Returning From the Disabled List: Gutierrez, Barmes, Peavy, Aardsma

Franklin Gutierrez – 22.5% owned – Stomach Virus – Franklin was scratched from a AAA start on Friday for more tests on his stomach. The cause of the ailments has not been found and the effects seem to show up every few days. If/when he returns seems up in the air. The one aspect to remember is that he may get back to the Mariners rather quickly once the cause of the discomfort has been found. I really don’t blame anyone for not picking him up due to the unknown nature of the injury, but once he gets it resolved, I see him getting back to the majors rapidly.

Clint Barmes – 0.4% owned – Hand – Clint looks to return to the Astros within 2 to 3 weeks. I would not rush to pick him up just yet. First, Angel Sanchez is playing decent 2B for the Astros right now. Unless Angel begins to struggle, I don’t see Clint getting much playing time. Second, he is coming back from an hand injury that generally takes away a player’s power to pull a ball. Clint may look like a nice middle infield option in deep or NL only leagues. I may hold off a bit to see how how much playing time and production he gets once he returns.

Jake Peavy – 39.1% owned – Shoulder – Pick Jake up now if he is available. He looks to be joining the team next week. I may hold off on starting the first game back to see what his fastball speed is compared to previous values. I expect it to be a bit slower, but if he is topping out at 88 MPH, he might not be worth keeping. If your pitching staff is getting as decimated as mine is currently, Jake would be a nice addition.

David Aardsma – 22.4% owned – Hip – David looks to return to the Mariners around the end of the month. He looks to re-take back over the closing duties from Brandon League once he returns. Anytime a known closer is available in a league that counts saves, they should be picked up. If for some reason you can’t use more saves, the pitcher can always be traded off to a team that can use the help.
