Buy or Sell on Hard Hit%

A few days back, David Appelman announced the addition of Hard Hit, Medium Hit and Soft Hit data to the batted ball stats on FanGraphs. Since then, I have been playing around with them, and found some interesting things.

But I had no idea what to make of those things. If a guy has an extremely high Hard Hit%, what does that mean? Should we expect regression? Should we expect it to continue? And what does that mean for fantasy value?

HR/FB Rate Surgers Through the Lens of Batted Ball Distance

We’re not a month into the season, so it’s finally time to start putting the hitter batted ball distance leaderboard to work. Back in late January, I unveiled my xHR/FB rate equation, which included three components, batted ball distance being one of them. Unfortunately, I don’t have the data for angle and standard deviation, so I cannot calculate xHR/FB rate marks yet and share the biggest discrepancies. However, simply looking at batted ball distance could do a reasonably decent job at identifying those who might be in for a HR/FB rate surge or decline. We’ll start with the potential surgers. These are the hitters whose distance is top notch, but for whatever reason, have posted mediocre or poor HR/FB rates.

Bullpen Report: Sunday, May 10

The Rangers bullpen kept their order intact today, as they closed out the Rays 2-1. Not a lot has been written about the Texas pen, probably because it’s the Texas pen, but their moms deserve to hear some love sprinkled on their sons. First, Keone Kela struck out two in the seventh, and he got the W when the Rangers scored a run in the top of the eighth. Don’t be fooled by his 1.93 ERA. That’s helped by an 84.3% LOB rate. His 4.18 xFIP is kind of gross, and his 10.3% K%-BB% is definitely gross. He is the Rangers seventh inning guy, and if something happens to these next two guys, he’s probably next in line. Shawn Tolleson got his fifth hold of the year. One reason that number is so low, is because he’s on the Rangers, and they haven’t provided him with a ton of opportunities. He’s the opposite of Kela. Don’t be fooled by his 4.85 ERA. It’s inflated by a 58.8% LOB rate. His xFIP of 2.10 shows signs of promise, and his 31.3% K%-BB% is downright lovely. Neftali Feliz worked around a couple of hits and got his sixth save of the year.
