Pros & Cons: German Marquez

You’re all familiar with pros and cons lists. Today’s subject is pitcher German Marquez from the Colorado Rockies. The 22-year old righty has had an impressive rookie campaign spurred by a two-month hot stretch that is ongoing. He was a top 100 prospect across the industry this year, charting 52nd on Eric Longenhagen’s list, but didn’t get much buzz because of his home ballpark. His quality pitching and the success of Colorado have forced us to take notice.

Trade Deadline Breakdown

The deadline delivered some big time moves on Monday, but the fantasy impact hasn’t necessarily matched the names. In fact, the aftermath on the teams the big players are leaving is where the real fantasy impact will be felt in most of these deals. Jeff covered a host of deals earlier today as well, so check that piece out, too.

JUST AFTER I WROTE THAT PARAGRAPH DARVISH WAS DEALT! A professional would just re-write it, but I’m too geeked and eager to see what the Rangers got in return, so we’ll just proceed!

Here are my thoughts on the big moves of the day and the repercussions for all teams involved:

Jonathan Lucroy to COL for a PTBNL

ROCKIES: This is the best thing that could’ve happened to Lucroy in the midst of his nightmare season (66 wRC+) with Texas. He hasn’t been able to get anything going at all this year, but maybe Coors Field can jumpstart him for a strong finish. His strikeout rate is a career-best 10.5%, but does it matter if it’s not strong contact? His 22% Hard contact rate is 12 points of his mark from the last three years and 10 points below his career mark.

A performance this poor makes me wonder if there is a nagging injury (or injuries) that he has tried to play through. Or maybe it’s a poor season that snowballed on itself, especially once he started losing more and more playing to Robinson Chirinos. The move does reinstate Lucroy as a must-own catcher in all formats just because the park could reignite this once-excellent bat.

Roto Riteup: July 28, 2017

Masahiro Tanaka seemed close for a while now with a 3.81 ERA, 1.12 WHIP, 60 Ks, and just nine walks in his last eight starts and then then this:

Tanaka was perfect through five and two-thirds before an Adeiny Hechavarria single broke it up. He wound up going eight innings, allowing just a single run on two hits with a career-high 14 strikeouts.

On the Agenda:

  • Salazar Dazzles Again
  • Conforto’s Big July
  • Parker Bridwell Can’t Lose
  • Beltre on the Cusp

The Sleeper and the Bust Episode: 482 – Rookies & Dynasty Buy-Lows

7/28/17

Eno’s internet connection was a little wonky and led to a crackling sound with his recording. We’re addressing the internet issues for the future.

What’s Up with Lance McCullers?

Lance McCullers was highly sought after this draft season. He was the 40th SP on average in NFBC drafts, but went as high as the early-20s among pitchers, making him a top 100 pick in those cases. A couple rough starts in April left him with a 4.34 ERA, but then he reeled off a 1.51 ERA for eight starts before a sore back put him on the DL. It was his third DL stint since the start of 2016 and a continuation of injury issues that have haunted him throughout his pro career (high of 104.7 IP in the minors). It’s been rough since his return. He has a 7.13 ERA in five starts and hasn’t gone six innings in any of them.

So what’s going on?

Roto Riteup: July 23, 2017

J.T. Realmuto has been an unheralded star at the thinnest fantasy position this year:

The 26-year old catcher has a .305 AVG, 10 HR, and 5 SB in 332 PA so far. He needed 545 PA to notch 11 HR last year. He’s also legitimately fast, not just catcher-fast.

On the Agenda:

  • Salazar Strong Off the DL
  • Grichuk Loves Coming Back
  • Gurriel Quietly Beasting
  • Other News
  • Whiff Watch
