Bryce Miller at home against the Athletics is a “moveable object against a resistable force” situation. Miller has been brutal but the Athletics are just so decimated by injuries. Depending on which projection you use, they don’t have a single player that projects as average ROS (ZiPS has McNeil at 100 wRC+ the rest of the way, the others have everyone under 100). Given the game is in Seattle, I’m probably leaning toward a start there. . . . but man has Miller been brutal. . .on the fence
😬 Over his last eight starts, he’s running a 7.19 ERA and a 6.30 FIP, good for 1.4 FGpts/IP. At home against the Athletics should be his easiest matchup since facing the Giants at home right after the All-Star break (17.4 pts in 5.2 innings), but I’m not sure I trust him at all right now.
Welp, Dan Wilson made the decision for us. . . .
Jake, As I set my weekly lineup, your column is often the first thing I check. I rarely quibble with how you rate each starter, but I do wonder why you label your second highest category as “Maybe”. My sense is that you’d have to be in an incredibly shallow league to have much leeway in not starting most of these guys — for me they are probables, not maybes. Anyhow, thanks for your advice. Dave
I appreciate the feedback. With just four ratings, “maybe/probable” needs to communicate starters I’m somewhere between 50% and 80% certain about starting. That’s a pretty wide range that I thought the word “maybe” fit better than “probable.” But you’re right, in most leagues, you’re probably starting the guys in the “maybe” column to hit SP caps or IP limits.
SF/Atl on 8/31 isn’t listed
I don’t normally list those one-off makeup games in the main table but I try to note them for the individual teams (i.e. Bryce Elder is listed against SFG in the “risky” column). For reference sake, ATL’s matchup rating vSFG is 100 and SFG’s matchup rating @ATL is 120.
