Damn Rotographs, back at it again with the Outfielder Rankings.

Baseball is back on the TV, the weather is warming up in my city (which is all I care about), and it’s time for a rankings update!

We’re using Yahoo! eligibility requirements which is 5 starts or 10 appearances. These rankings assume the standard 5×5 categories and a re-draft league.  If we forgot someone, please let us know in the comments and we’ll make sure he’s added for the updates. If you have questions for a specific ranker on something he did, let us know in the comments. We can also be reached via Twitter:

There will be differences, sharp differences, within the rankings. The rankers have different philosophies when it comes to ranking, some of which you’re no doubt familiar with through previous iterations. Of course the idea that we’d all think the same would be silly because then what would be the point of including multiple rankers?! Think someone should be higher or lower? Make a case. Let us know why you think that. The chart is sortable. If a ranker didn’t rank someone that the others did, he was given that ranker’s last rank +1.

Thanks for this, Paul! Wondering if y’all would address the Mookie love. You ranked him 4th, ahead of Cutch, Joey Bats, Bryant and Pollock (all of whom are going ahead of him in NFBC). Jeff ranked him ahead of Harper! I recently traded for him in a keeper league and want to believe the hype, but damn, that’s some helium. Maybe more instructive would be to hear from Justin as the low man on the Mookster.

Personally, I feel like what we saw last season from Mookie is s probably what he is, just shy of a 20/20 player. While I think that outside of any reoccurrences of a concussion he should maintain a high floor, I prefer the upside of Pollock, Blackmon, Springer, Stanton, and Marte. Maybe I am missing something on him, but I don’t see the 30/20 or 20/30 potential for this season. Full disclosure though, I was one of the few that did not buy in on him last year so there may be lingering resentment there.

I think it might that lingering resentment! 😉

You might be missing his 86% success rate in the minors or his 33 SB in 99 games and 38 SB in 127 games seasons in 2013-14. If you’re cold on the power growing, I can understand that, but I’m not sure how to come away from his profile and not see a guy who could put up Blackmon’s or Pollock’s 2015 and that was their upside, especially Pollock.

We’re not valuing a roster slow, as in Brantley + 1 month replacement. We’re solely valuing Brantley’s contributions and it’s hard, perhaps impossible, to be top 30 if he only plays 5/6 of the season.

Brantley missed what, 25 games last season and still ended up #16 on the ESPN player rater, and that’s without his 2014 HR gains. I understand a little bit of a knock for his health but 55, or 85 per Zach? Guess I shouldn’t complain if it means can get shares at a deep discount.

I would like to hear the reasoning for Mookie ahead of Harper, and Mookie that high in general. I drafted Mookie last year and it was fabulous and I could be convinced that he warrants the 3 spot, but it seems high for sure.

Less interesting when you realize it’s the projection guys who are down on him. He doesn’t have the numbers to generate a great projection so the systems of Jeff, Pod, and Z will have him down.

It’s not so much that the projections are down on him on my end, but the injury risk. Don’t want to bet on a full season quite yet.

I struggle to fault him for his injury last year. Would have taken a bionic wrist not to break on a high and tight heater. He is from the Bryce Harper mold though, where there isn’t wall he wont run through.

The split on Davis is curious. I’m surprised that three guys have him in their top 10, three more in the top 20, and two in the top 25. What’s the reason for the discrepancies there?

Kinda the opposite of Springer. Davis does have the numbers for a gaudy projection w/3 excellent seasons in the last 4 and thus scores well w/the guys who generate their rankings via the numbers. I’m too low as I look at it now. He should be one spot ahead of Cruz. But I’m not confident w/top 10.

Can Zach Sanders please explain himself here? Does he play in a league without Home Runs and RBI? How can you possibly rank upton, cespedes, JD, and many others in front of Stanton (16!!!) and Bautista (14).

Seriously though, what is the thought process here?

Sanders is constantly the worst with rankings. Always make sure to dismiss anything he says.

Stanton’s low ranking is from injury risk, not talent / per PA. He’s certainly worth gambling on as a top-five guy, but can’t expect a full season at this point.

I value Bautista about the same as most of the guys in front of him. It’s a big tier and that can’t be captured in static 1-x rankings.

Interested to hear why Conforto is universally ranked 14 spots higher then Piscotty. Conforto may platoon against lefties and has a pretty similar batting profile to Piscotty. Although he does hit slightly more fly balls he also pops up way more too. Piscotty shouldn’t platoon and actually had a higher batted ball distance then Conforto last year. They just both seem like the same player to me with Piscotty having a way higher floor.

question for Mike – How is Billy Hamilton at 13 and Revere at 28 in your individual rankings? Revere hits for a much better average, will score more runs and should steal 40+ this year with Lopes in charge of the running game.

It’s simply what the math says. The value of 20+ additional steals. Plus, Revere may lose at bats to lefties.

For these updates do you mind putting a column showing change relative to the last ranking? Just overall, not individuals (although that would be interesting, too). Thanks, and thanks for taking the time to do these updates. I have two aucitons under the belt already, but at least three drafts on the way still, so these updates are very useful.

Is there anyway that you would consider doing rankings with obp instead of average? I think it is becoming much more popular, especially among the demographic that uses Fangraphs.

Look, I undersand why no one really wants to do an overall top 300, or 400 (I sure would like to see that extra 100), but it happens to be a useful tool for many of us, either integrated with our own prep or as a check against it. Please. It helped me a lot last year. I will beg if necessary.
