MASH Report (7/16/15) – Update PAIN and HURT Lists

• No real injury news has been released over the All-Star break so far. I did though add a few status updates to the spreadsheet. Today, I am going to focus on the some updated PAIN and HURT reports.

HURT (Hitter’s Under-performance from Recent Trauma) Rankings (introduction/explanation) :

Any player with a HURT value over 100 (red) has the traits of a batter playing through an injury.

Comparing 2012-2014 to 2015 (min 100 PA)

Comparing 2012-2014 to June-July (min 50 PA)
(Sorry for there is no values except the overall HURT value. The process is fairly processor intensive and it keeps crashing before all the values are outputted. You will need to look up an individual player’s stats if you want to see why the HURT value is so high.

• The comparison from the previous three season to 2015 is a walking wounded list. Edwin Encarnacion is the one player who hasn’t officially gone on the DL and his high in the rankings. He dealt with a back issues in spring training and his missed days because of hamstring and shoulder issues during the season. I think his lack of contact and power is probably related to these injuries.

PAIN (Pitcher Abuse INdex) Rankings (introduction/explanation)

Any player with a PAIN value over 100 (red) has the traits of a pitcher likely to be hurt.

Comparing 2014 to 2015 (min 100 pitches)

Comparing April-May to June-July (min 50 pitches)

James Shields has a PAIN score over 100 on both lists. Both his velocity ability to keep his pitches in the strike zone are declining.

The All-Star break may have been a nice break for him to get a second wind. If I owned him, I try to sell though.

Gio Gonzalez has been struggling the last few months. His velocity is down about 1 mph.

Also, his Zone% has dropped down so only about 1/3 of his pitches are in the strike zone. This lack of command can be seen with a 9% BB% for the season.

Players on the DL in 2015

Just read an encouraging write-up on Matz over at Amazin Avenue from a real doctor:

Do you have any encouraging news on Buchholz? I’m considering dropping him for another starter like McHugh or Erasmo.

Also worth noting that Street was supposed to throw a bullpen session today that determined his fate but they pushed it back till tomorrow. Instead he threw off flat ground. Basically, that bullpen session will determine whether they place him on the DL or not. Not a Street owner but I’m currently holding Smith right now.
