Starting Pitcher Chart – July 27th

Gary A. Vasquez-USA TODAY Sports

Daily SP Chart archive

The chart includes their season performance, their opponent’s wOBA versus the pitcher’s handedness over the last 30 days, my general start/sit recommendation for 10-team, 12-team, and 15-team (or more) leagues, and then a note about them. Obviously, there are league sizes beyond those three so it’s essentially a shallow, medium, deep. If a pitcher only has an “x” in 15-team, it doesn’t mean there’s no potential use in 10s and 12s, but it’s basically a risky stream for those spots.

These are general recommendations, and your league situation will carry more weight whether you are protecting ratios or chasing counting numbers. This is for standard 5×5 roto leagues. The thresholds for H2H starts are generally lower, especially in points leagues so I thought there would be more value focusing on roto.

  • Update: Minutes after posting I saw that Lucas Giolito was traded to the Angels. This could spell trouble for my guy Silseth! Obviously he should still start tomorrow, but I’m a lottt less bullish on his fantasy prospects in the immediate future than I was just 10 minutes ago. If we’re being honest, it should be Tyler Anderson getting removed given his struggles this year. Well… maybe not. He has a 3.99 ERA, 1.44 WHIP, and 18% K-BB in his last 6 outings and of course he brings gifts and a various assortment of veteran presents. Enjoy the Detroit start with Silseth, but stay tuned to the news on whether or not he remains in the rotation afterwards.

Thursday, July 27th Starter Notes
RK PITCHER TM OPP 10 12 15+ IP ERA WHIP K-BB wOBA RK NOTE
1 Justin Steele CHC at STL x x x 103.2 2.95 1.11 18% 7th Traded in 2 pts of K rate to halve his BB rate down to 5% and the results have been absolutely fantastic
2 Dylan Cease CHW CLE x x x 113.2 4.04 1.31 19% 10th Has lowkey gotten himself on track w/a 3.00 ERA, 1.20 WHIP, 25% K-BB in 51 IP
3 Kodai Senga NYM WSN x x x 99 3.27 1.26 18% 18th Walked 3+ in 8 of his first 9 (3.94 ERA, 1.52 WHIP, 14% K-BB), just 3x in his last 9 (2.65, 1.02, 22%)
4 Tanner Bibee CLE at CHW x x x 83 3.04 1.19 16% 27th Looks dialed in again and isn’t coming out of the lineup; threw 133 IP in MiLB last yr so plenty in the tank
5 Chase Silseth LAA at DET x x x 24.1 4.44 1.48 9% 25th Big fan of his; ranks near my guy C.Sanchez (mid-70s) & if he keeps the BB in check, he’s at least a team streamer everywhere
6 Miles Mikolas STL CHC x x 126.2 4.33 1.31 11% 7th Has 2 yrs at $18.5 mil per so I doubt he’s going anywhere at the deadline; hit up last time but has been fine this yr
7 Patrick Sandoval LAA at DET x x 93 4.16 1.41 9% 22nd 4 good starts by ERA in his L5 but just 21 K and 12 BB in those outings (8 K/2 BB in the 7 ER dud)
8 Josiah Gray WSN at NYM x x 112.1 3.45 1.44 10% 9th We’re nearing a decision pt w/guys like him where the risk might not be worth the upside, espec. those w/low Win probability
9 Michael Lorenzen DET LAA x 100.2 3.49 1.09 13% 12th Has had trouble w/.500+ tms (5.87 ERA/1.49 WHIP) as opposed to dominance v. sub-.500 (2.02/0.85)
10 Matt Manning DET LAA x 36.2 3.19 1.01 9% 12th Putting up results w/a 2.52 ERA & 0.88 WHIP since his IL return (25 IP) but just a meager 9% K-BB

Angels website says Ohtani and Sandoval vs. Tigers on Thursday, Silseth on Friday.

MLB.com has this as well.

I’m going to go out on a limb and guess that Ohtani gets an XXX against the Tigers.

Paul, Lugo has been dealing including again yesterday, but his next 4 starts line up as @COL, vsLAD, @ARI, vsARI. Ratios are super tight in my league and I definitely don’t want to run him out there the next 2 starts, but roster spots are at a premium and holding him for two weeks to maybe start him @ARI seems tough, but there are other teams who definitely should pick him up were I to drop him (I really need a rotational bat to pair with Carpenter and Benson). What do you think?

Finally figured out why Bibee’s chase rate is so low despite a positive whiff rate and K%, and it’s kind of obvious: most of the offspeed and breaking stuff he throws, he does so in the strike zone and forces swings and misses that way. Can’t chase if there’s nothing to chase! He’s generating swings and misses using just the speed and spin differential and/or mirroring on his pitches. Interesting strategy.

Well, normally, I would not hesitate to start Ohtani as SP, but w/ the doubleheader and his recent struggles that he/they seem to not have figured out yet — gosh, he even surrendered 4(!) HRs to the Bucs — and I could probably use 2 offensive games of (still somewhat) hot Ohtani bat more than 1 pitching game of iffy Ohtani at this point, this will be the 1st time all season I’m using him for offense instead of pitching…

Ohtani owner in my league used him on offense. Of course threw a complete game 1-hitter and went 0-for-5 at the plate. Hope you talked yourself out of it.

Hahaha! Yeah, I was regretting it by the 6th inning or so, especially since he was going 0-fer at the plate… but he did redeem enough of the day for me w/ that 2nd game 2-HR outburst, so I’m alright enough w/ missing that 1-hit shutout this time, especially if that means he’s righted the ship going forward… plus if that bolds well for their renewed shot at the playoffs, hehheh — as simply a baseball fan, would love to see Trout and him make it at least the once…

To be honest, for fantasy purposes, I don’t necessarily want Ohtani to keep doing quite that great, LOL, as I’m actually reasonably comfy in 1st in that one salary dynasty and am hoping the bidding doesn’t go much too high for me to match-and-keep him in that league… :-p
