Closer Chaos
Two closers were bombarded in the same game today. Rangers lefty Jacob Latz stepped into the top of the ninth inning with a 3-2 lead and gave up a walk, three runs, and a wild pitch before getting pulled for Cal Quantrill without securing an out. Diamondbacks ninth-inning man Paul Sewald came out in the bottom of the ninth and allowed two runs on a walk and three base hits. Sewald had two outs, but Juan Morillo came on in relief and gave up the game-winning hit to Danny Jansen, which was a third earned run on Sewald. It was Sewald’s fourth loss, but his first blown save. He should remain the closer, but the leash was slightly tightened, and Morillo would be the next man up. Latz isn’t likely to lose his job for this. The role is not fully secure for the southpaw, though no one else in the Rangers bullpen is more dependable at the moment.
Seranthony Domínguez earned his 10th save in 12 opportunities, though he allowed this two-run, 405-foot blast to Bobby Witt Jr.
Domínguez’s ERA ballooned from 3.24 to 4.10, and since he didn’t allow a free pass, his walk rate dropped from 13.9% to 13% (yay). Domínguez’s role as the White Sox closer is not in jeopardy.
Abner Uribe gave up a three-run homer to Padres lefty Gavin Sheets, taking the loss and blowing his second save of the season. Speaking of blowing it, I finally dropped Trevor Megill in my Main Event on Sunday after patiently holding for three weeks.
Meanwhile, top 30 ADP closers Mason Miller and Cade Smith each earned their 13th saves of the season. They each lead their respective leagues in that category.
Quick Hits
Brutal. Robby Snelling lands on the IL after one major league start. It’s a left elbow UCL sprain, so this is serious. Braxton Garrett will take Snelling’s place in the Marlins rotation.
Adding injury to recent statistical insults, Cal Raleigh was removed from Wednesday’s contest against the Astros with a right side injury. Raleigh missed three games just two weeks ago (May 2-4) with the same issue. Unironically, this was right around the time his 0-38 streak started. We should receive an update today. An IL stint is very likely.
Jacob Misiorowski is out of this world.
The Miz leads the majors with 80 strikeouts and a 39.5% strikeout rate. He hasn’t allowed a run in his three starts this month, and will take his 18.1 consecutive inning scoreless streak to Wrigley Field to face the Cubs on Monday.
Athletics rookie outfielder Henry Bolte’s debut was a splendid one. He singled in his first at-bat, reached on infield single in the fourth, drew a walk in the fifth and earned his first career RBI with a sacrifice fly in seventh.
Oh, and this was awesome, too:

Various News and Notes
Former minor-league K-BB% legend and current struggling minor-leaguer Zebby Matthews will be called up to make his first big-league start of 2026, today against the Marlins. Matthews rocked a K-BB% of just under 26% in the minors over the last two seasons, but has seen that rate drop massively (14.6%) in Triple-A this season. Matthews has woeful ratios (4.72 ERA, 1.51 WHIP) through his first seven starts there this season. Having Matthews make this start allows the Twins to give impressive rookie Connor Prielipp another day or two of rest in between starts.
Converted starter turned reliever turned starter Griffin Jax reached five innings for the first time in a game since the last start of his rookie season, October 2, 2021. Jax threw 66 pitches (up from 59 in his first start last week) against the Blue Jays on Wednesday. He didn’t allow a run, gave up four hits, walked four batters, and only struck out one. Jax is penciled in to make his next start on Tuesday, at home against the Orioles.
Lucas Giolito will make his San Diego Padres debut this Saturday, against the Mariners in Seattle. His final minor-league start went well on Sunday — 6 IP, 3 H, 1 ER, 0 BB, 3 K for Double-A Midland.
The Guardians have been running wild on the base paths. They’ve swiped 36 bags over the last month (29 games). Their 48 stolen bases rank second in the majors behind only the Marlins (51). José Ramírez stole two today and now leads the majors with 18.

Pitcher for Today: Mike Burrows, HOU (19%) vs. SEA
Today’s 11-game slate could be reduced further with rainstorms hitting the east coast. Phillies vs. Red Sox in Boston is the contest most likely to be postponed. That makes no difference for Burrows or those streaming him, hoping that his redemption tour continues. Burrows stumbled through his first seven starts in an Astros uniform then hurled his first gem of the season last Friday — seven scoreless innings with six strikeouts in Cincinnati. Burrows can get revenge on this Mariners squad that lit him up for 11 hits and six runs on April 13.
Other Options: N/A
Braxton Garrett (MIA, 8%) will be making his first start in the majors since 2024. The greeting might not be a friendly one as Garrett and the Marlins face a red-hot Byron Buxton. If truly desperate, I’d rather stream Griffin Canning (SD, 8%) in Milwaukee.
Pitchers for Tomorrow: Spencer Arrighetti, HOU (51%) vs. TEX
Slightly cheating here with Arrighetti a tick over our minimum roster% threshold. His lackluster control (13.6% in 2026) is always a concern, but he should be able to rack up the Ks and get the job done.
Other Options: Logan Henderson, MIL (34%) vs. SD; Dustin May, STL (15%) vs. KC

FWIW Zebby gave up 14 hits and 10 ER over 7 IP in his first two starts this season. In five starts since he’s thrown 27 innings with 8 ER (2.67), seven walks and 28 strikeouts.
