Paul Sporer: Calhoun, assuming it’s Willie. And Margot

Joe: Would you trade Conforto ($7) in an NL only for any of Weaver ($4), Gohara ($1), or Godley ($8)?  can only keep if they make start the year on MLB team (or DL)

Paul Sporer: I’m pretty concerned about Conforto’s shoulder so while I usually lean hitter over pitcher, but in this case I’d keep Godley or Weaver. I think I’d lean Weaver at half the price

Bryan: Dynasty league,  would you take Chase Anderson, Luis Castillo, or Godley?

Paul Sporer: Godley is hella popular today! But I gotta go Castillo here. He’s my highest rated of the three for ’18 and the youngest of the bunch

Joe: on XM last night, Dave Roberts said Grandal would get more ABs that Barnes.  Barnes still worth $4 in an NL only?

Paul Sporer: Ya, for sure. A C2 with his kind of upside definitely works at that price. And there’s still 2B potential for Barnes to get PAs

Paul Sporer: I’d keep Shark. Volume is big in a points league and he’s a workhorse. Major upside if he can give up fewer HRs, too

Jack: Which Justin are you more bullish on in 2018 – Smoak or Bour?

Paul Sporer: Smoak. Even with regression, he should be pretty solid. Bour hasn’t yet reached 450 PA and he turns 30 this year

Seth : What’s up Paul! $260 cap, 5 keepers. I’m taking over a new team. Would Marwin Gonzalez be worth a keeper at $10? I’m only keeping Severino and Osuna as of right now.

Paul Sporer: Ya I think so. I think even a *sharp* regression would be worth $10 — I see 16-18 HR, 65-70 RBI, .270 AVG, and a handful of SBs (6-9)

CBg: Traded $10 Bellinger for a $17 dollar Carrasco and $20 Pollack, I made a good choice up upgrade pitching?

Paul Sporer: Ya that’s a nice deal for 2018

Bo: My home league (5×5 12-team mixed H2H) always goes on a crazy closer run and drafts mid- and low-tier closers far above their ADP (although the top 5 or so go where expected). In that context, how would you approach saves? Try to get 2 of the top 5 guys? Punt saves in the draft and chase them on waivers instead?

Paul Sporer: Surprised to see them aggressively chased in H2H as it seems like the easiest format to punt or de-prioritize them. The closer pool is pretty weird right now as I don’t think there’s a ton of certainty as even the studs have some questions. Grab one solid guy, get an undervalued upside guy (Melancon, Treinen), and then a backup spec late (Kela, Givens, Boxberger, N.Jones, Minter)

Kyle: Is Chapman still a top 5 closer? Top 10? Top 15? Top…

Paul Sporer: Yes, especially with the aforementioned uncertain market. I understand some of the nervousness around Chappy, but even a lesser version is still a beast

Pie: In a dynasty start up, how aggressively would you take prospects?

Paul Sporer: I’d be open to reaching on the Acuñas and Robleses (Roblii?) of the world, but I wouldn’t be going too bananas with far off prospects in the first 8-10 rounds

808: why did you have to tease Eno so much to the point that he had to leave, paul, why?!!?

Joe: Better asset to keep: Nick Williams or Altheer?

Paul Sporer: I’d go Nick Williams

Paul Sporer: Yes, I think so 🙁 I was so excited about him, too. Of course just bc he starts in the minors doesn’t mean he’s down there all year. Granderson & Morales aren’t youngbloods and Grichuk has issues of his own so I think he’ll get a chance at some point

Craig : Thoughts on Jake Flaherty and Gohara? Do you think they both start the year in the bigs?

Paul Sporer: I think both are slated to start in Triple-A barring an insane ST that forces their way in, but I see Atlanta having openings sooner than later and Gohara getting a look at some point in April

Eric: 5×5 ottoneu league, current rotation is Scherzer/Verlander/Carrasco/Godley/Morton/E. Santana.  Only have like $30 for auction.  Am I too thin?

Paul Sporer: No that’s a helluva rotation. Get a couple solid specs w/your $30 to round it out since you’ve got 2 older aces and Morton’s health record, but I like that setup

Bryan: Would you rather have an $11 Willson Contreras or a $14 Aaron Nola in a 1 catcher league?

Paul Sporer: I love Nola, but probably gotta go Contreras at that price, even in a 1-C league

808: Jose De Leon…what do you make of him this year?

Paul Sporer: Very interesting post-hype guy arm who costs virtually nothing. He should be the first one up if he doesn’t secure a spot out of Spring

Paul Sporer: Ugh, now I’m mad I answered your question. I hate repeat questioners

Nathan: Chances that Wilson Ramos is a top 5 fantasy catcher? Top 3?

Paul Sporer: Certainly possible, he’s one of my main C targets as he’s usually the 9th or 10th C off the board

Erik: Obviously, you adjust to how any individual draft is going, but in general, in roughly what rounds to you plan on drafting your top 3 starters? How about your top 2 relievers?

Paul Sporer: Ya it usually depends on league format, too. I’m looking to have 2 SP and 1 CL in the first 10 rounds, but then it’s wide open from there

Paul Sporer: Working on them and rolling them out in a couple weeks!

Tears for Fears: Where do you think Darvish ends up?

Paul Sporer: No clue at this point, but I’ll say Minnesota

Paul Sporer: All of them? I’m not sure how many keepers everyone has, but if it’s only cutting one, I’ll say Swanson

Erik: Are people being overly cautious with Judge? He was a top-three earner last year, and he’s going around the back of the first round/early second round, it looks like.

Paul Sporer: I don’t think so. I’d go the other way and suggest he’s being overdrafted. He was amazing in ’17, but there’s very little chance he gets *better* and regression could be particularly cruel given the real holes that still exist in his swing

JD15: I thought Matt Carpenter was penciled in at 1B…?

Paul Sporer: 3B

Tone: Paul, is there a $25 gap between Betts and Yelich? Looking at projections and it’s hard to see that. I can keep one or the other.

Paul Sporer: Wait, what? No, definitely not. If one is $25 more expensive than the other, keep the cheaper one for sure

Charlie: Why do you love Mazara?

Paul Sporer: Because he’s a really good hitter who acquitted himself well in two full seasons as a 21 and 22 year old. Definitely needs to improve vL to be a big time stud, but I think the fantasy baseball community is too harsh on guys who come up and aren’t insta-studs.

Paul Sporer: A god? Probably not, but the same very good player he was in his own day

Paul Sporer: Yes, I like this trade and the reasoning. I dig Murphy in general, but I’m concerned about the health and still really like Cole

Gary: I don’t really get your comments on the pod about Godley. You wouldn’t blame people for taking Blake Snell over him? Go look at Godley’s numbers last year. K/9, Sw Str, GB%, WHIP, SIERA, xFIP, etc. is all very good/elite (Top 25). And probably only get better with humidor. Can you explain your thoughts deeper on him?

Paul Sporer: Ya, no, I’m aware of his numbers from last year. I’ve been hyped on Godley for a good while now. But that doesn’t mean he’ll just repeat those numbers, that’s not how it works.  I don’t think the true talent of the two is so far off that Godley MUST be valued ahead of Snell. Drafting solely off the previous year’s numbers is never a great strategy

Paul Sporer: Ya he’s definitely the guy headed into the season. He has some rope, but he seems to lose the job for a spell every year. Solid mid-tier closer, but I wouldn’t take him in the top 100 which is where he’s currently going

1B value: I’m often laughed at post draft year after year as I’ve settled for E.Hosmer in 3 out of the last 4 years.  He’s not horrible, but a move to SD would worry me.  Thoughts on Hosmer?  Weak stock, or an undervalued 1B?

Paul Sporer: Why would a move to SD worry you? KC is a horrible park and SD’s arrow is up while KC’s is down so I think it’d be a slightly net positive move

Paul Sporer: No you don’t. You’ve been told multiple times that spamming your stuff is no way to get noticed. Put out good stuff and it’ll find an audience. Promote it on your social media and try to engage people in convos on social media and then they may check out your stuff. When you’re ONLY self promoting, you instantly turn people off

Paul Sporer: $5 max. I don’t like extending SPs as a general rule, but $6 is still a great price

Hi: Paul….love you…18 team, 5 keeper points league. Thinking about trying a new strategy this year because guys in my league don’t value pitching. Im currently keeping Carrasco, Castillo, Cole, Samardzja, and Ray. All for $67 of a 260 budget. Am I going to much with arms or do you think it could work?

Paul Sporer: Very interesting. I’d need to know the potential bats you’re bypassing to feel fully confident in an answer, but that cost for those five is very good so I can get behind it. Still plenty of $$ to buy bats

tacopocket: mets can’t sign lomo.  smith, gonzalez and bruce are at 1B.   we already have nimmo on the bench so Of is pretty crowded too.  Can lomo play 2B or 3B?   Or catcher?

Paul Sporer: Ya it’s crowded, but I’m not sold on AGonz being anything and don’t love Smith, either. Think Bruce is starting in the OF. I get what you’re saying. I was just scanning roster resource for the crappiest 1B starter and saw AGonz

Harry: Somebody should point out to whiny agents that it takes two to make a market.  Things will start to move when the top guys holding out get realistic.  Disagree?

Paul Sporer: I mean, it depends what they’re being told is “realistic”. I certainly don’t look at arguably the most stagnant market ever and come out thinking the players are the issue

Paul Sporer: Pretty good I’d assume. I can’t imagine why they’d want to move him off SS at any pt in the season

RIch: Paul keep 6, 11 team mixed obp league. Can lock guys in up to 3 years. Too early to go three on Albies at $6,11,16. Is two a safer play or would you throw him back in and hope to get him under 6 at auction?

Paul Sporer: I can’t imagine him going under $6 so I’d definitely keep him. I’d probably go $11.
