Closer Chaos

Pete Fairbanks threw one-third of an inning, allowing three earned runs on two hits and a walk in the blown save against the Brewers on Sunday. 

Fairbanks has been terrible this season as the Marlins closer, allowing a 7.42 ERA and blowing three saves and losing four games. He does have 13 saves and three wins though and the Marlins have given him a lot of rope, but they are in the midst of a playoff race and could be in the market for a more reliable closer if they decide they want to be buyers at the deadline.

Quick Hits

Stephen Kolek was placed on the 15-Day IL with a flexor strain. This is odd. Kolek has been on the family emergency list so an injury was not expected to pop up. He is droppable in most formats given this news. 

Samuel Basallo left Sunday’s game with shoulder discomfort. 

Basallo stated after the game this has been a lingering issue. Consider him day-to-day for now.

Casey Mize left Sunday’s start after being hit in the hand with a comebacker.

X-rays on the wrist were negative but manager AJ Hinch stated he was also dealing with groin tightness as well. Consider him day-to-day for now.

Corbin Carroll left Sunday’s game with an elbow injury.

Carroll hyperextended the elbow on the swing but stated after the game that he was fine. Consider him day-to-day for now.

Various News and Notes
Austin Riley went 3-for-4 with two home runs in the victory over the Rangers on Sunday.

Riley has struggled this season, hitting .217/.296/.361 with 12 home runs and six stolen bases. His contact numbers are fine, but the quality of that contact is what has taken a hit. His barrel percentage is down 30 percentage points and his launch angle sweet spot percentile has gone from 75 percentile to 24. This offensive outburst is something to monitor as his bat speed has been good. If he can make better contact, he could have a massive second half.

Cole Young went 2-for-4 with a home run in the victory over the Giants on Sunday.

Young has quietly had a really nice rookie campaign, hitting .256/.315/.409 with 13 home runs and three stolen bases in 395 plate appearances. He has struggled some versus lefties so this home run was even more impressive being off of a good southpaw in Robbie Ray. Young is on a hot streak right now and should be picked up in league where he may be available as he has hit four home runs in July already.

Pitcher for Today: Kyle Leahy at LAA

Leahy has been extremely lucky this season as his underlying stats don’t support what he has been doing, but this is a good matchup and he is the best bet out of the available options. 

Other Options: Janson Junk at HOU, Mitch Bratt vs ATH, Tyler Mahle at KC

Pitcher for Tomorrow: Brandon Sproat vs NYM

Sproat has some risk, but this is a good matchup at home and he has pitched better as of late. 

Other Options: Trevor McDonald at KC, Reynaldo Lopez vs SD, Tatsuya Imai vs MIA, Jack Perkins at ARI, Noah Schultz at TEX
