Shortstop ADP Market Report: 1/20/2025

As we hit the beginning of draft season, it is important to monitor where players are being drafted on a regular basis. Throughout draft season, I will be doing that work for you with regular updates on the Average Draft Position on NFBC up until Opening Day.
You can read all the Market Reports here.

Top 100 Players Falling
Willy Adames (-21.44) – Adames is falling in the ADP after signing a long term deal in San Francisco. Adames is coming off of a fantastic season, but is moving to a worse park for right handed power. Oracle Park in San Francisco is the 28th best park for righties and he is leaving Milwaukee which was tied for the sixth best park in park factors for home runs. On top of that, the Brewers run a lot more than the Giants. The Brewers stole 217 bases in 2024 which was second in baseball while the giants only stole 68 bases which was the second worst in MLB. That being said, Adames is a reliable hitter and while his numbers will likely take a hit, maybe they won’t be as bad as the ADP suggests. Adames’ xHR in SF would have been 31 home runs and while the Giants aren’t super active on the base paths, they let Matt Chapman steal 15 bases, so there is no reason they might not let him at least steal when he has good opportunities. If the price continues to drop, he may turn into a value.
Top 200 Players Rising
Matt McLain (+22.61) – See the article in this series on second basemen.
Top 200 Players Falling
Zach Neto (-98.43) – Neto is dropping because he had offseason shoulder surgery. Neto is coming off of a breakout season, but there is no concrete timetable for his return and there is a high likelihood that he will miss the start of the season. There are also some concerns about whether the power breakout from last season is repeatable with mediocre power metrics. He should steal a bunch of bases though as the Angels love to run and once he is on the field, he will hit in a great spot in the lineup. Right now the ADP is plummeting and I usually like to take advantage of that, but there is a lot of risk here. He is best suited for leagues with IL spots and/or shallower formats where you can replace him easier.

Top 300 Players Falling
Trevor Story (-21.3) – Story is dropping after posting a second straight season in which he didn’t even get to 200 plate appearances. It is hard to know what Story even is at this point. When he was on the field last season, he didn’t hit the ball particularly hard, but he did steal six bases in just 106 plate appearances. He also made league average zone contact in spite of struggling with swing and miss. I wonder how much of his ADP is still impacted by his name value, but it’s hard to bet on Story unless we see him look good in spring training.
Jose Caballero (-29.33) – See the article in this series on second basemen.
Others of Note
Ha-Seong Kim 김하성 (-46.13) – Kim is dropping because he has not signed a deal with a Major League team and is coming off of offseason surgery and his availability for the beginning of the season is in question. Kim has a ton of talent, but his value will be determined by where he signs. Until we know that answer and when he will be ready for the season, I would stay away
Jordan Lawlar (-37.6) – Lawlar is falling because it seems unlikely that he will be on the team to start the season. Lawlar struggled with injury in 2024 and only played 23 games. He did play some winter league ball, but it would be in his best interest to start the year in AAA especially with the reports that he was playing different infield positions this winter.
Isiah Kiner-Falefa (+37.64) – IKF is rising in the ADP after his trade from Toronto to Pittsburgh landed him as the lead off hitter for the Pirates. Kiner-Falefa led off in every game he started for the Pirates except one after August 17th. While there isn’t a ton of speed or pop in the bat, there is enough of both and with him leading off, he rack up a bunch of runs in Pittsburgh.
