MASH Report (8/28/14)

• Heads up, the DL list is basically going to become a moot point in a few days when the rosters expand. Teams have no incentive to put a player on the DL unless it is to the 60-day DL to make room on their 40-man roster. I am going to have an unofficial DL list in the MASH Reports until the season’s end so people can know which players will or won’t be available.

Also, read up on players coming off the DL in September. Many will return without being 100%. John Mayberry is one such example. The Phils pretty much say he is still hurt and they don’t know where he will fit into their outfield.

Adam Wainwright has been dealing with dead arm

I am wondering if his elbow is getting ready to give out again. I will probably stay away from him in 2015.

Matt Garza looks to be coming back without being close to 100%.

Garza, who has not pitched since he strained a left rib-cage muscle in St. Louis on Aug. 3, will throw 45-50 pitches in Friday’s session. The plan for his comeback is being influenced by the Brewers’ schedule, according to Roenicke. That the team is in the middle of a west-coast road trip complicated the idea of sending Garza to an affiliate, and the fact rosters expand when the calendar flips to September on Monday simplified the task of getting Garza back into game shape.

“It helps us because we’re not worried about him having to pitch a game and go 5-6 innings for us,” Roenicke said. “If he goes 3-4 [innings], we’re fine because of what extra arms we’ll have up.”

I would just stay away from his first start  and see where he stands after it.

• The best chance for an Anibal Sanchez return is in late September.

Ausmus reiterated Wednesday that he hopes to have his starting pitcher back before the end of the season. That wish comes a day after Sanchez himself expressed concern over whether his regular season has come to an end because of the injury that forced him out of his last start on Aug. 8 in Toronto.

“It depends how fast I heal,” Sanchez said. “It’s nothing like they’re going to say, ‘All right, you’re going to wait for two weeks or one week.’ It’s nothing like that. It’s how fast does my body heal that area.”

He may be droppable in leagues with limited DL slots.

Homer Bailey is probably done for the season.

So is Yu Darvish

Yadier Molina
may be back with the Cardinals tomorrow.

Yan Gomes is also likely to return then.

Hyun-Jin Ryu may return starting for the Dodgers over the holiday weekend.

The day Yadi went down my first thought was that the Cards should have made a move for Jose (who know if they did or not).
