Paul Sporer Baseball Chat – November 10th, 2017

Thanks for comin’ by!

2:36

Paul Sporer: Can’t believe the season is officially done, but the Hot Stove is already heating up. Let’s talk about it!!

2:38

Sox: Would a Rusney CastilloMatt Kemp trade make sense for the teams?

2:41

Paul Sporer: I think the Sox want to do something else at DH so while in theory it might line up, I don’t think it’s plays in practice

2:41

Paul Sporer: Curious if we ever see Rusney get a real shot, though

2:41

Wes: Former Austinite here. Better Taco, Torchy’s or TacoDeli? For baseball purposes: Do you think Otani ditches the bat for pitching full time in a few years or could he be the first legit two way player we have seen in a long time?

2:42

Paul Sporer: I’m ride or die with Torchy’s. I just love it. The tacos I had at Galaxy Taco in San Diego were amazing and better than Torchy’s, but for local, I’m Torchy’s all day. All I’ve read re: Ohtani is that he wants to be somewhere he can hit. Obv can’t play the field every day he’s not pitching, but maybe 1-2x plus his ABs as SP

Four FA Relievers Who Could Close

The offseason begins with a decent bit of uncertainty in the closer’s role for many teams. The free agent and trade markets could shuffle a lot of 9th inning plans across the league for contenders and pretenders alike. Looking at the free agent market, I’ve identified four middle relievers who I think have a real shot at landing a closer gig this winter.

Don’t Pay for Starling Marte

Starling Marte had an incredibly disappointing 2017 season, fueled by his PED suspension that limited him to just 77 games. While on the field, he had his lowest batting average (.275) since his 47-game debut in 2012 (.257), a solid .333 OBP that wasn’t too far off his .344 career mark, and a career-worst .379 SLG (has a .439 career and was at .456 last year). He did go 21-for-25 on the bases which would’ve netted around 35 had he played his average 568 PA from the last four seasons. He was the 23rd overall pick in NFBC leagues last year, but the rough season hasn’t even cost him a round as he went 35th on average in Justin’s draft and then 45th in my NFBC draft-and-hold from Friday night in Arizona.

Brewers Show Faith in Chase Anderson… And You Should, Too

Chase Anderson had shown glimpses of upside over his first three seasons as a major leaguer, during which he netted a 4.26 ERA, 1.35 WHIP, and 12% K-BB in 418.7 IP. He even caught the eye of our very own Eno Sarris, who heralded him as a solid deep league option for those first two seasons.  Unfortunately, he (Anderson, not Sarris… though Sarris has given up some bombs) had a home run issue as well (1.3 HR/9) only exacerbated by playing first in Arizona then Milwaukee.

Paul Sporer Baseball Chat – October 26th, 2017

Filled in for Eno, thanks for coming out!

11:53

Paul Sporer: Hola, everyone! Eno’s at his gall bladder appointment. I had to have mine removed a couple years ago and he seems to be going through the same thing, so we’ll see what’s what after this appt.

11:54

D.B. Sweeney as Shoeless Joe: What on earth are the Yankees thinking? Georgia Roddy is the best man for the job.

11:54

Paul Sporer: This is REALLY shocking that he’s out. There were grumblings on Twitter last night, but I wasn’t sure if it was sourced or not

11:54

Tim: JOOOEEEEEEE!!!!!!

11:54

Paul Sporer: Very surprising

11:55

Michael: Josh Fields was definitely the right choice, right?

Here is a look at some of the performance data for each team based on tonight’s matchup: Dallas Keuchel v. Clayton Kershaw. Links to the data where available.

The Dodgers v. Dallas Keuchel

  • After a disastrous year vs. lefties in 2016 where they finished dead last in wOBA (.275) with a 22.4% K rate (13th-highest), they’ve soared to 5th in wOBA (.337) while standing pat in K rate at 22.3% (10th-highest).

Paul Sporer Baseball Chat- October 20th, 2017

Thanks for coming out to chat ahead of Game 6 of the ALCS! Go JV!

5:30

Paul Sporer: Almost time for Game 6 of the ALCS! Let’s talk some baseball!!!

5:31

CT: Hey Paul, thanks for doing this, hope all is well. In my 6×6 12 team roto w/ $260 budget and 3 keepers, my best options (because I don’t wanna keep SPs) are C. Seager $35, C. Bellinger $10, T. Mancini $10, and R. Devers $10. Thoughts?

5:32

Paul Sporer: Bellinger and Dever for sure. I like what Mancini did, but I still think I’d rather pay the freight on Seager

5:33

Mike: 18 team H2H point Auction league only 2 keepers –  who do you keep.

5:33

Paul Sporer: Ideally Trout and Harper 😉

5:35

Mike: Who do you keep?   Betts for $13 with 1 year left or J.Ramirez with 2 yrs left.   Other keeper is Bellinger for $4 for 3yr

11:02

Paul Sporer: Health, currently

11:02

RonWeasley: Edwin or Jake Lamb next season?

11:03

Paul Sporer: Gimme Rake Lamb, maybe ’18 is the year he dominates for a whole season instead of a 2H swoon again

11:03

Jaime: Any Padres worth drafting next year?
