Paul Sporer: He’s in the glob so he can reasonably go as high as the 30s, but I’m just not super sold on him. Let’s get a sub-4.00 ERA season

Spring’s Sprung?: I asked Jeff this question earlier. Curious your take as well: Any pitchers stand out to you so far in spring as potential breakout guys? Last year we saw Morton and Jordan Montgomery. Anyone like that this year?  (He said Wade Miley)

Paul Sporer: I haven’t seen anything jump out just yet

Greg: You buying Luis Severino’s breakout?

Paul Sporer: Ya, what’s not to buy? The ADP is definitely aggressive, but the skills & stuff are unquestionably there.

Greg: In a dynasty, you picking Olson or Bird?

Paul Sporer: Flip a coin really, but I’d probably go Bird

Mike: Can Charlie Morton repeat last season if healthy?

Paul Sporer: For sure, he showed his skill surge from Philly was legit so I definitely believe he can maintain his success. I wouldn’t bet on more than 150 IP, though, given the history

RYan: Late round arm you find yourself drafting a lot?

Paul Sporer: Gausman, Wacha, Musgrove, Gohara

Ben: When do MLB teams do DL housekeeping? I’ve drafted guys like Conforto (not on DL yet) and Britton (already listed) and want the temporary roster spot.

Paul Sporer: Usually pretty late in Spring

Philly Phan: Where in the first round would you take Rizzo in Yahoo leagues as he is 2b eligible? Or does it not change much for him?

Paul Sporer: I don’t think it changes things *that* much. I’m fine with him in the backend of a 15-teamer, but I’m still mostly taking him 2nd rd even w/the 2B

Ed: What closers are you targetting this year?

Paul Sporer: Chapman, Rivero, Hand, Iglesias, Allen, Treinen, Herrera

Paul Sporer: Arenado’s my #3, but between your pair, Harper by a hair

Paul Sporer: Kinda digging Colin Moran’s swing changes that unlocked some power paired with a full time role

Al: I’ve got the option to keep Donaldson for the next 2 years at the cost of each years 3rd round pick.  (12 team , 7×7 league with OBP + Doubles as categories).  Too much risk for a 32 year old?

Paul Sporer: I don’t really like extending players as a general rule, but my exceptions are more on young hitters. I’d rather just keep Donaldson for one year

Paul Sporer: If it’s a draft, you can do a slow draft via most sites. It’s not ideal, but sometimes you have an extenuating circumstance for a given season

Colby: In a keeper league where first 7 are keeper rounds. I will need a 1st basemen after the 7th. Who do you see as having value outside the top 7 rounds? I’m really only seeing Bour, Santana, Zimmerman, and Belt as beating their ADPs.

Paul Sporer: I like Bour & Santana as well McMahon, Alonso, and Jose Martinez

Albies and Forever: 5 x 5 with OPS, AL-Only. Keeping Gallo at $1.  Can keep one of the following for this season at this price.  Who would you keep? Dozier $30
Abreu $26
Hays $10
Cobb $7
Clevinger $5
Giolito $4

Paul Sporer: I’d go with one of the stud hitters. Save the $4 and go with Abreu. AL 1B is rough.

Gest : Do you know of any differences between the MLB ball and Japanese balls, like the seams being different or anything?

Paul Sporer: I believe it’s smaller

Paul Sporer: I am and yes, if he shows out. Even at 500 PA, though, I really like him

Odapm: Logistically speaking, does Alex Reyes start the year on the DL or in the minor leagues?

Jay: Know you and Eno were pretty ‘in’ on Mikolas as his early ADP. Backing him up any with spring struggles?

Paul Sporer: I mean, he’s so cheap that I don’t think there needs to be any change. The market will probably give you an even deeper discount now

Paul Sporer: If that’s it, yes, unless you’re in a 15-team NL Only or something

Turp: Devers for Beni in keeper forever, 12 team, ops league – who you got?

Paul Sporer: Beni. Both high end prospects, Beni is a little more diverse skill set

Yeezy Season: Are you all in on Acuna as a lot of experts are? Trout light possibly in career?

Paul Sporer: Not giving anyone a Trout-anything tag, but I am in on him as having high probability to contribute immediately. I do worry a little that he skipped through those levels so fast that there was no time to adjust so he won’t just extrapolate those #s for 5 months at the MLB level

Eric: Any shot Bradley is the Dbacks closer?

Paul Sporer: Definitely a shot. I’m a huge fan, but I can totally see them going w/Boxy or Hirano to keep Archie for 2-inning stints in the middle of the game. I’m still drafting him bc he’s got value even without SVs

Jake: Benintendi or Yelich in the third?

Paul Sporer: Yelich for sure. All the comps last yr were that Beni is Yelich Jr., so gimme the fully formed version going to his best setup yet

Just Some Guy: and is Acuna worth holding onto if he’s on your bench for ___ time?

Paul Sporer: League type and bench size really matter, but I’d hold up to a month in most situations

Tony: Buying into Kyle Gibson’s Aug/Sep? 59/13 K/BB in 63 IP, 3.55 ERA/3.54 xFIP after some pitch mix changes.

Paul Sporer: Mehhh, it was certainly schedule-influenced, too. I’ve been on the Gibson merry go round many times before so I’m pretty suspect about jumping back in

Randy: What catcher ends up on your roster the most in drafts?

Paul Sporer: Grandal, Barnes, Castillo, Ramos

Eric: Is Eric Hosmer Carlos Santana with one year of hitting for average? Or will San Diego ruin him

Paul Sporer: One year? He’s a .284 career hitter. I think he’ll continue to be himself in SD.

Derek: Hi Paul – I’ve got one keeper spot available in a 16 team league for either Albies, Felipe Rivero, Pham or Robbie Ray.  Scoring categories are all standard plus triples, total bases, and holds.  My other keepers are Stanton, Jose Ramirez, Posey and Strasburg.  Which keeper would you take?  I’m really tempted to take Albies because of the triples, but my league tends to draft for saves early so Rivero is enticing too… Who would you keep?

Paul Sporer: Albies for me

Seth: When is the earliest you are taking Albies in re-draft leagues?

Paul Sporer: 75 is where I took him in The Great Fantasy Baseball Invitational

Sandy Ravage: Do you think Leonys Martin is worth a roster spot in an AL 10 tm roto? Love the idea of the steals, but not sure about ability/play time. Leonys or Teoscar Hernandez for 2018?

Paul Sporer: Ya I think he’s worth a spot in AL 10 tm, but I do prefer Teoscar

Gest : How seriously are you taking Daniel Murphys injury?

Paul Sporer: Pretty seriously. Microfracture surgery is no joke and he’s not going to be ready for OD

Bryan: With the 4 man rotation, are there any Rays relievers getting more innings that are worth monitoring?

Paul Sporer: I don’t know that it’s going to change much since it’s really the schedule that allows the 4-man more than a fundamental change in strategy

Paul Sporer: Fair deal. I probably go for Ozuna between the two sides

Paul Sporer: Ya that’s pretty fair, especially when you consider inflation

Schoop of ice cream: Paul, why is it that adp for snake drafts is readily available, but there doesn’t seem to be any publicly available average auction value? Secondary question, how would you go about converting round value into auction dollars for a keeper league thinking about making the switch?

Paul Sporer: Mainly because it’d be really worthless. Auction dynamics are so much more varied than draft dynamics that even an average value just wouldn’t be that useful. Russell Archer: Have Arenado (1) and C. Seager (5) as keepers; for the last one (parenthesis is round pick lost): Ozuna (9), Benetendi (10), or Nola (14)?

Paul Sporer: Hmm, that’s a great trio to choose from as I don’t think you can go wrong. I think I’d go for Nola as a 14th.

LetHerEat: Keepers are Betts/Blackmon.  For my 1st pick I’m curious about how i weigh the talent likely to available (possibly JD Martinez, or Dozier, Springer, Jose Ramirez, and the like) VS dropping down in the rankings a little to get Gary Sanchez bc of his talent/position?

Paul Sporer: If it’s a 2 C, you could push Sanchez, but otherwise don’t get too cute

Michk54: Hey Paul, fellow Michigander here. Who is a better value in a deep AL only auction keeper league, J Polanco at $10 or Moose at $23? 3B will not be deep in the auction due to keepers;  I have Bregman to fill either SS or 3B as needed. Moose worth extra $13? Thanks.

Paul Sporer: Woo, mitten represent! Moose isn’t worth the extra $13 when you can shift Breg over, I’ll go Polanco for sure

MJ: Puig, Pham, or Marcell Ozuna in a 5X5 leage with OBP replacing average?

Paul Sporer: I’ll go Pham. The skills are there. While age-29 breakouts are rare, there’s nothing about the actual performance that suggests he will collapse. If he’s healthy, he’s a stud

Kimo: Pick 3 keepers in an OPS league: Arenado, Goldy, Seager, Cruz, deGrom, Nola

Paul Sporer: Nolan, Goldy, deGrom

Kakie Bryan: Is there anything in Mazara’s profile that might indicate a possible breakout? Seems like he was pretty much the same hitter between 2016 and 2017

Paul Sporer: Not really other than he’s a high pedigree prospect who has held his own for two full seasons as the youngest and then 2nd-youngest qualified hitter in baseball. There won’t always be flashing neon signs pointing to a surge. Hoping to see some improvement vL, but I like the player

Murray D: I’m in a 15 team Roto league where I keep 2 pitchers. I already have Kershaw, should I then keep Kenley or Verlander?  Thanks.

Paul Sporer: I’d probably go Kenley. Could feasibly end up with the top SP and top RP.

Maris: 10 team points league. You rather have Myers and Cody Allen or Osuna (Tor) and Jorge Polanco?

Paul Sporer: thanks for the follow. I don’t think it’s either, tbh, it just kinda is. you had a mental image and I didn’t quite fit it. even if you thought I’d look better, I wouldn’t be bothered

Michk54: What kind of year  do you expect from Tanaka this year? Debating acquiring him in my auction league and he is pretty much at full price at $25 ($260 cap). Solid value?  Thanks.

Paul Sporer: I’m still pretty obsessed – he was my AL CY last year. I think $25 is certainly fair, but it’s upper end and thus there isn’t a lot of profit potential in that price

Grand Barn Door: How do you feel about tethering barnes and grandal in a 1 C league, similar to RB’s in football? I’ve got the turn and 14  picks from rounds 6-13 in a 5 keeper 12 team, so thinking of going back to back rounds 9/10 which is players around adp 180, and barnes has 2b eligibility

Paul Sporer: The 2B eligibility is nothing. Never play a guy with C-eligibility at any other position. I do like pairing them if you have the ability to switch them in and out

Slander: Maybe a better question – Dahl, Margot, Polanco, Altherr – do you see a breakout in this bunch?

Paul Sporer: I really like Margot and Polanco a lot, tbh

Joe: Last keeper in a 12 team points (no negative points for K’s): Mazara for 10 or Moncada for 6?

Paul Sporer: I just sang the virtues of Mazara so I’m fine with him at the price, but I’ll go Moncada at nearly half the price

Paul Sporer: 35 is definitely viable. He had a nice 8% BB in the minors which isn’t *elite*, but pairs very well with his high contact approach.

Paul Sporer: Ya I think the ways you compose a staff become different

Paul Sporer: I don’t really get many “floor” guys in H2H cats. Since I’m really looking at short samples in the week-to-week, I’m more open to volatility

Joe: What the hell do you do with Domingo Santana in keeper leagues? I can keep him for $6 in a 12 team points but also could keep Mazara for $10 or Moncada for $6.

Paul Sporer: $6 is a price that can’t hurt you even if he doesn’t match last year’s PT. I’d probably still go Moncada, but he’s 2nd

mr g: Let’s talk about C. Hernandez. Phillies new skipper seems to be preaching aggressiveness on basepaths. They’re trying out Kingery all over the diamond.  Cesar added some bulk to gain more power. Dude could hit .290 with 15 HRs and 20-30 SBs plus score close to 100 runs. Isn’t that what people are reaching for Abies to get? Hernndez has hit consistently with a track record. Can’t find an expert who will rank him in the top 10. Why?

Paul Sporer: I like Hernandez, but he’s also 28 so you can’t rank him based on a 99th percentile projection like .280/15/25/100. We did speak very well of him, though – https://www.fangraphs.com/fantasy/the-sleeper-and-the-bust-episode-530…

E: Trying to decide on my last keeper, will Conforto be healthy? Could keep him in the last round.

Paul Sporer: He will not, but he’s still a last round worthy keep

Tyler: How many bombs does Bogaerts hit this year?

Paul Sporer: 18

Jake: Saw the catcher rankings. Seems like Grandal has a much clearer grasp on playing time than we expected but the consensus is still kind of down on him. Care to make the positive case?

Paul Sporer: Was already a top 10 C last year and has the job. I love Barnes, but he’s dealing with an elbow that keeps him from catching right now

Grant: My problem is I hold on to underperforming players for too long and miss out on waiver wire gems. How can I improve this quality?

Paul Sporer: It’s tough and definitely a problem I share. I think you just need to force yourself to act quicker. You’re going to have misses and sometimes cut the guy who gets it back on track. Those sting and they’re memorable when you don’t make a lot of moves, but you’re wisely-but-aggressively churning the backend of your roster, the hits will outweigh the misses more often

Mike: Who do you pick #2 after Trout in a 5×5 with OBP instead of AVG?  Is it still Altuve, or do you go elsewhere?

Paul Sporer: Still Altuve, his OBP is awesome, too

Alden: Where would you be looking to draft Senzel in a 12 team league with keepers that last forever?

Paul Sporer: Maybe a reserve pick

HappyFunBall: How much do you believe in Quintata’s 2nd half K rate? Is he an ace now?

Paul Sporer: He fanned more than ever all year, not just the 2H. Facing SPs all year alone will curb some regression and keep him north of his 21% career mark

Hopeful: Is there a scenario where Brett Phillips gets meaningful ABs this year?

Paul Sporer: Not a high probability one

tacopocket: uptons no longer sexy but he had a very good year last year.  do i trade him @23 for greinke at $27?   I’m afraid starters will be inflated and i’ll have to spend $80 on 2 aces

Paul Sporer: I wouldn’t do that. You don’t *have* to buy 2 $40 arms. If it’s going that high, work the middle

Gordo: Would you rather have a $20 Lindor or a $6 Bregman in a win now year?

Paul Sporer: Damn that’s tough. I think saving $14 is worth going Bregs here

Hopeful: Last SP in deep NL only – Perdomo or Amir Garrett?

Paul Sporer: Garrett has more upside. Perdomo only has two pitches and doesn’t miss bats

EBS: I know you may not be able to to be rational about Albies, but how do you compare him to Robles or Senzel in a keeper? Both this year and over the next 5 years.

Paul Sporer: I still favor him. He’s got a role in hand and has already had a flash of MLB success

Ianotta Gettin’ Love: Any reason why Ianetta is not getting much love as COL’s starting C?  He’s nothing to write home about, but he hit 17 homers in about 90 games + now gets to have Coors + no platoon on his side…

Paul Sporer: He *could*, sure, but Rizzo could out-homer him, too. Plus even with the same 41/32 split, I’ll take 60 pts of OBP over 9 homers

E: Is position flexibility overrated?

Paul Sporer: It’s underrated, if anything

Willie: 15 NFBC 50 player roster – 10th pick, crazy to go SP other than Kershaw in this spot?

Paul Sporer: Not crazy, no. I have Scherzer 1 in my rankings. I just don’t think it’s out of bounds to expect another sub-200 IP from Kersh as the Dodgers look to keep him fresh for October

Guest: Does Bregman struggle a bit out of gate again or is this the year he goes wire to wire?

Paul Sporer: No idea, but there’s no inherent reason to expect another struggle

Paul Sporer: I’m not super hyped on Giles, but he’s v similar to Diaz and on a much worse team so it’s gotta be Diaz

Comforto Food: When your real life team is looking bad, does it make you more or less excited for fantasy season? Logic says more, but I’m feeling latter…

Paul Sporer: Ya, I can totally understand the latter. But then once you get in that draft room….

Slamboni: ESPNs projections on Hanley are…well….not great. Is he only worth rostering in deep leagues (AL only/12+ teams) or do you almost have to get mitch moreland too for value?

Paul Sporer: Ya I don’t really see a need to roster him in 10-teamer, but that’s OK, that’s the case for tons of guys. If he’s clicking, you jump early. Healthy Hanley can still merk

Jon: Should I be pretty jazzed about trading for both Price and Tanaka this offseason?

Paul Sporer: I’m a pretty big fan of both, so yes

Don’t ShiNTS your pants: How big does your bench have to be to justify rostering a second catcher? (Lots of people want to Grandal/Barnes, but not hitting your GP at other positions makes that useless)

Paul Sporer: 5+

Sanity: True or False: Intentional walks issued from the dugout should not count against a pitcher’s stats.

Paul Sporer: I guess True, but it doesn’t really matter. The leader had 8 last year so it doesn’t really impact a player’s stats

Dynasty shmynasty: Yelich for Tatis Jr and Khrush Davis in 6×6 OPS dynasty league? Which side do you prefer?

Paul Sporer: Yelich, but that seems pretty fair

Craig : Getting any shares of Wong? Seems to be having a good spring and is running quite a bit

Paul Sporer: Not really. Justin and I spoke well enough of him on the middle infield pod yesterday, but I’m just choosing other guys in that range

Jeff: I own Arrieta. Humor me.

Paul Sporer: Looking at him on your roster should provide enough humor, no?

New Bork: What are the virtues of cornering the market for a particular position? I have Rendon, J Ramirez, and Bregman and don’t even plan to start any of them at 3rd (Freeman).

Paul Sporer: I think it has a bigger impact at C and RP where the dropoffs are much bigger. You’re getting 3 studs and someone will likely have a lesser 3B because of it, but that specific strategy is really just getting very good players as opposed to drowning the 3B pool

Paul Sporer: Good question, I’ll ask about that and try to have an answer at a future chat

Matt: If you had to pick one, would you be more offended if I preemptively thought were were an ugly guy, and then decided otherwise after seeing you, or assumed you to be attractive, and realized my grave mistake after seeing the picture?

Paul Sporer: No one assumes I’m hot… they inherently know it to be true

Bork: Have you ever had a draft scheduled for 7 am? How did it go?

Paul Sporer: Think my earliest was 8 AM and it went well enough

Gest : What is your preferred slot in which to draft?

Paul Sporer: Can’t really go wrong this year, at least in the first two rounds. Gotta map out some ADP trees for 3-5 rounds (that’s about as far as you can go before it really opens up). I like one of the ends.

JJB: Any advice for a first live auction draft?

Paul Sporer: Oh I’m sorry this 2+ hour chat has had some lulls in it, my bad man
