The All-Star Break Batter Shopping List — Home Runs

The All-Star break provides a much needed rest and a perfect opportunity to assess your team(s). The last time I used xHR/FB rate to identify hitters due for a home run spike was in the middle of May, so now is an excellent time to name names once again. These are the fantasy relevant hitters whose xHR/FB rates most exceed their actual HR/FB rates, which represents a strong list of acquisition targets if you’re looking to bolster your standing in the home run department and are hoping to buy at a discount.

I don’t understand why Major League Baseball doesn’t do more to promote the Future’s Game. If you missed it, this was my favorite part:

Bullpen Report: July 9, 2017

Another compelling day of bullpen activity around the major leagues as the unofficial first half of the season comes to a close…

One day after allowing two walks and a walk-off homer, All-Star closer Corey Knebel entered in the eighth inning with a two-run lead, two outs, and a runner on second. He walked Ji-Man Choi, but retired the next batter on a ground ball to short. In the ninth, Knebel walked Brett Gardner to open the inning, but then struck out Aaron Judge, Didi Gregorius, and Gary Sanchez to notch his 14th save and secure the first-place Brewers’ 50th victory. The strikeout of Judge marked Knebel’s 44th consecutive appearance with at least one strikeout, which is now just five shy of the major league record for a relief pitcher set by Aroldis Chapman in 2014. Knebel’s 43 consecutive appearances with at least one strikeout to open the season is already the single-season record and the most ever to begin a year.

After a two-hit debut that included his first MLB homer, Clint Frazier was just 1-for-12 until Saturday:

The walkoff three-run shot was his third hit of the day (single, triple) and gave him 4 RBIs.

Bullpen Report: July 7, 2017

The Braves’ solid late-innings trio has taken a couple of hits lately. Jim Johnson blew his seventh save of the season Friday night, and it was his fifth blown save since May 23. Over that stretch, Johnson has a 5.59 ERA with a 4.7 BB/9 ratio, after posting a 2.84 ERA and 1.4 BB/9 ratio prior to this stretch. His BABIP has also risen from .245 to .323, though some of that increase could be a function of pitching in less favorable counts.

In a post-game interview, Brian Snitker said he has “no problem” with Johnson, so we can expect him to get the Braves’ next save opportunity. In general, when blown saves pile up, an ouster is almost inevitable. Remember when it seemed that Francisco Rodriguez and Matt Bush were on seemingly infinite leashes? Their respective managers stood by them far longer than many fans and fantasy owners would have preferred, but in both cases, patience and support had their limits. I suspect if Johnson’s next blown save occurs within a week after the All-Star break, Snitker’s patience will reach its end as well.

Paul Sporer Baseball Chat – July 7th, 2017

Chat transcript is below!

2:05

Paul Sporer: What is up everyone!! Gotta do a tight hour today, so let’s get going.

2:05

Wally the Green Monster: K. Broxton and E. Suarez for T. Frazier.  Who wins that trade?  (the team with Frazier needs SBs and has other 3B)

2:05

Paul Sporer: Think I prefer side A, but I think Frazier will be solid rest of season

2:07

Tom: Bruce Rondon has 5 shutout innings since his recall, and all in the 8th inning – 1 win, 3 holds.  Is he looking as good as these results, and is he now the guy to stash anticipating a Justin Wilson trade?

2:08

Paul Sporer: I think he is the stash if you’re worried about a Wilson trade, but I’ve fallen for him many a time

2:08

Bernie Brewer: I have Schwarber.  I’m not sure what to expect with his return.  I was offered Duda and Mancini for him.  Should I accept that?

Alex Chamberlain’s 10 Bold Predictions (Mid-Season Review)

Bold predictions are inherently jovial, whimsical, outlandish, possibly even blasphemous. You know you probably weren’t bold enough if you got too many correct, and you probably were too bold if you got too many incorrect. Mine typically follow suit. I don’t expect to get every prediction correct by the numbers, but I do hope each prediction is correct in spirit. My “spiritual” success in this regard, I’ve noticed, typically reflects upon how well my teams performed in a given season. Accordingly, I take my predictions seriously, and I sincerely use them as a collective barometer for how I had gauged value plays in the preseason.

I don’t remember any of my predictions, really, and I’m revisiting them in real time with you. My teams are doing well this year — 1st, 2nd, and 3rd in my three home leagues (humblebrag) (no expert or high-stakes leagues this year) — but I have a feeling my predictions have not stood the test of time. Again, this is to be expected. But, again-again, I’m not sure they’ve held up spiritually, either.

Here goes:

Constructing an Ottoneu All-Star Team

With the All-Star break upon us, I wanted to take some time to notice several players who are putting up seasons worth your attention across Ottoneu. I guess we should probably consider what we mean by “worth attention.” Certainly many players are having great seasons. Chris Sale is pitching at career bests, Aaron Judge and Cody Bellinger have combined for 53 HRs, Justin Turner is walking more than he strikes out, and Jose Ramirez has picked up 2B eligibility when producing a career high ISO. None of these players will be included… Wait, what? I thought you said this was an All-Star team?

A couple key points that drive the Ottoneu format. First, it is an economic game with a defined budget. Second, players get kept year to year. For this reason, and because others can/have spilled virtual ink over the players listed above, I will exclude them. A couple additional stipulations in filling out this roster Read the rest of this entry »

No one has a chance against Mike Foltynewicz when he’s got 97 with armside run:

He was fantastic against the Nats (6 IP/2 ER/5 K), running his streak to four straight gems (2.16 ERA, 26 Ks in 25 IP). Going back to the start of June adds in a 3.3 IP/8 ER dud against the same Nats team, but still only pushes his ERA to 2.98 with a 1.25 WHIP, 23% K, and 9% BB in 42.3 IP.

On the Agenda:

  • Final Vote Winners
  • Faria’s For Real
  • Anibal the Animal
  • Lamet’s Lament
  • Ray & Hill Duel
  • Other News
