Sleeper and the Bust DK Contest

On most Tuesday’s and Friday’s and some other days, Paul Sporer and I will be doing a $5 draftkings game for anyone that is interested.

Quick Hits

Mike Yastrezemski was placed on the IL with a hamstring strain. There is no timetable for his return. In his absence, Austin Slater should pick up a lot of playing time because of his defensive ability which makes him an interesting pick up in deeper formats because of his ability to steal bases.

Ronald Acuna Jr. left Monday’s game with a shoulder injury after being hit by a pitch.

X-rays were negative so it appears he has avoided serious injury. Consider him day-to-day for now.

Aaron Judge was placed on the IL with a hip strain. It doesn’t sound like he will be out for an extended period of time as they have avoided putting him on the IL for a few days. The move is retroactive to April 28, so hopefully he only misses another week. Franchy Cordero was recalled to replace Judge on the roster.

Jose Urquidy was placed on the IL with a shoulder issue. There is no timetable for his return.

Yan Gomes left Monday’s game with a head injury. Gomes was injured when he was hit on the back of the head with a swing in the first inning against the Nationals. He will likely enter concussion protocol and could be placed on the 7-Day IL.

Luis Garcia left Monday’s game after eight pitches with pain in his elbow. This sounds really bad. He will undergo further testing on Tuesday. Consider him day-to-day for now, but get ready to drop him.

Various News and Notes

Bryce Harper will make his season debut on Tuesday after receiving clearance to play. Harper received elbow surgery six months ago and beat the timetable by a couple of months. He is expected to mostly DH, but there has been talk about him playing first base. It will be interesting to see if he plays every day or if the Phillies ease him in a little.

Domingo German threw 8.1 innings versus the Guardians, allowing one earned run on two hits and a walk while striking out six in the no-decision.

Clay Holmes would blow the save after German left the game up 2-0. German was great in the outing, relying on the curveball which registered a 49% CSW. German has been up and down this season, but he has been getting a ton of strikeouts over his last four starts. You need to be careful about the matchups, but he is a team streamer in 12 and 15 team leagues.

Nick Senzel went 3-for-4 with a home run in the loss to te Padres on Monday.

Senzel has been fantastic this season, hitting .310/.385/.500 with three home runs and two stolen bases. The former top prospect has struggled throughout his career to stay healthy, but he is healthy right now. The underlying skills aren’t amazing, but he has the ability to hit for power and average and swipe bags, so if he can stay on the field, he can be a valuable accumulator in one of the best hitter’s parks in baseball.

LaMonte Wade Jr. went 2-for-3 with a home run in the loss to the Astros.

Wade has quietly been very good for the Giants, hitting .260/.443/.575 with six home runs and a stolen base. He is walking more than he is striking out which is backed up by elite zone contact and a minuscule o-swing. He is also hitting lefties well which is nice to see on a platoon happy Giants team. If he can continue to get regular playing time, he could be an all format play moving forward.

Drew Smyly threw seven innings versus the Nationals, allowing one run on six hits and no walks while striking out two.

Smyly has been fantastic this season, doing a great job at limiting walks and home runs. There aren’t a lot of strikeouts and you can’t really trust him to stay healthy long term, but with a matchup against the Marlins next, you can keep streaming him until he falls apart.

Streaming Pitchers (Under 50% in CBS)

Pitcher for Today: Joey Lucchesi at DET

Lucchesi has pitched really well and gets a Tigers team that has the second worst strikeout percentage in Major League Baseball against left-handed pitching.

High Risk Options: Matt Strahm at LAD, Trevor Williams vs CHC, Michael Kopech vs MIN.

Pitcher for Tomorrow: Seth Lugo vs CIN

Lugo has pitched well this year and gets the Reds away from Great American Ballpark.

High Risk Options: Clarke Schmidt vs CLE, JP Sears vs SEA, Braxton Garrett vs ATL.

For those of you that would like to see how these picks play out, I have a doc I put together to track the stats from my recommended pitchers. It does not include the “High Risk Options.”
