Retirements

Tim Anderson announced his retirement from baseball on Monday. 

Anderson played 10 MLB seasons and finished his career with 98 home runs and 122 stolen bases with a .276/.307/.407 triple slash. He was a fantasy force for a number of years.

According to Brian McTaggart, Rob Refsnyder will retire from baseball.

Reports were that the Astros were interested in signing Refsnyder to a one year deal after he was released from the Mariners. However, it appears he will end his career and start the next phase of life.

Closer Chaos
Devin Williams was placed on the 15-Day IL with a shoulder strain. There is no timetable for his return and this could end his season with the Mets out of contention. Kodai Senga seems to be the next man up as the closer in New York after he registered his first save of the season on Monday night.

 

Quick Hits
Daniel Susac was placed on the 10-Day IL with a patellar fracture. This will end Susac’s season. The Giants called up Zach Morgan to take his spot on the roster.

Geraldo Perdomo left Monday’s game with a knee issue.

The Diamondbacks stated it was a precautionary move. Consider him day-to-day for now.

 

Various News and Notes
Dean Kremer threw seven innings against the Orioles, allowing one earned run on one hit and a walk while striking out seven in the victory Monday night.

Kremer has been great in his first two starts as a Twin and this one was likely extremely satisfying for him as it was against his former team. However, he has struggled a ton with command in his career and unless we see improvement there, he will be inconsistent.

Nolan Arenado went 2-for-4 with a grand slam and a stolen base in the victory over the Rockies on Monday.

Arenado has quietly had his best season in a few years, hitting .242/.322/.433 with 18 home runs and four stolen bases. He has been on a hot streak so far this month with four home runs already in August.

Zack Gelof went 2-for-4 with a home run in the loss to the Rays on Monday.

Gelof is hitting .277/.329/.494 with 12 home runs and eight stolen bases in 251 plate appearances. The hit tool is still not good which will lead to a lower batting average, but he has been running a pretty high BABIP. The A’s should give him plenty of at bats down the stretch and with the limited time left in the season, he could outrun the regression that is likely to come.

Pitcher for Today: Patrick Sandoval at TOR

The Blue Jays have been terrible versus lefties this season and Sandoval has pitched well since returning from the IL. 

Other Options: Mitch Bratt vs COL, Javier Assad at WAS, Cody Bradford at LAA, Ryan Johnson vs TEX, Bailey Ober vs BAL, Brandon Young at MIN.

Pitcher for Tomorrow: Dustin May at SD

May has pitched well lately and has a nice matchup. 

Other Options: Luis Castillo vs CIN, Zebby Matthews vs BAL, Jack Perkins vs TB, Ronel Blanco at SF, George Klassen vs TEX, Tyler Mahle vs NYM, Zac Thornton at ATL, David Peterson at WAS, Carmen Mlodzinski at MIA, Kyle Leahy vs PHI.

2 very surprising retirements. Anderson just fell off such a steep cliff there a couple years ago. Still, only 33.

Even though he’s already 35, Refsnyder might be even more surprising. I know he’s a short-side platoon bat but he’s been really good the 4 years before this year and had finally signed a big contract this year.

There is no way you can pick just one Tom Hamilton moment, but this whole sequence is right up there with his best.
