The Curious Case of the Elite Fantasy Shortstop

This was not the plan. With Troy Tulowitzki, Hanley Ramirez and Jose Reyes among the top group, shortstop was always at the mercy of injuries. Poor performance while on the field was not supposed to be the issue. While they’ve thwarted countless fantasy seasons, the star shortstops have tossed the keys to the position to… Brandon Crawford. No kidding. Crawford leads the position in wRC+ with Jhonny Peralta right on his heels.

What went wrong? Let’s take a gander at the top 5 by RotoGraphs preseason consensus rankings.

Mike Foltynewicz is Pretty Good

I’m a sucker for velocity. If a pitcher throws hard enough, I’m willing to forgive more warts on their profile. With that in mind, I’ve fully accepted Mike Foltynewicz as a viable back of the rotation, mixed league arm with upside. Deductive reading skills probably led you to the conclusion he throws hard, and your reading skills haven’t failed you. Among starters who have pitched a minimum of 40 innings, his 94.8 mph average four-seam fastball velocity ranks tied with Stephen Strasburg for the eighth highest. His two-seam fastball checks in with an average velocity of 94.4 mph, tied for the 12th highest mark. He throws his two heaters a whopping 74.1% of the time. Read the rest of this entry »

RotoGraphs Audio: Field of Streams 6/05/2015

Episode 45 – A Little Rajai

The latest episode of “Field of Streams” is live!

In this episode, Dylan Higgins and Matthew Dewoskin discuss returning from the submarine, keeping an eye on some catchers who are day-to-day, Matt refusing to put any faith in Tyler Flowers, Matt’s new favorite sneaky pick at first base, not worrying too much about low batting averages in DFS, being skeptical about Ruben Tejada’s success, betting against Dylan’s contest picks as a strategy, a foretelling matchup between Ubaldo Jimenez and Danny Salazar, a nebulous matchup between Odrisamer Despaigne and Michael Lorenzen, the Mariners DFA’ing Justin Ruggiano, and Matt’s dog ready to be activated.

The Prospect Stock Watch: Ross, Stephenson, Urena

The baseball season is in full swing and prospects around baseball are already seeing their stock values start to shift up or down. Today we’re looking at a pitcher who could help out in the playoff race in the second half of 2015 and a few other players that are quite talented but also a few years away from reaching The Show.

Ozhaino Albies, SS, Braves: Albies didn’t enter pro ball until 2014 but the 18-year-old infielder is already making a name for himself. After hitting . 364 in his debut, the young prospect is more than holding his own in full-season ball. He has a .313 batting average and has walked almost as much as he’s struck out (21/28) and has stolen 20 bases in 52 games. Braves’ incumbent shortstop Andrelton Simmons will be a tough man to move off of shortstop but second base could eventually become home to Albies, and the Braves organization is not shy about aggressively promoting talented prospects (as seen with the likes of Rafael Furcal and Andruw Jones). Roto Riteup: June 5, 2015

The 2015 World Cup kicks off tomorrow! My South Korean squad has a tough task ahead of them, but I think they can make it out of group play. The USWNT is in the group of death, though they are arguably the best team in the World Cup.

On today’s agenda:
1. Consider Ben Revere
2. I flip-flip on Delino Deshields Jr., again
3. Love/Hate with Jesse Hahn
4. Streaming Pitching Options

Bullpen Report: June 4, 2015

The Dodgers’ failed to make closer Kenley Jansen available for their season finale in Colorado against the Rockies last evening, raising a fair share of eyebrows — and concern — for the right-hander. Throughout the evening and into today, the team shed a bit more light into Jansen’s situation. Due to a history of atrial fibrillation (irregular heartbeat), team trainers and a consulting doctor administered a series of tests to rule out the heart issue when Jansen complained of a stomach/headache in the first frame. After receiving intravenous fluids, it was determined that Jansen’s high blood pressure could have been at the root of the other symptoms. At any rate, Jansen was better today and cleared for action by team doctors. He’s 5-of-6 in save chances on the season with a 0.00 ERA (-0.55 FIP) and a 55% K-BB% in six appearances. Wishing the best of health for Kenley.

MASH Report (6/4/15)

Josh Hamilton is back on the DL, this time with a strained hamstring. I figured he would make it a couple weeks before needing to go back on the DL.

• Additionally, Ryan Braun is ailing again, but it is not serious. He will not go on the DL, but it looks like he will need to see the doctor every few months to get his thumb nerve refrozen.

Brewers right fielder Ryan Braun left the team Wednesday to travel to California to undergo a second cryotherapy procedure on his troublesome right thumb.

Milwaukee manager Craig Counsell downplayed the significance of this latest development, saying the procedure was pre-planned and referring to it as “maintenance.” But it was the first public indication of any kind that Braun’s first such procedure in October, during which a specialist injected a needle into the base of Braun’s thumb to freeze an inflamed nerve there, had “worn off” and needed to be repeated.

Dr. Vernon Williams, the same specialist who performed Braun’s first cryotherapy, did this one as well at his clinic in Anaheim. While there is no track record for a baseball player with this issue (technically, a thumb neuroma), Williams has told the Brewers that the procedure can be repeated safely as long as is it not done more frequently than every three to four months, perhaps throughout the remainder of Braun’s playing career if symptoms persist.

RotoGraphs Consensus Rankings – May/June Update: Starting Pitchers

We’re making our way around the diamond with our updated rankings and today we are diving into the starting rotation, a robust fantasy position with plenty of elite-level talent, but maybe a soft middle. Here are the positions we’ve done so far and you can also access them via the Positional Rankings in the right sidebar:

We probably didn’t miss anyone here. If you think someone is missing, you can definitely mention him in the comments, but chances are he just didn’t make the cut.

I ranked 150, Zach ranked 122, Mike ranked 100, and Eno – yes Eno is here for the SP Ranks!!! – ranked 134. If they didn’t rank someone that one of the others did, he was given a +1 of their last rank as I’m sure you noticed in the other positions, but there’s a lot of different opinions with pitchers so it’s more prevalent here.
