Cody Bellinger hit his first major-league home run Saturday night against the Phillies. He then followed that with his second major-league home run.

The thing that I like the most about Bellinger is the fact that he’s so athletic for a first baseman. He has a lot of power and when he was pitching in high school that power paralleled to his arm. He also evens himself out defensively and obviously shows he can play anywhere.

On the Agenda

  1. News and Notes
  2. Desmond’s back!
  3. Let’s talk Taylor

News and Notes

Adam Eaton’s season is over after he was diagnosed with a torn ACL. He’s been on fire this season hitting .297/.393/.462 with two home runs. Michael Taylor will be taking over for him in center field.

Shelby Miller will indeed have Tommy John surgery according to Barry M. Bloom of MLB.com. He will miss the rest of the season and possibly miss portions of 2018.

Brandon Crawford was activated from bereavement just in time to land on the 10-day disabled list with a strained groin.

Tyler Skaggs also lands on the disabled list. He suffered an oblique injury Friday night against the Rangers. He’s on the 10-day D.L., but when it comes to those injuries, those could definitely linger.

Desmond’s back!

Ian Desmond is to be activated from the D.L. and could get the start Sunday after MLB.com’s Thomas Harding reported he “seems poised” in his return.

He’s been out since mid-March with a fractured left hand. We love Desmond for his strong upside and hello…Coors Field.

Let’s talk Taylor

Like I mentioned earlier, Adam Eaton is out, and Michael Taylor is in.

This is looking like a blessing in disguise since we were unsure how much of a role he was going to getting heading into the season, but we are here now.

In 23 plate appearances this season, Taylor is slashing a .095/.130/.095 line with two hits and nine strikeouts. He does have power and speed, and if he can show what he showed in 2015, there could be some potential.

In the small sample size, he has increased his flyball rate so if he can maintain that power, he could be a decent R.O.I. in certain formats.

While he likely keeps the job, it’s not inconceivable that Michael A. Taylor performs poorly enough for the team to shift Trea Turner to CF and let Wilmer Difo take over at SS.

It feels like Taylor has had many opportunities to stick and never does anything with them. Difo swiped over 25 bags in the minors in 2015 and ’16. He hasn’t yet taken off in the majors but keep an eye out for him if he gets regular playing time and you need speed in deeper leagues.

It would be nice if we got more of Bellinger but Roberts has already said that he will be returned to AAA when the Dodgers get healthy. Apologies to those who blew their FAAB on him; here’s hoping he keeps raking and forces the team to make a tough decision.
