Starter Notes August 12, 2024
RK PITCHER GAME 10 12 15+ IP ERA WHIP K-BB wOBA RK L30/Season NOTE
Chris Sale ATL at SFG x x x 123 2.71 0.95 26% 4th/6th Hasn’t allowed >2 ER in any of his L10: 2.40 ERA, 1.07 WHIP, 27% K-BB
Luis Gil NYY at CHW x x x 112 3.20 1.10 17% 30th/30th 8 BB in L2 could be fatigue indicator (9 BB in 5 starts before that), something to monitor but no shot I’d skip this start
Blake Snell SFG v ATL x x x 56 4.29 1.13 21% 26th/11th Found his groove: 1.15 ERA, 0.59 WHIP, 28% K-BB in his L6 (39 IP)
Sonny Gray STL at CIN x x x 118 3.72 1.09 25% 12th/16th B2B 7 IP/2 ER gems have quelled any lingering concerns brought on by his ugly July (6.75 ERA… but the 24% K-BB kept me confident in him)
Shota Imanaga CHC at CLE x x x 116 3.09 1.09 21% 22nd/10th The HRs have arrived as expected but he still holds pretty firm must-start status bc his good starts are excellent
Framber Valdez HOU at TBR x x x 116 3.56 1.25 15% 9th/8th Felt he was being harshly judged for a few hiccups early in the summer, but he’s fully back on track: 2.72 ERA, 1.05 WHIP, 22% K-BB in his L6
Brady Singer KCR at MIN x x x 125 2.88 1.16 15% 6th/8th Survived the hit parade v. BOS w/passable 5.7 IP/4 ER/6 K outing, I’m sticking w/him for the 2-step (at CIN this wknd)
Pablo López MIN v KCR x x x 124 4.65 1.14 22% 4th/10th A 9-start run of 6.47 ERA likely tanked his season mark, but he has rebounded well w/a 3.30 ERA, 1.03 WHIP, 18% K-BB in his L5
Brandon Pfaadt ARI v COL x x x 131 3.97 1.13 17% 11th/17th Keeping the ball in the park and success is following: 3.03 ERA, 1.08 WHIP, 15% K-BB, 0.9 HR9 in his L10
Taj Bradley TBR v HOU x x x 86 2.71 1.01 22% 19th/9th Standing by him after a couple hiccups, especially with a 2-step
Freddy Peralta MIL v LAD x x x 120 3.89 1.19 21% 10th/5th Waters are choppy of late (4.60 ERA, 1.51 WHIP, 15% K-BB) and LAD is tough, but I’m still running him virtually everywhere
Clayton Kershaw LAD at MIL x x x 7 5.87 1.96 7% 5th/13th Looked good v. PHI despite falling just shy of 5 IP and I’m eager to see what he can do in a 2-step (at STL this wknd)
Ben Lively 라이블리 CLE v CHC x x 105 3.42 1.15 14% 21st/19th ARI is cooking everyone so I won’t hit him too hard for that start but I am nervous about at MIL this wknd
Brayan Bello BOS v TEX x x 107 5.13 1.44 14% 28th/24th Feels like he’s thisclose to really putting it all together, but consistently punished by his HRs (5.08 ERA, 1.9 HR in L6)
Bowden Francis TOR at LAA x 44 5.68 1.44 11% 25th/23rd Held his own in 2 starts v. BAL since returning (5 ER in 10.7 IP) and now the schedule lightens up (at CHC this wknd)
Andrew Abbott CIN v STL x 121 3.41 1.29 10% 12th/28th WHIP surging meaning the HRs are now a huge problem: 1.17 WHIP, 1.4 HR9 in F18; 1.95 WHIP, 3.1 HR9 in L5
Joe Musgrove SDP v PIT x 49 5.66 1.48 14% 23rd/29th Straight off the IL with a trip to Coors lurking on the weekend
Tyler Mahle TEX at BOS #N/A #N/A #N/A #N/A 3rd/2nd Intrigued by his return to the mound, but this is going RIGHT into the fire off the IL w/MIN waiting this wknd, too
Davis Daniel LAA v TOR 22 4.91 1.18 19% 16th/15th
Marco Gonzales PIT at SDP 29 3.72 1.52 9% 13th/21st
Bradley Blalock COL at ARI 1 0.00 1.00 -25% 1st/6th
Ky Bush CHW v NYY #N/A #N/A #N/A #N/A 15th/15th
Recommendations for Roto 5×5 Leagues

The chart includes their 2024 stats (this changed over from last year’s stats on April 22nd), their opponent’s wOBA rank versus the pitcher’s handedness from this year so far (this is changed as of April 11th) and over the last 30 days, my general start/sit recommendation for 10-team, 12-team, and 15-team (or more) leagues, and then a note about them. Obviously, there are league sizes beyond those three so it’s essentially a shallow, medium, deep. If a pitcher only has an “x” in 15-team, it doesn’t mean there’s no potential use in 10s and 12s, but that just means it is a riskier stream as the league gets shallower.

These are general recommendations, and your league situation will carry more weight whether you are protecting ratios or chasing counting numbers. This is for standard 5×5 roto leagues. The thresholds for H2H starts are generally lower, especially in points leagues so I thought there would be more value focusing on roto and then you can generally expand these recommendations a bit for points leagues.
