Paul Sporer Baseball Chat – February 7th, 2020

Transcript is below!

1:15

Paul Sporer: Welcome to my 2020 chat debut! As mentioned in the post, I’ll be moving to Wednesdays after this, but I wasn’t available this past Wednesday and I still wanted to chat so we’re squeezing it in this afternoon!

1:16

LABR: Have you regretted any picks from the LABR draft yet or is that too soon to process

1:17

Paul Sporer: LOL way too soon. Unlikely to regret any even down the line. Some won’t work, but we’re happy with the process behind the picks and we’ll see how the results pan out

1:17

The Champ: Any idea when your Beat Paul Sporer Online Championship league will be happening on the NFBC?

1:17

Paul Sporer: I’ll be setting it up soon to take place in February, stay tuned!

1:19

DJ Tanner: Clase or Karinchak in a holds league (K/9 is helpful)? Who has more upside?

1:20

Paul Sporer: Hate to fence-sit, but I think both are gonna be in the high leverage situations that will breed holds. I’ll lean Karinchak as he has more swing-and-miss excellence that will breed ks

1:20

Scott TINSTAAPP: Return of the Chat…boom

1:20

Paul Sporer: We’re back!

1:20

Bryan: In a 12-team keep 10, would you rather have Woodruff and Morton, or Flaherty and $20 extra in the draft. $300 auction budget (QS, ERA, WHIP, K, K/9, SV+HD)

1:22

Paul Sporer: So It’s Woody/Morton or Flaherty & $20? Gimme Woody/Morton. It’s close and I’ve raised Flaherty since my last SP ranks, but I’m a big fan of the duo

1:22

Yankee Doodle: Greetings! I’m in a $260 10-team AL-only keeper league and the Catcher position is an absolute cesspool. Sanchez, S. Perez and Garver are being kept, which makes it even worse. Would you be so kind to name one or two low end backstops I could target with my final dollar at the auction? Much appreciated.

1:23

Paul Sporer: Tom Murphy, Sean Murphy, Robinson Chirinos, Danny Jansen, and Jason Castro. Some of those will go higher than a dollar, but I like that group

1:23

Scott TINSTAAPP: If everything breaks right for Spencer Turnbull, what do you think his ceiling is?

1:24

Paul Sporer: Mid-3.00s ERA, 1.20s WHIP, and a K-per-inning

1:24

Perry Farrell: I know you love some Jorge Mateo, but who are some of your other favorite American League SS that can be grabbed late in drafts?

1:25

Paul Sporer: Adames, Goodrum, Peraza (not a huge fan, but he should have a job), Nicky Lopez, Myles Straw, and Royce Lewis (as a stash)

1:27

Joseph: This is obviously way easier said than done, but Matt Boyd must be aware that he could be a top pitcher by not giving up so many HR. Is that something he can actually fix?

1:29

Paul Sporer: It *can* be fixed, but of course it’s not easy or else he and others dealing with HR issues would fix it. It’d require an approach change with his fastball and sometimes that can lead to more problems than it fixes so we’ll see what he has done this offseason (I believe he’s a Driveline guy)

1:29

Matt: Never used ottneu, but it looks fun. I know you endorse it, but why should I use the site??

1:30

Paul Sporer: You should play it if you’re looking for a really deep system and new way to play. If you’re looking for something outside of the standard, I think Ottoneu could be right up your alley.

1:30

Guest: Hey Paul, what are your thoughts on Eloy Jimenez? Think he could break out this year?

1:30

Paul Sporer: For sure. He was quite good last year when you really look at it.

1:30

Jonny : Does glasnow need a third pitch to become an Ace or is durability the main question?

1:31

Paul Sporer: To be an ace, he needs a third pitch. I don’t think you can be a full on MLB ace with just two pitches. You can fake fantasy acedom with 2, but even that eventually runs out, too.

1:31

Anonymous: NFBC newbie Q: with 9 ‘P’ spots, what’s the normal meta for # of SP vs RP to start the year?

1:32

Paul Sporer: If it’s something with an overall component meaning you NEED saves, it’s 7/2 or 6/3 depending how good your closers are. If you go 7/2, usually take an RP flier on the reserve roster, too

1:32

Jorge: Would you be so kind as to rate the following RP if I’m looking for great peripherals and the potential for a few saves: T. May, Bummer, Barnes, Pressly. Thanks!

1:33

Tony: I feel like Cesar Hernandez and Jose Peraza could provide significant fantasy value compared to their current costs, so why do they seem like afterthoughts to most fantasy pundits?

1:34

Paul Sporer: Because they’re boring in Hernandez’s case and bad in Peraza’s. But ya, they’re going to play and both are 2B eligible, which is the shallowest non-C position so they’re worthy deep leaguers

1:34

Old-Timer: I’ve been eyeing Correa, K. Davis and M. Franco in my drafts as their value seems to have dropped coming off a rough 2019. Do you expect all three to have much better seasons in 2020 or should I stay clear of them?

1:35

Paul Sporer: Classic “last year’s bum” tactic there… well with Correa and Davis, at least. Franco is an every year bum, but I cannot quit that guy so I won’t crush you for taking the super-late flier on him.

1:35

Eric: A few of the panelists on the MLB Network seem to think that the signs stealing fiasco is not over for the Astros batters and a few of them might still get suspended during the season. Do you think that notion has any merit, or should all Astros bats be drafted without concern?

1:35

Paul Sporer: I haven’t seen anything to suggest that. Unless something changes, the commissioner said the players aren’t being punished

1:35

Texas Dolly: Any benefit to drafting both Guzman and Bird and combining both to use in my UTIL slot?

1:35

Paul Sporer: No, not even in AL Only. Not a fan of Guzman at all. I like Solak to usurp Guzman and own that 1B job

1:36

Franmil Reyes: It seems to me that you could get a way better value getting me at ADP 161 (fantrax) rather than taking Eloy at ADP 66. Am I out to lunch?

1:38

Paul Sporer: You’re getting a lot lower ceiling, too, though. Jimenez could realistically hit .300 while matching Franmil’s power output. I like Reyes just fine, but Jimenez is definitely the more talented all around hitter

1:38

DJ Tanner: Any chance Brendan Rodgers can get a starting spot in ST or do you think COL is set with McMahon at 2B and Murphy at 1B?

1:38

Paul Sporer: I think they’re mostly set with those two, but is Rodgers fully healthy heading into spring?

1:38

Bill: Merrifield seems to be moving up ADP. Whats a realistic SB estimate for him? I worry it’s more 12-15, which is just not that valuable over guys who get chip-in 8-10.

1:40

Paul Sporer: The annoyance of SBs… it’s really hard to pin down. He could shave more off of last year’s 20 or push back up to 30+. The thing is, even with the major SB falloff, he was still a top 40 player so I’m still open to taking him. I think the 12-15 projection is the least likely between that, another season of 20, and a return to 30+

1:40

Cory: Paul, I want to trade for a top pitcher to supplement Nola, Ryu and Buehler.  Would you trade 5 years of Soler or Moose for 3 years of Clevinger?

1:41

Paul Sporer: Ya I’d be down to move either. I favor Moose with 2B/3B elig., but if your trade partner will take either, just give him your least fave

1:41

Fresh Basil: Must cut one Laureano or Kepler?

1:41

Paul Sporer: Assuming standard 5×5, gotta be Kepdog

1:41

Joe E: Keep 1 in an nl only: darvish $17, dahl $13 or smith (la Catcher) $8?

1:42

Paul Sporer: I’m gonna take Darvish. I’m a huge fan of last year’s command improvements. Meanwhile, Dahl’s health track record is problematic and I’m not super hot on young catchers

1:42

tacopocket: Hey paul.  missed your chats.   need keeper advice.   5X5 12 man roto league with $300 at auction.  I need to pick 5 of these:   $4 robles, $10 meadows, $12 olson, $14 suarez,$19 villar, $37 verlander, $32 rendon.   i was locked into olson, suarez, robles, and verlander (the top 4 aces usually go for $50+) but willing to listen to other opinions.  Help?

1:43

Paul Sporer: Suarez out even at $14 with the injury. It’s a good price, but we’re splitting hairs here so a bum shoulder pushes him out for me. JV at that price seems worth it and I’d take Robles/Meadows/Olson to go with him.

1:43

Dave: How bullish are you on Luke Voit?

1:44

Paul Sporer: Remarkably so. I know there is some playing time concern with Andujar lingering, but I think he plays when healthy and he absolutely rakes. I think he’s 35 HR waiting to happen with plenty of R/RBI as part of that lineup. And there’s even some AVG upside as I could see him hitting .280+ given how well he strikes the ball

1:44

Matt W. : Opinion on McCutchen his projects seem a little light in runs?

1:45

Paul Sporer: Coming off an ACL and being 33 y/o, I get why the projections might be a bit light, but I’m buying back in for sure. I’m a huge fan.

1:45

CB Slider: Roto keep forever.  Would you rather keep J.Jimenez and his immediate saves or Karinchak?  RPs are sketchy, but is Karinichak potentially something special?

1:47

Paul Sporer: RP are sketchy and annoying and I like Karinchak, but I’ll take Jimenez. He’s pretty nasty, too: 32% K and 15% SwStr. Tigers are obv a bad team again, but I think he’ll get 25-30 saves. Plus, they could be one of the more viable low level teams in the 2H if and when the likes of Manning/Mize/Skubal are called up

1:47

BarryBondsJuicedForOurSins: Spencer Howard and Nate Pearson for Jose Berrios…who says yes quicker?

1:47

Paul Sporer: Really depends on format — y’all please make sure you’re including format and pertinent league info or else it’s hard to give a concrete answer on stuff. If this a standard 15-tm 5×5, I want Berrios

1:48

Waiting for Verdugo: Does Maeda’s road numbers worry you now that he’s out of LA?

1:49

Paul Sporer: Not really, no. Virtually all players are better at home. Just taking their road numbers as a projection when they’re traded is faulty. Target Field isn’t worrisome and he gets to face KC and DET. I think he’ll be good wit MIN… if the trade even goes through

1:49

Scott TINSTAAPP: Listened to the LABR draft pod, good times!  Laughed hard when Mason said “always love those injury stashes”, lol.  Yea no kidding. I guess he doesn’t learn!

1:49

Paul Sporer: lolololol thanks for listening!!

1:50

James: Keeper question: 6×6, $260, 18 teamer. Keep 4: Villar $19, Arenado $36, Meadows $6, Robles $6, Yordan $6

1:51

Paul Sporer: Robles/Meadows/Alvarez/Arenado… I’ll take the savings on the first 3 and get Arenado. Robles and Villar are a bit redundant (outside of position eligbility, but I don’t think infield v. outfield is worth $13)

1:51

rainmaker: Is there any method to the madness of ranking Severino, Kluber, and Carrasco?

1:53

Paul Sporer: Spring will offer a lot more clarity on the trio, tbh. For now here’s where I’ve got em: https://fantasy.fangraphs.com/top-125-sp-for-2020

1:53

Biggy: I’m in 10 team H2H roto keeper.  (I won last year!)  I don’t want to keep a pitcher usually.  Would you keep Flaherty or Kershaw over Albies?

1:53

Paul Sporer: All costs being equal, no I’d keep Albies personally.

1:53

Bilbo: Thoughts on Danny Santana this year? I’m sure he won’t put up 2019 numbers, but how close will he get? His power-speed combo and positional eligibility make me want to value him higher than I’m seeing on rankings…

1:57

Paul Sporer: I definitely have concerns with his 30% K and 5% BB plate skills. I think he’ll get some substantial playing time so he’ll be a speed component of some note, but I’m seeing more of a 18-20 HR/22-25 SB if he gets 600+ PA

1:57

Biggy: I disagree on your Kris Bryant take.  He’s been hurt!  Do you think he’s just done, injury prone, or possible big bounceback?

1:58

Paul Sporer: Disagree on what take exactly? I think he’s fine. He already bounced back last year (135 wRC+). He’s good, but not a premium fantasy asset.

1:58

dbrewster: How many innings does Stripling get now that he is away from LA? Was he restrictions due to the team or does he have actual  health concerns that makes it worth limiting his usage?

1:59

Paul Sporer: Well he’s not locked into LAA yet… the Joc/Strip deal would fall through if the Mookie part doesn’t get done, but if he does go to LAA, I think he’ll get 130-150 IP

1:59

Pat: Can you elaborate on what it means to be a Driveline guy? Thanks.

2:00

Paul Sporer: He works with Driveline baseball, the pitching academy that uses cutting edge data to improve pitchers – https://www.drivelinebaseball.com/

2:00

rainmaker: Do you think we’ll be able to tell if the ball is juiced by pre-season results?

2:00

Paul Sporer: No, not really… unfortunately

2:00

I am the Walrus: Who is a better 3 year keeper?  Hiura or Meadows,

2:00

Paul Sporer: They’re reeeaaallllyyy close… I lean Hiura slightly

2:00

HappyFunBall: This is THE YEAR that Byron Buxton is finally going to put it together and stay healthy …. right?

2:00

Paul Sporer: Probably not, but I think his price is fair enough to take the shot

2:00

Coney: Whats your guess on inning count for Kluber?  Are you worried about the balky knee?

2:01

Paul Sporer: 180… I have some concerns on his health, but I think they’re already built into his price

2:01

seth r: Joc Pederson get a bump if he ends up in LAA? Seems like it may a bit more PT?

2:02

Paul Sporer: Not really, no. He can’t hit lefties, so there’s no reason the Angels should push him into lefty PA. His move is pretty neutral. There’s a juicy RF wall in LAA that he could benefit from, but I’m not moving him in my rankings

2:02

Chip: What are your thought on Maeda in a H2H league? You expect the Twinks to jerk him around less?

2:02

Paul Sporer: Big fan and I don’t think they’ll really have the luxury to take him out of the rotation in Sept. to manipulate his IP/starts and save money like LAD did

2:02

Dick Slapperman: I keep juggling C Sale’s stats and talent with his injury/age history and being in Boston another year…help me out here!

2:03

Paul Sporer: I’ve been buying in early drafts and we’ll get some clarity in spring. if he’s looking like Sale off the rip, his price will soar and he’ll be somewhere in the 4th-6th SP off the board range

2:03

Chip: Pomeranz is Hader-lite in middle relief this year. Yay or nay?

2:03

Paul Sporer: Ya I can see that

2:03

Scott TINSTAAPP: Are you entering the Main Event this year?  Online or live draft if so?

2:03

Paul Sporer: I am… live in Vegas!

2:03

Biggy: Which is most likely to bounce back:  Kimbrel, Jansen, Edwin Diaz?

2:03

Paul Sporer: Diaz

2:04

Biggy: What do you think happens with Carlos Martinez this year?  Closer or starter?

2:04

Paul Sporer: Early reports suggest starter opportunity with closer fallback

2:04

Sonny: Last keeper spot, same cost who you got Montas or Carrasco?

2:04

Paul Sporer: I looove Montas so I’m going to lean his way but they are literally 21 (Montas)/22 (Carrasco) in my rankings so you can pick your personal preference

2:05

Dick Slapperman: What’s the best-case scenario for V Robles this year?  Any way he goes to an All-Star game or something similar?

2:05

Paul Sporer: Best case is development in his bat that leads to a .310 AVG/100+ R/22-25 HR/40+ SB

2:06

Biggy: Are we overcorrecting on the steals market?  I don’t see Trea Turner as a top 30 guy.  I know he steals bases, but he hits .280 usually and is small and frail.  Why would I pass on JDM for this guy?

2:10

Paul Sporer: No we’re not. They matter and you need them. With Turner in particular, you get them without sacrificing everything else as you do with someone like Mallex Smith. Turner played 122 games and still finished 26th last year, he’s definitely a top 30 guy and I fully back his 1st round ADP.

With few SB you don’t need as many to compete so you take someone like Turner and maybe one other guy set for 20+ and then you’re pretty good to go assuming you’re getting knick-knack contributions elsewhere around your roster (5-8 from a handful of guys).

Regarding Turner v. JD, for me it’s a why not both situation as JD is regularly available in the 2nd round. We did exactly that in a 15-teamer on Tuesday night in LABR: [color: var(–color-text-link-visited);]

2:10

the dude: Mitch Garver or Gary Sanchez?

2:10

BarryBondsJuicedForOurSins: More annoying guy in your league: the dude who spams trade offers or the dude who never responds?

2:11

Paul Sporer: Ooh that’s close… I’d say never respond guy. At least spammster is active

2:11

tacopocket: sorry – so  robles/meadows/olson/verlander and who’s the 5th – villar ar $19?  or rendon at $32?  You kicked suarez out, right?

2:12

Paul Sporer: Gimme Rendon. I did kick Suarez bc of the shoulder ($14 is still pretty good, but gimme the lock in Rendon)

2:12

Ken Giles Right Hook: Can we please wiah Yasiel Puig to COL into existence? If not them, Pittsburgh because 🎆

2:12

Paul Sporer: Colorado would just fuck it up

2:12

Biggy: About the SB:  they are also far more volatile than the other categories.  Look at Villar!  Even Trout!  Give me the safer power numbers and try to adjust

2:13

Paul Sporer: But they aren’t volatile with the guy you had the issue with: 33-46-43-35, soooo….

2:14

Paul Sporer: and I’m not sure Villar is as good an example as you think. He had the 62 spike year and fell to 23 the next year in a disastrous season that also saw him log 243 fewer PA. He’s at 35 and 40 in the last two years.

2:14

back me up here: Do you expect Schwarber to repeat 2019?

2:15

Paul Sporer: I do and there might even be a tinge of upside

2:15

Rocco: Are you a buyer of Laureano?  Seems like he can take that next level?

2:15

Paul Sporer: Big time, I was a huge fan last year and I’m buying right back in this year

2:15

Boston wants what In addition???: It would be really funny if the Betts deal fell through

2:16

Paul Sporer: It kinda would even though I’m really excited about Maeda & Stripling in their new homes

2:16

Wadz: Starlin Castro had a great 2nd half for MIA.. any chance he becomes somewhat more relevant in DC?

2:17

Paul Sporer: Yes I think he’ll be a solid glue guy with the Nats

2:17

Dereck: $36 Scherzer or $27 Strasburg

2:17

Paul Sporer: Stras with the $9 savings

2:17

Longrod von Hugendong: Forrest Whitley…I can’t see the forest from the trees here.  His arm is spruced-up but his career seems to be dead as an oak. Can he turn over a new leaf??

2:18

Paul Sporer: Dig the puns but there’s no world where his career is dead. The way the fantasy community turns on prospects is hilarious. Although Whitley hasn’t gotten the full wrath bc he didn’t fail at the majors, but I still have quite a bit of confidence in him and I’ll happily buy cheaply in 2020

2:19

Biggy: Keeping Vlad, Soto, JDM, Verlander, DeGrom, Javy Baez for sure.  Two more for a roto:  Jose Castillo, Machado, Goldie?

2:20

Paul Sporer: You mean Luis Castillo? If so, I’ll go him and Goldy (1B is a little light at the top end)

2:20

Ryu Rocks in Toronto: or does he get rocked?

2:20

Paul Sporer: If he’s healthy I think he’ll be solid. Obv not repeating ’19, but low-to-mid 3.00s ERA with great WHIP

2:20

Chad: Pivetta…Changes real?

2:20

Paul Sporer: We gotta see in Spring Training

2:20

Longrod von Hugendong: ATC has Darvish for a measly 11 Quality Starts this year…that can’t be right, can it?  What would your guess be?

2:23

Paul Sporer: Seems really light. That’s how many he had last year, but 8 were in the 2H. I’d tab him for 13-15 at least

2:23

Bring Back DeSpaniel Hair: Paul, what your guess about the state of the ball in 2020? Torn on strategy in H2H redraft

2:23

Paul Sporer: I’m just operating as it being similar to ’19. Even if it’s not, it can’t really hurt us

2:23

Anonymous: what was the reasoning for Story > Trea Turner again?

2:24

Paul Sporer: Coors Field and more power

2:24

Hill: Listenening To the LABR podcast  you and batflip crazy have become my favorites

2:24

Paul Sporer: Thank you so much! Toby (Batflip) is awesome

2:24

Johnny5Alive: Who should i trust more $10 Neris or $19 Osuna, or should i just keep both and go into season with 2 closers?

2:25

Paul Sporer: Definitely gotta trust Osuna more, but I’m open to keeping both if it fits and then just ignoring RPs the rest of the way except for maybe a flier in the reserves

2:25

Anonymous: I demand an explanation as to why people are drafting Craig Kimbrel as an RP1!

2:26

Paul Sporer: Smart enough to not just think his career is over based on 20 poor IP from last year?

2:26

Dildo Shwaggins: Soler or Hiura or Luzardo in a keeper league?

2:26

Paul Sporer: Hiura or Soler for me. I loooove Luzardo, but I lean hitter in cases like this

2:26

Rocco: Hey Paul!  I have a round 24 keeper value for edman, t. rogers, and hampson….which do you prefer if you had to choose one??  Thanks!!

2:27

Paul Sporer: I’m a sucker for Hampson and he can’t hurt you at this price.

2:27

Cito’s Mustache: I have two keeper spots left in a 12-team weekly points league. Help me choose between Severino, Bauer, Lynn, Giolito, Gallen. Thx!

2:27

Paul Sporer: Gimme Sevvy & Gio if prices are equal

2:27

MattyK: Is it just me or are luis robert’s projections unusually high For a rookie across all sources?

2:28

Paul Sporer: They’re pretty aggressive. He has a fantastic skillset, though, so I get it

2:28

MattyK: Where can i find command and stuff ratings for pitchers?

2:29

Paul Sporer: You’d have to ask Eno on that. I think one of the two isn’t public facing, but he usually has a link to the other (I think it’s the command that is public)

2:29

Toss a Coin to your Pitcher: Hey Paul! 12 team 13 team mix keeper $260 budget: Is it an okay strategy to keep Freddy Peralta for $1? Thanks!

2:29

Paul Sporer: Nah, he’ll be a buck at the draft table, too

2:29

DP: Keeper debate: Willie Calhoun vs. Bryan Reynolds. Thx.

2:29

Paul Sporer: I think Calhoun has a bit more upside with the power

2:30

HappyFunBall: I vastly prefer trying to fill my lineup with 10-SB guys and aiming for 3/4 place, rather than paying oodles for a couple speedsters and hoping they stay healthy.  Those guys who do other things well and also kick in the odd SB are not coveted for their speed, but they add up!

2:31

Paul Sporer: Ya that’s a viable method that many go with. I understand the health piece, though with many of the guys like Turner, they still offer a ton of SBs even in seasons where they don’t play all year so I think that injury risk is largely overstated

2:31

Hill: Why all the love for Muncy. Steamer hates his BA and plenty of contingincies for power, even mouse at 2nd base?

2:34

Paul Sporer: Back to back 35 HR seasons, triple eligibility, in a great lineup, 2 RBI shy of 100/100 last year, hit .263 and .251 so I’m not sure why Steamer is coming in at .241, but even if he’s down at that level, it doesn’t kill his value. I like Moose, too, but they’re not even a full round apart, so it’s not like Moose is some bargain version of Muncy

2:34

Scott TINSTAAPP: Nice one on the Main, good luck!…my co-manager and I are going back in this year (online), we finished 82nd overall (no thanks to Stanton & Severino!), hoping to get in those sweet money positions!

2:35

Paul Sporer: That’s awesome, man, well done. My team was a disaster. Just never got going in the right direction. I’m shaving my league load down further again this year and really zeroing in on a tighter group of leagues, though attention had nothing to do with my Main Event failings last year. I spent tons of time on it and it was still shit lol

2:35

HappyFunBall: Considering an offer of Nelson Cruz + (minor things) for DJ LeMahieu in a keep forever. Dare I trust Gavin Lux as my 2B?

2:36

Paul Sporer: I love Lux so I’m cool trusting him and thus I’m cool with this trade. (I also love LeMahieu, but Cruz is a total stud, too)

2:36

CT: So good to have you back in the chatroom, Paul. $260 budget, 12tm 6×6 roto… Keep 2: W. Buehler ($20), L. Castillo ($20), J. Bell ($6). I feel like that Bell price is a can’t miss, but I love the thought of shoring up my rotation out of the gate (my third keeper is Juan Soto for $20, figured that was a no-brainer)

2:37

Paul Sporer: Ya you gotta go Bell at $6, just too juicy. As for the SPs, I have Buehler ranked higher so at the equal price, I gotta go with him

2:37

solerpower: After 48 jacks and a 136 wRC+, I get the feeling that people are leery of Soler this year.  In a 12 team hth 5×5 (OBJ) league, is he worth one of my 5 keeper (at 23rd round value) over someone like Nola (7 rd)., Meadows (11th), or CMart (17th)?

2:39

Paul Sporer: There’s some trepidation with Soler off just the one year of excellence, but I could see him as a spring riser (currently around 85-90 ADP… could move to 65-70 IMO), especially if he pops a few Cactus League homers right off the rip. You should def keep him at that price over all those guys with Meadows being closest, but 12 rounds being too juicy to pass up

2:39

Phil : Hey whats your favorite auction strategy? Star and scrubs or more balanced?

Paul Sporer: It definitely depends on size and format, but I generally lean stars & scrubs

2:39

Guest: NL only 10 team keeper league. Last keeper spot up for grabs. $12 Josh Bell, $1 Lamet, or $1 Hampson?? Thanks!!

2:40

Paul Sporer: Bell is once again priced too nicely to pass up

2:40

Bookie Metts: Rank them: Canning, Keller, Kopech

2:40

Eduardo: Am I wrong to push Walker Buehler above Scherzer and Verlander? I just feel like THIS is his year. Get your guys early, right?

2:41

Paul Sporer: I don’t have a problem with it. He’s 5th for me which is right there and their ages adds some uncertainty to the mix

2:41

Rocco: At similar value do you have a preference for Greinke or Kershaw?

2:41

Paul Sporer: I’d lean Kersh if priced similarly

2:41

Jono: Am I crazy to want to keep Mallex Smith at 5% of my budget in a 5×5 Roto? 40 SBs aren’t easy to come by despite the drain in the other categories.

2:42

Paul Sporer: Not crazy, no. I’m not a fan, but I get it… the SBs are locked and there’s even a reasonable case that he improves his wretched AVG from last year

2:42

Hank: Any new features you’re hoping to see in MLB The Show 20?

2:42

Paul Sporer: The defensive and hitting features they covered yesterday were tops on my list. They’re listening to the community and attacking our biggest fixes. Also the triple legend reveal of Maddux/Smoltz/Glavine was pure fire

2:42

cavebird: You are clearly all in on Frankie Montas.  Care to give a guesstimate projection for him to plug into my program to make me feel better about trading for him?  (IP; ERA, WHIP, K, W)

2:46

Paul Sporer: 190, 3.27, 1.14, 206, 15

2:46

Drew: Homer Bailey in Minnesota / Rick Porcello in New York – who’s going to disappoint me more? Say neither. 😉

2:46

Paul Sporer: Porcello… that defense behind sooooorrrkkss

2:46

champ: Should I keep J. Bell over Kluber or Bauer in 16 team H-H league? Keeping Montas, Bieber already at SP

2:47

Paul Sporer: Yes, it’s the Keep Josh Bell chat!

2:47

Anonymous: Sharps keep laughing at us for using ADP, but like… what’s the alternative? Learn everyone in the player universe’s projected stat line?!

2:47

Paul Sporer: People are lying if they say they don’t use ADP is some capacity. Don’t get married to it and only draft off of it, but you NEED to know where the market is. It’d be totally foolish to purposely ignore it going into a draft

2:50

Paul Sporer: OK, y’all, great 2020 debut, but I gotta get going. Again, chats will be on Wednesdays going forward! Thanks so much for coming out! Follow me on Twitter (@sporer), Twitch (sporer), and Instagram (p_sporer). I’ll be streaming on Twitch later today and you can definitely come by and ask questions about fantasy there. Have a great weekend!

RE: Command+ and Stuff: Eno has Command+ available to The Athletic subscribers in a spreadsheet that he (or someone else) maintains. Stuff is from Driveline and isn’t publicly facing as they sell the product using it (but they allowed Eno to peek under the hood at it and he factors it into his pitcher rankings).
