Quick Hits

Maikel Garcia was placed on the 10-Day IL with a hand strain. It doesn’t sound like this will keep him out much past the minimum stay. 

Lucas Giolto was placed on the 15-Day IL with elbow inflammation. There is no timetable for his return but these injuries usually do not end well. 

Juan Soto left Tuesday’s game with back spasms.

This doesn’t sound overly serious. Consider him day-to-day for now.

Nick Lodolo left Tuesday’s start after being hit by a comebacker.

Lodolo initially stayed in the game but left shortly after. X-rays were negative. Consider him day-to-day.

Edward Cabrera left Tuesday’s start with a leg injury.

He strained his hamstring and adductor muscles. He is expected to hit the 15-Day IL according to manager Craig Counsell. He will undergo further imaging to determine how serious the strains are.

Zack Gelof left Tuesday’s game after getting his hand stepped on by Matt Chapman while covering second base.

X-rays were negative and stitches were not needed so it appears he will be ok. Consider him day-to-day at this time.

Various News and Notes
Daulton Varsho went 3-for-6 with a home run in the loss to the Astros on Tuesday.

Varsho has been hot since returning from the IL and already has two home runs and a stolen base. He has made more contact this year after a change that has led to more line drive and less fly balls. This has made him a better hitter generally, but the power is down. It appears the power may be rebounding so now would be a good time to buy in to see if he is putting it all together.

Brandon Sproat threw six scoreless innings, allowing one hit and no walks while striking out 10 in the victory over the Reds on Tuesday.

Sproat had a 43% CSW his fastball and a 50% whiff rate on three different pitches. The talent has not been in question, but his struggles with command and control have been very apparent this season. To the Brewers credit, they have stuck with the rookie. If he can pitch like this consistently, there is a ton of upside in his arm.

Joe Mack went 2-for-4 with a home run in the victory over the Rangers on Tuesday.

Mack has been pedestrian offensively this season since his callup, hitting .259/.317/.405 with four home runs in 128 plate appearances, but he has been great behind the plate and the hit tool has been better than expected. There is more power in the bat so if he can keep the contact skills he has shown thus far, there is more upside here.

Ryan Johnson threw six scoreless innings against the Orioles, allowing just one hit and one walks while striking out eight in the victory on Tuesday.

This was Johnson’s best start as a Major Leaguer. He had a 50% whiff rate on both his splitter and sweeper while throwing all four of his pitches 22% or more which kept hitters off balanced. Johnson doesn’t have overwhelming stuff, but his strikeout numbers in the minors were impressive at times. He is mostly a streamer for now, but someone to keep an eye on.

Pitcher for Today: Martin Perez at SD

Perez has had a late season renaissance so far this year and is facing a struggling Padres offense that is terrible against lefties. 

Other Options: Randy Vazquez vs ATL, Shane Drohan at CIN

Pitcher for Tomorrow: Jeffrey Springs at SF

The Giants have been terrible versus lefties this season and Springs has been better on the road. This one is a bit risky, but one of the better matchups on a short slate. 

Other Options: Ian Seymour vs KC, Troy Melton vs HOU, Seth Lugo vs TB.
