MASH Report (9/19/13)

Truthfully, not a whole lot to go over. The biggest key for the next couple weeks is to play players who will be in the starting lineup, not resting or calling the season done. One item which will probably come up is playoff bound pitchers who skip starts in order to rest.

Matt Harvey opted for rehab vice surgery. I am not 100% sure I like this decision. If I was his owner, I would be very skeptical of any 2014 production from him.

Matt Kemp finally returned with a week and half to go in the season. He doesn’t seem to be struggling in his two games. I think his upside outweighs the possible possible injury risk over the next week or so. Play him.

• Several players seem to be rushing back from the injuries to play in the post season like Jacoby Ellsbury, Jason Heyward, Justin Masterson (bullpen maybe) and Jaime Garcia. I would expect very little production out of this group if they return next week.

Pitchers Returning from the DL

Johnny Cueto’s velocity looks good after coming back from the DL.

His release point pattern was tightly grouped and his Zone% was respectable (48%). I see no reason not to start him next week.

J.J. Putz’s velocity was sitting on the low side in his one appearance

Sean Marshall’s velocity is also on the low side

Robert Coello’s velocity is way down.

• Finally, the New York Times looked if pitchers have a max speed they can throw a baseball.

Any thoughts on whether Dom Brown’s Achilles will effect his power? He had a double last night but I’m really looking for HR’s. For the weekend do you like him (he faces 3 RHP)or
Belt (@NYY and faces 2 LHP),
Rasmus (very hot lately but also faces 2 Boston lefty’s)
Lawrie (faces those same lefties)
