With the season winding down, I wanted to find something that would be useful for those still contending in their leagues. I decided to do something that isn’t particularly new, but we don’t have it here at the site: a starting pitcher chart for the day’s slate of games. I’ll include their performance over the last five starts, their opponent’s wOBA versus the pitcher’s handedness, and then my start/sit recommendation for 10-team, 12-team, and 15-team (or more) leagues.

Let me know what y’all think about this. Obviously these are general recommendations and your league situation will carry more weight whether you are protecting ratios or chasing counting numbers. This is for standard 5×5 roto leagues. The thresholds for H2H starts are generally lower, especially in points leagues so I thought there would be more value focusing on roto. For the weekend, Justin & I will use the Friday podcast to discuss the relevant weekend streamers. By popular demand, these will start coming out the day before the slate in question.

I’ve been trying to get to the root cause of how much can a pitcher limit hard contact. I’ve had some hits and misses, but today I’ll finish going over the possible inputs.

I’ve already investigated the groundball/flyball issue and generate weak contact when hitters make contact with pitches out of the strike zone in this series and previously looked into two-strike counts and found nothing. Here are the five possible causes.

• After contact, the ball coming off the top (popup) or bottom (groundball) of the bat.
• The batter chases a pitch out of the strike zone and makes a less than full-effort swing.
• The batter is taken off guard by the pitch’s speed (fast or slow) and can’t make a full-effort swing.
• The batter is deceived by the pitch’s horizontal movement and makes contact off the end or handle of the bat (h/t to Kenny Butrym).
• With two strikes, the batter shortens up his swing just hoping to put the ball into play.

So it’s time to finish the list to see if changing speeds and horizontal movement help limit hard contact.

The dropped players make up a shortlist this week as the season winds down. Lots of the moves are from the fantasy managers playing the weekly short game and not caring about the long-term production. They are the right moves with just three weeks left in the season.

For this weekly feature, I use the NFBC Main Event because of the number of identical leagues. Additionally, the managers stay engaged longer on the whole since each spent $1700 per team. I tried to find that sweet spot between the obvious and bizarre drops and will focus on players dropped in six to nine leagues. Do the top starting pitchers on contending teams pitch more innings as the season goes on and their team fights for a playoff spot? Do the top starting pitchers on teams that are likely to clinch a playoff spot pitch less innings as the season goes on, to save their arms for the playoffs? Unfortunately, these questions arose in my mind after I traded a big bat for a front-line starter on a team that is sure to make the playoffs right at my league’s trade deadline. Was that a mistake? Should we value hitters more than top starters on teams likely to clinch early? Is that too many questions for an opening paragraph?
