Recommendations for Roto 5×5 Leagues
Intro
The chart includes their performance for 2026, their opponent’s wOBA versus the pitcher’s handedness, and recently added opponent’s K% (also v. SP handedness), my general start/sit recommendation for 10-team, 12-team, and 15-team (or more) leagues – essentially a shallow, medium, deep league setup – and then a note about some, most, or all depending on the day. If a pitcher only has an “x” in 15-team, it doesn’t mean there’s no potential use in 10s and 12s, but it’s a much riskier stream for those spots.
These are general recommendations for standard 5×5 roto leagues, and your league situation will carry more weight whether you are protecting ratios or chasing counting numbers. I usually won’t have much to write about aces who are locked into our rotations. If you want to discuss someone further, please feel free to leave a comment. I usually do a few sweeps of the comments before game time in case there are time-sensitive questions.
Color Coding:
- Green – Good Matchup (lower OPS output by SP opponent) – 21st to 30th
- Yellow – OK – 11th to 20th
- Red – Bad – 1st to 10th

There were actually a surprising number of guys yesterday that threw more than 80 pitches even though their team had nothing or almost nothing to play for:

That’s more than I would have thought
Gausman and Nola don’t really belong here. Both teams are playing for home field in the WC series, which is quite valuable.
Fair point, though there are limits to that. Teams don’t burn their best starters for home field advantage. Nola isn’t going in Game 1 (or 2 for that matter) of the WC and Gausman will now be on 5 days rest going into Game 1.
The Phils are supposed to have both Sanchez and Wheeler going this weekend. Now, they still need to clinch a postseason spot and they do NOT have the tiebreaker over the DBacks so I assume Sanchez and Wheeler are all-in until they do clinch. That said, any 2 Phils Ws or Dbacks Ls clinches for the Phils. If they do, I’m assuming Sanchez and Wheeler get very short tune-ups rather than full 80-100 pitch starts.
The Cubs do have the tiebreaker against the DBacks so their magic number is only 1. Now, Gausman goes into Game 1 on a full 5 days rest so there was no reason to pull him. You could say the same about Sale.
But you’re right, neither probably belonged on the list, though the list was more an informal thing. But it’s also not like the Guardians leaving Messick in when they have a bye to play for either.
I was just surprised at some of them and made a list of it. The Yankees leaving Cole in for 105 pitches is kind of surprising, but OTOH Cole only got in 2/3 of a full season so maybe it isn’t that surprising.
One correction, Cesar Perdomo pitched yesterday for SFG. Off day today for SFG and MIN.
