Paul Sporer’s Updated 2025 Starting Pitcher Rankings

I posted a preview of this in today’s SP Chart, but even that Top 75 has since changed so please use this as the reference going forward. Please feel free to post your questions & comments below, I’ll be in there responding all weekend. These aren’t meant o be ironclad through the rest of the season, any rankings update is a 4-6 week outlook for me so I’m not yet concerned about potential workload shutdowns and things of that nature. Additionally, this ranking specifically might have more of a 1-3 week shelf life with the Trade Deadline looming so I will run another update shortly after that if there are substantive changes across the league. I say “if” just because the deadline could be a dud if too many teams think they’re in it and no one really sells, but I don’t expect that as there should be enough true sellers already identified to facilitate some real movement.

Injured guys aren’t ranked outside a couple who are close to returning if I recall correctly. You can ask about someone, but if they’re not due back in the next week or two, I won’t really have much insight as it’ll be dependent on their health & return. There may be a few 6th-starter types ranked here as opposed to making sure I got 5 guys per team in the Top 150 as we don’t really need every Rockie on the list.

Yeah, I can see not Top 100 just given cloudy future usage but not top 150? Not over Jonathan Cannon [Fodder]?

I posted a comment on Boyle but it got flagged as spam, apparently because I edited it one too many times.

Boyle was moved to a multi-innings role and McClanahan just started a rehab and none of their starters has pitched poorly. Seems like an aggressive ranking.

I saw the flagged comment in my email, weird it got flagged! At any rate, I did originally rank when Ras being treated as an opener and I thought Boyle could be a stud as a follower. I still think that, but with Ras supposedly being moved back into a full SP role, that does lower Boyle’s outlook

Holding Rasmussen and a little worried about even his outlook with McClanahan coming back. Kind of wonder if they don’t turn it into a mish-mash of shortened multi-inning opener and bulk appearances for McClanahan, Rasmussen and Boyle as they try to build McClanahan back up and manage Rasmussen’s innings. A lot of ways they could go with it at that point.

Kind of frustrating for us in the world of fake baseball, but having too many quality arms is a good problem to have for the Rays 🙂

Whither Bailey Ober? He’s due back soon and I’d have to drop someone did make this list in dynasty to make room. The velocity was still low in the rehab start last night? Am I better off letting him go and letting someone else gamble he can return to form?

I can’t quit him when he gets back, I just didn’t see that he was back relatively soon. I’d say I still give a healthy Ober a 40-55 area ranking

Where do you see Ragans slotting in when he returns, and where would guys like Bubba and Painter wind up? (given Zebby/Sheehan slotting, I’m assuming those two might not crack top 60)

Yes Ragans would re-enter the Top 20 for sure and probably upwards of the 15 slot Gregg mentions. I’m a fan and healthy Ragans will go right back to must-start for me.

Bubba/Painter really depend on when they come up. Painter enters a great situation where even mediocre starts could yield some cheap Ws w/Philly’s support whereas Bubba is the direct opposite and could be more of a ratios/Ks play w/the Ws being scant in PIT. Not impossible that they’re Mis/Burns-like upon arrival and slot in the 25-50 range. I think both are must-adds ANYWHERE upon arrival just for that potential regardless of where I rank them.

Is Priester’s sudden rise for real?

I’m trying not to overreact, especially after the big LAD outing, but I’m a Priester believer and kept giving him some love in the SP Charts with the idea that good days could be ahead despite not a ton of obvious data pointing toward it.

Some of it was just faith in MIL’s development over PIT’s and the more time he got with Milwaukee has started to yield dividends with a 24% K-BB in his L6. That is inflated by the 2 big K games (COL/LAD) so I believe a lot more in the 4% BB than I do the 28% K until we see more consistent bat-missing as he has just 1 other game outside the COL/LAD starts w/>10% SwStr, but even a 22-24% K works with that kind of walk suppression.

And then a lot of it is just not quitting a highly pedigreed player. Prospect pedigree isn’t everything as there are misses allll the time, but I need more than 100 MLB IP to quit a 24-year old 1st rounder and 3x Top 100 guy.

Hmm, it’d be pretty high if he did in fact get back to regular starts, but are they going to let him get there? I felt like they were pretty comfortable keeping him in the 2-4 range w/one of their many big young arms going behind him to create a hybrid stud of sorts

Justin brought that up as a concern and it’s not unfair. I’m keeping a close eye on these next few to see if that is in fact the case, but giving Bubic some leeway for a pretty tough schedule during this semi-lull: NYY/TBR/LAD/ARI… also had TEX/PIT and ideally he should’ve handled them better, but he also wasn’t going to hold a sub-2.00 ERA all yr. He’s still missing enough bats w/at least 5 Ks in each of his L5

Why is 4.15 SIERA Noah Cameron at 49, while 2.93 SIERA Brandon Walter is at 79? Concerned that Walter loses his rotation spot?

I love SIERA, but we can’t ignore the glaring HR rates: 0.9 for NC | 1.7 for BW. And Walter’s strength that drives the good SIERA also makes his HR rate susceptible to staying very high: 2% BB.

A guy throwing 92 who just doesn’t walk anyone means lotta hittable pitches and thus, homers. I can see the 21% HR/FB coming down so that the HR rate is more palatable than 1.7, but I’m nervous that he’s a Bailey Ober-lite: soft-tossing strike-thrower with upside, but the HRs always looming overhead. And I know Ober has been rough this year so “lite” might seem weird given their years, but Ober gets some credit for several quality years under his belt.

Fair enough, from my perspective home run rates take a long time to stabilize so I’m not too concerned about Walter’s elevated HR rates in ~50 IP (he’s allowed a below average barrel rate and has a much higher GB% than Ober). And on the relation between HR/9 rates and BB%, intuitively it makes sense but is there actually evidence of a negative strong correlation? Kirby lives in the zone but has normal homer rates for instance.
