since I wouldn’t need him for playoffs starting 9/1.

I’m not a Dan Uggla apologist, but I wanted to see if anyone else is more unworthy of being a major leaguer and I was shocked to find that he’s far from the worst MLB player out there this year.
Uggla has 126 PA’s, so I took all hitters with 120+ PA’s and eliminated those with a lower WAR, lower wRC+, lower Offensive WAR, lower defensive WAR and lower BsR WAR. There’s 17 players that are worse than him in all of those categories. 17!!! And they’ve all gotten more PA’s than Uggla!
Tyler Moore (Was), Jake Elmore (TB), Hernan Perez (Det), David Lough (Bal), Sean Rodriguez (Pit), Skip Schumaker (Cin) and Michael Morse form the illustrious group. Also, Mike Aviles and Matt Joyce are worse, but both have over 200 PA’s this year.
Aviles has more than a little bit of an excuse what with the family situation, but good grief Matt Joyce! What is Mike Scoscia doing trotting you out for 278 PA’s??
Wow, I would not have guess so many. I am a little surprise BJ Upton isn’t on the list.

Ten days after he was confirmed with broken ribs, I cannot find a single word on the return of Corey Dickerson (“No timetable has been set” according to Yahoo). I already cut him loose, but will he be back in time to help someone else thrash me in the playoffs? Average return time on nondisplaced rib fractures?

Looks like 42 on average for a fractured rib. The platar faciitis also worries me.
Thanks! Looks like Dickerson is a mid-round steal for next year, can’t imagine him being a .900 OPS monster after not swinging a bat for 30+ days.

After Matz gets back what are the chances that the Mets keep him on a regular rotation (4 games off 1 on) while everyone else takes turns skipping starts? My theory is that, not only will they want a very good pitcher to go as often as he can, they will want to allow him to go at least 170 total innings this year so that he might get close to 200 next year. He’s only got 104 innings this year after doing 140 last year.
Also, do you know where can I find info on Doolittle’s fastball speed from his rehab starts? Do you think he regains closer role by mid-September?
I have no clue what the Mets will do. They have been impossible to guess this year. The situation may work out with another pitcher getting hurt. I would wait until Matz gets closer to returning.

Jeff, what are the odds of Fernandez just being completely shut down? I own Stanton and Kipnis so my DL spots are chewed up so I’m nervous about holding onto Fernandez only to find out at the end of August that he won’t pitch another MLB inning this year.
There is a chance, but I expect him to get some on his rehab. Teams like a pitcher to complete the rehab so they know the extent of the injury and if there are any lingering effects. He could go through the whole rehab, get a start and then be shutdown.
I love that Strasburg exists in a different velocity bracket than most pitchers.
