Various News and Notes

Noah Syndergaard was placed on the 10-Day DL with a finger injury. The issue appeared to pop up without warning, but apparently he was feeling enough soreness in the finger that he was checked out in the hospital. Manager Mickey Callaway would later say that he is expected back after a minimum stay. With Thor down, Seth Lugo will make a spot start in the rotation on Monday.

Brian McCann was placed on the 10-Day DL with knee soreness. McCann has been struggling as of late and this injury could point to why. Max Stassi will figure to gain more playing time in his absence as well as Evan Gattis who has heated up as of late, going .326/.400/.744 with five bombs in the last three weeks.

Jeff Samardzija left his start on Tuesday after only one inning. It was later revealed that he was dealing with shoulder stiffness and will now undergo an MRI to reveal the cause of the issue. He appears headed back to the DL after only eight starts this year after a late start because of a pectoral injury suffered in spring training.

Steven Matz was removed from his start on Tuesday with a finger injury. Following the game, x-rays were negative on the finger, so it appears there is no fracture at least. There could be an MRI taken if the discomfort doesn’t go away. Consider Matz day-to-day at this time.

Tyler Saladino left Tuesday’s game with an ankle injury. Saladino hurt the ankle stepping awkwardly on a force play at second base. After the game, it was announced that x-rays were negative, but will still head to the DL according to manager Craig Counsell. This may expedite the return of Orlando Arcia who was sent down last week to AAA.

Francisco Liriano was placed on the 10-Day DL with a hamstring injury. Liriano has been surprisingly good this season for the Tigers and has been a name mentioned in recent trade rumors as a name that could be moved pretty soon. This will obviously hurt his value on the market for the time being.

Kenta Maeda was removed from his start on Tuesday with a hip injury. Maeda now joins the legions of starting pitchers currently injured right now. Consider him day-to-day at this time.

Can’t stop looking at Bieber’s minor league stats. 244 K to just 15 BB. That’s insane. He just walks nobody. I assume he’ll get lit up but sure looks like he’s going to throw strikes.
