Bullpen Report: June 25, 2022

The 2022 version of Bullpen Report includes five different sections, as well as the closer chart, which can be found at the bottom of the page.

We will always include a link to the full Closer Depth Chart at the bottom of the Bullpen Report each day. It’s also accessible from the RosterResource drop-down menu and from any RosterResource page. Please let us know what you think.

  1. Notable Workloads: Primary closers or valuable members of a closer committee who have been deemed unavailable or likely unavailable for the current day due to recent workload.
  2. Injury News
  3. Outlier Saves: Explanation for a non-closer earning a save during the previous day.
  4. Committee Clarity: Notes on a closer committee that clarify a pitcher’s standing in the group.
  5. Losing A Grip: Struggling closers who could be on the hot seat.

The “RosterResource” link will take you to the corresponding team’s RosterResource depth chart, which will give you a better picture of the full bullpen and results of the previous six days (pitch count, save, hold, win, loss, blown save).

Notable Workloads

Colin Poche, TBR: Three of the last four days; 12 pitches on Friday. | RosterResource

Jason Adam has pitched in four of the last five days, so he almost definitely won’t be available on Saturday. That would leave Brooks Raley 레일리 (who’s also pitched three of four days), Matt Wisler and Ryan Thompson as the likeliest closers.

David Robertson, CHC: Three straight days; 12 pitches on Friday. | RosterResource

Rowan Wick or Mychal Givens would fill in on Saturday if needed.

Taylor Rogers, SDP: 29 pitches on Friday. | RosterResource

Luis García and Nabil Crismatt are the likeliest Padres closers on Saturday if a save chance arises.

Injury News

Daniel Hudson, LAD: Suffered a season-ending ACL injury on Friday. | RosterResource

Hudson suffered some sort of ACL injury (the Dodgers are waiting on imaging to know the severity) attempting to field a ball in the eighth inning of Friday’s game, with manager Dave Roberts saying after the game that he “doesn’t see how” the injury could allow Hudson to return this season. It’s a disappointing end to a great 2022 for Hudson, who’s earned five saves as Craig Kimbrel’s top setup man, with a 2.22 ERA.

The loss of Hudson with Blake Treinen already on the IL and out through the All-Star break with a shoulder injury further increases the leverage with which Evan Phillips, Alex Vesia, Yency Almonte and Brusdar Graterol will be needed in setup roles.

Outlier Saves

Rafael Montero, HOU | RosterResource

Usual closer Ryan Pressly imploded on Thursday night, facing five batters and recording just one out, taking the loss as an inherited runner scored on an Aaron Judge walk-off single against Ryne Stanek. In throwing 26 pitches in that game after 14 pitches Wednesday, he definitely wasn’t going to be available Friday.

That left the ninth to Rafael Montero, and though it wasn’t particularly clean—he walked a couple batters—he was able to finish the ninth out in scoreless fashion to earn his fifth save of the year. He’s been a key member of the Astros relief corps, with a 1.82 ERA in 29.2 innings. Montero has 30 strikeouts along the way.

Is that Houck and Hand committee clarity note going to appear in every bullpen report going forward? It was in the June 18 and 20 report.

Thanks, Jon. I only noticed because I need to read this as soon as it comes out. Thanks for the great stuff!
