Bullpen Report: September 1, 2021

NEW FEATURE ALERT! We have added an upgraded version of RosterResource’s Closer Depth Chart to FanGraphs. Read more about it here.

We will always include a link to the full Closer Depth Chart at the bottom of the Bullpen Report each day. It’s also accessible from the RosterResource drop-down menu and from any RosterResource page. Please let us know what you think.

  1. Notable Workloads: Primary closers or valuable members of a closer committee who have been deemed unavailable or likely unavailable for the current day due to recent workload.
  2. Injury News
  3. Outlier Saves: Explanation for a non-closer earning a save during the previous day.
  4. Committee Clarity: Notes on a closer committee that clarify a pitcher’s standing in the group.
  5. Losing A Grip: Struggling closers who could be on the hot seat.

The “RosterResource” link will take you to the corresponding team’s RosterResource depth chart, which will give you a better picture of the full bullpen and results of the previous six days (pitch count, save, hold, win, loss, blown save).

Notable Workloads

•Raisel Iglesias, LAA: Three of last four days; 14 pitches on Tuesday. | RosterResource

Mike Mayers and Steve Cishek are the top options to substitute if Iglesias isn’t available Wednesday.

•Codi Heuer, CHC: 27 pitches on Tuesday; Manuel Rodríguez, CHC: 22 pitches on Tuesday. | RosterResource

Rowan Wick and Adam Morgan should both be available on Wednesday, though Wick has only worked back-to-back days once this season. Rex Brothers is also an option.

•Kenley Jansen, LAD: Three of last four days; 14 pitches on Tuesday. | RosterResource

Blake Treinen has also worked three of the last four days. If he isn’t available either, Alex Vesia, Phil Bickford, Joe Kelly and Corey Knebel could all be plausible closers.

•Mark Melancon, SDP: 21 pitches on Tuesday; 14 pitches on Monday. | RosterResource

Emilio Pagán, Daniel Hudson, Pierce Johnson, Tim Hill and Austin Adams are all possibilities if the veteran Melancon is down on Wednesday.

Outlier Saves

•Spencer Patton, TEX | RosterResource

Joe Barlow was just activated off the IL (blister) on Monday, and even though he only threw seven pitches the day he was activated, it looks like the Rangers are easing him back in to action. That left Patton as the top option to close out the Rockies, and he made quick work of them, with a 1-2-3 inning on ten pitches. It was Patton’s second save of the season, and he should remain Barlow’s top lieutenant whenever he needs a day.
