Paul Sporer: Norris, but in the same thick tier so it’s more preference than discernible differences

Gucci: Hey Paul with the news that Joe Ross is coming up next week to face ATL what is your projection for him ROS? Seems Nats will have a tight leash on him

Paul Sporer: They only called up Guthrie because Ross hadn’t been down for 10 days and they needed an arm. He’s their fifth starter. I think he can get 165+ IP after 128 last year

Colin: Do you think velocity gains/losses matter more for hard-throwers than soft tossers(like kuma)?

Paul Sporer: I think the real answer is that it’s case-by-case, but I’d think soft-tossers could have more issues since they were already working with a smaller margin for error at the lower velo.

Paul Sporer: Not sweating it at all. Established players get at least a month before I even blink on their numbers.

Paul Sporer: Talent seems legit, but health has regularly been the issue so I’m not going crazy

Texas Dolly: Is Leclerc the guy to stash in the Texas bullpen right now?

Paul Sporer: He’s a deep league stash only right now. Matt Bush when healthy is easily the #2, but his health and Jeffress having done it before had me leaning his way, but then he lost that game that Dyson blew the other night. And the only reason I give credence to the “done it before” stuff is because that was cited re: Tony Barnette, who supposedly would’ve gotten the chance if a true save opp had come up the night that LeClerc got his 2-inning save.

Paul Sporer: In summary, it’s Dyson, Bush, Jeffress, Barnette, LeClerc when all healthy and going, but right now it seems to be Dyson, Barnette, Jeffress, LeClerc with Bush TBD on the shoulder stuff

J.T.: When do you expect Bradley Zimmer to get the call up? I’m debating if I should snag him now or wait a few more weeks…

Paul Sporer: Around Memorial Day if he performs in AAA. Don’t sleep on Greg Allen, though

Paul Sporer: I’m not sweating him yet

Paul Sporer: Btw, Edwin Encarnacion has some high profile shitty plate appearances (2 GIDPs in that home opener) and people seem to freak out over him during his annual slump, so he might also be a nice buy low. Though on the other hand, I don’t love guys in year 1 of a big contract w/a new team

George is Curious: Assuming you have a few glaring needs to fill and know that virtually every other team in your league does as well, what’s the most % of your budget do you consider dropping in week one of free agency? For context, it’s a $260 11-team NL-only league, and it’s a deep enough league that there aren’t many good options available.

Paul Sporer: It’ll always come back to what’s available. Don’t force it. If the right player is there, you jump and you can spend 30-50% on a guy (like if Anthony Rendon was cut or something insane), but otherwise you should be high end 10-15% on a player you really like. Sounds like you’re not super keen on anyone, so 5-10% bids on guys you’re interested in

Paul Sporer: Adjust a bit for your league since you said they also have needs. Some leagues don’t have big FAABers so they can be less aggressive, others have INSANE FAAB periods and have to 1.5-2x the estimates we give

Tres Bien: I’m intrigued by Trey Mancini. He seems like a guy the Orioles should be starting more often. You a fan?

Paul Sporer: Big pop, but lots of swing-and-miss. Will hit HRs if the playing time is there, but who should he really play over?

Mel: Start or bench Nola @ a hot Washington team and Strasburg today? 10-team league with 180 GS limit.

Paul Sporer: With the limit, I think it’s a fair question, but I’d start him.

Rick: I can’t get good players on Diamond Dynasty ?

Paul Sporer: Have you started grinding conquest? There are amazing rewards there

Colin: What pitcher do you want to call a fraud at this very moment

Paul Sporer: Fraud bc they’re performing worse than last year or bc they’re over their head right now? If it’s the latter, it’s definitely Andrew Triggs and Jason Vargas. Hisashi Iwakuma doesn’t deserve his early ERA at all, either

Roger Dodger: Does Gallo become the starter in LF once Beltre returns?

Paul Sporer: I don’t think so, Tim

Gucci: What’s your take on Severino? Finally realizing his potential of just flashing it yet again. Looks like he’s a 2 start SP next week vs CWS and BAL

Paul Sporer: Entirely too early to tell. Remember, many were ready to declare him realizing the potential after 62.3 IP in ’15 and he clearly wasn’t that good. Intriguing arm for sure, but more ups and downs are ahead. Only 2 pitches and a persistent HR issue.

Sleepless in Seattle: Can Tayler Motter find regular playing time in the Mariners’ lineup even after Segura returns?

Paul Sporer: Would it really matter if he could?

Paul Sporer: Half-joking. He could pop a few homers and run a bit, though we haven’t seen a single SB attempt in 40 MLB games

Mackannin: I dont know what to do with Vincent Velazquez. is he going to be up and down all year a la Pineda?

Paul Sporer: Yes, he’s just 25 still and many believed the bullpen was his future when he was coming up through the minors. I think the tools are there to start, but he’s figuring it out on the job

Andy: Anybody in the Rangers pen you’d be rostering right now in 10-team?

Paul Sporer: Probably only Dyson if I was desperate. He hasn’t been removed from the job yet.

Paul Sporer:

Bob Loblaw: When the Royals finally get the memo and send Mondesi down, is Merrifield the guy who starts in his place? If so, can he improve upon last year’s numbers?

Paul Sporer: Tough crowd, he’s gotten 30 PA! That said, it hasn’t been great and he is just 21 so it will be a short-lived trial if he doesn’t turn it around. I think he gets another week to 10 days

Paul Sporer: Hold, upside is huge

They’re…..Not so Great!!!: Who do you like between Mahtook and Collins? Any fantasy upside to be had with either?

Paul Sporer: Collins if I have to choose and only bc he has the platoon advantage

Bill: Are you concerned about Villar? He’s been striking out like crazy, not drawing walks, chasing more and making less contact, etc. but he does have 3 home runs already. Do you think he’s just changed his approach to try and add power?

Paul Sporer: Not overly concerned. In fact, I’d probably entertain a buy low if there was a real discount.

Ed: Is it easier for high contact, low power prospects to grow into power than it is for power hitting, low contact prospects to cut their strikeout rate?

Paul Sporer: I would think so generally speaking because part of the strikeout rate of power hitters is built-in because they get into deep counts looking for that pitch to hit and/or get pitched differently because of the power. It isn’t always just a slow swing or anything like that.

Steve-o: Hello there. What type of talent would you target in exchange for Tanaka? I have too much pitching (H2H points).

Paul Sporer: These are too vague to give useful answers, I’m sorry. There are just sooo many variables, but maybe look back at ADP and look for guys you’re interested in around him: http://hosted.stats.com/mlb/adp.asp — many still use draft day pricing as a guide when making early trades

Paul Sporer: I’d be careful in thinking you have too much pitching 10 games into the season, though. That can change SO quickly. You hear the phrase you can never have too many pitching applied to real teams, but it applies in fantasy, too

Yoaning For More: Other than Moncada, would you be so kind as to name two prospects in each league that are likely to be called up sooner rather than later and should be stashed immediately?

Paul Sporer: Bradley Zimmer for Cleveland, Lewis Brinson for Milwaukee

SP stash: Thoughts on Honeywell possibly coming up before DeLeon? And if so, how soon? Honeywell has been solid

Paul Sporer: It’s just not TB’s m.o. to do such, especially w/Honeywell in AA and De Leon having already pitched in the majors

Chris: You a fan of Aaron Hicks? I liked him as a sleeper going into the year and he almost had the starting job until Judge finally started hitting. Now I’m not sure what to make of him.

Paul Sporer: Ya I love Hicks and was all over him last year. I’m always happy when I see him going off a bit at the dish. It’s really a matter of getting consistent playing time, which has eluded him thus far in his career save that one spell where he hit really well while playing every day. We’ll see if Judge’s K% is real, but if not then Hicks will need injury to Ellsbury or Gardner to get that regular PT. He’s a deep league stash or DFS play when in the lineup right now

Eric: Concern level on Nelson Cruz’s slow start? He’s at that age where it all could come crashing down

Paul Sporer: Virtually zero. Yes, he’s older, but man that would be an epic out of nowhere crash after three straight excellent seasons

Steve-o: Young Joc Pederson for Maeda (in a vacuum). Nice deal for which side?

Paul Sporer: I’d go for Joc

Ant: Adrian Gonzalez still a 10-team stick for you?

Paul Sporer: ya he gets his numbers and I’m not sure 1B is deep enough to jettison him. Maybe he’s CI now, but still holding

Pat: Paul, I’m starting Teheran tonight and I don’t know what to expect with the new park. He has amazing stats at-home in his career, do you think we can carry those over to SunTrust?

Paul Sporer: We won’t really know how SunTrust plays for a while, but I’m still starting Teheran everywhere… except maybe Coors in a 10-teamer, but I don’t sit strong #2s

C’est Moi: Anything to worry about with Edwin Diaz yet? Is Altavilla the guy to own if you’re looking for a handcuff?

Paul Sporer: Too early to be concerned, but yes Altavilla is someone to keep an eye on if Diaz struggles for another several weeks, especially if there are big meltdowns

Gorky: Is Aaron Judge viable as a 10-team bat where we start five outfielders?

Paul Sporer: Not for me. You can ride the wave if you have a spot open for injury, but I’d be willing to bet there are better bats on the wire

Rob: I have Healy and Panda as my 3B options in a 12 tm obp keeper. Any struggling 3B you believe in to try and pry away so I can drop Panda? Villar? thanks

Paul Sporer: If you can get Villar, I’d be interested. Rendon or Seager also worth inquiring on for a discount

Art: Is Manny Margot the real deal? Because, wow…

Paul Sporer: Real deal how? He might reach double-digit homers, but I like him as a speed option with decent AVG and runs (decent for SD at least)

Matthew: Can/will Billy Hamilton’s batting average really stick in the .300 range? Any reason to think this is an illusion?

Paul Sporer: It certainly *can* because his speed can cover some of the deficiency in actual hitting talent, but I’m not buying that just yet

Chris: In 10 keeper league was offered Arenado for Bregman, Arrieta, Urias & Trea Turner. Am I nuts for thinking this was an absurd request? I love Arenado but come on

Paul Sporer: LOL, ya that’s ambitious.

NY state of mind: Will Conforto work his way into the starting lineup soon? He’s been solid when given the opportunity. Have him play 1B I say.

Paul Sporer: Not unless there is a trade (unlikely at this pt) or injury. Duda playing well enough to hold 1B and then he’ll spot in at OF but unfortunately they have an abundance of lefties so there are no platoon options

Steve: drop Jankowski or David Peralta for Jimmy Nelson? H2H 12 man OBP instead of AVG and QS instead of W

Paul Sporer: No, I wouldn’t

Paul Sporer: I’m not moving on Shoemaker or Peralta yet. They have both shown legitimate high-level performance in the majors, they get more than 2 weeks before moving on

JD15: My pitching staff has some decent injury risk (Hill, Darvish, Salazar) should I look to be trading one so I don’t have a complete explosion?

Paul Sporer: You drafted them knowing you had the risk but also major upside, so why move out now? Stick with it.

Kevin: What are your thoughts on Zach Davies – getting beat up out there first couple starts.

Paul Sporer: I wasn’t a huge Davies guy coming in, but got some shares on the word of some I trust so I’m going to stick around a little longer. He wasn’t in the lineup in the mixer where I have him and the other is an NL Only so I don’t think cutting him would be wise just yet

Paul Sporer: It got pushed, but I promise it’s actually being worked on

Bottom tier: Can I count on Cobb, or would you consider him a well high since he’s healthy? He should have had a QS last time out, but was pushed beyond 7 innings for some odd reason

Paul Sporer: 15%? I’m just not sold that he’s all that different and thus we’re probably seeing one of his hot streaks as opposed to the start of a huge breakout

Paul Sporer: Paxton for sure. I have Paxton firmly ahead of Manaea

Paul Sporer: We usually see the team say they’ll ease a guy in so Reed could get another 1-2 the week after Familia returns, but I think you can safely drop him if you have other saves and there’s a bat you really like.

Paul Sporer: Yes and yes. He’s been amazing in the minors even surrounding that ugly debut last year

Boggs Challenger: Why isn’t Grienke given any more love? Outside of his four terrible starts in 2016 he was really good, plus his velo seems right in line with where he usually is at this point in a season. What gives?!?

Paul Sporer: Last year was tough and because it included injury, it pushed some off of him. Plus it’s a tough park. That said, he was still a top-30 guy who many believed could rebound. I liked the discount and thought he was a worthy investment

Paul Sporer: Morrison’s PT seems to be there so I’ll put him tops. Romine is a swing change guy as he acknowledged that 60% GBs just won’t get it done. Mancini or Davidson if you just want power absent anything else (including regular PT)

Paul Sporer: Ya it is, but I can see some AL-only viability (meaning his normal high-3.00s, low-4.00s, but with a few extra Ks)

Paul Sporer: LOL Avi roasted. Still only 26, so could still jump a bit, but I don’t see a star turn coming — maybe a .275-20-70 upside

Alex: Cut bait on S.Kelley in Washington? I figure maybe better served picking up pitching depth elsewhere than holding out hope with him

Paul Sporer: Ya, I’m fine cutting

Wade Boss Hog: What do you think of going with four aces (most teams in my league start six) with three long relief kinda guys (Archie, Raisel, Phelps and Rosenthal)? Should I go more traditional or is this a viable approach with more managers softening to the idea of long guys?

Paul Sporer: If traditional hasn’t been working for you, mix it up. Keep an eye on your K counts. The rates of those fireman types will be good, but make sure you’re still getting the proper quantity. But I like trying it. Been working up a list of these new firemen types, too

Bland: Is this the perfect time to buy low on Greg Bird or is there real reason for concern?

Paul Sporer: He was wildly overrated by late draft season so a return to earth in perception would be a good time to buy if you were a believer before the surge or even during the surge, but unwilling to pay the toll anymore.

Paul Sporer: There is regret among many of those buyers so dangle a more reliable option like Mike Napoli or Mitch Moreland and see where it goes. I’m not saying those will necessarily get him for 1-for-1, but the add-on won’t be substantial if they are selling low so I’d be OK with a 2-for-1
