MASH Report (5/31/16)

Troy Tulowitzki looks to miss the minimum DL time with a strained quadriceps.

The veteran shortstop underwent an MRI on Saturday morning, with the results showing a low-grade strain, and Tulowitzki believes he will be back in the lineup after the mandatory 15-day period.

I am not 100% sure Tulo has an injury, but he could definitely use the break to get himself back together.

• The Diamondbacks placed both Shelby Miller (finger) and Rubby de la Rosa (elbow) on the DL.

Miller is 1-6 with a 7.09 ERA in 10 starts this year. He banged his hand on the Petco Park mound twice during his follow-through on April 16, causing his index finger to throb and forcing him to leave the game in the second inning.

Rubby De La Rosa will join Miller on the DL after he underwent an MRI on his right elbow on Friday morning. Hale said De La Rosa had been experiencing soreness in his triceps and it became more localized in the elbow after his last start against the Pirates on Wednesday.

Leonys Martin should only miss the required 15 days on the DL with a strained hamstring.

Mariners manager Scott Servais said Saturday that center fielder Leonys Martin’s strained left hamstring is expected to keep him sidelined for 7-10 days and that he should be fully healed and ready to play when his 15-day disabled list stint ends on June 10.

Danny Santana is again back on the DL with another hamstring injury.

Matt Cain is also out with a strained hamstring.

• It is crazy the number of hamstring injuries this year. Last year there was 27 total players placed on the DL for hamstring injuries. In just 1/3 of a season so far, 22 players have been placed on DL with a hamstring injury.

Dustin Ackley is on the DL with a sore shoulder. He is still getting tests done to find the injury’s full extent.

Cesar Vargas is on the DL for a sore elbow with more tests to come.

The encouraging start to Cesar Vargas‘ career hit an abrupt snag Sunday morning, when the Padres placed the 24-year-old right-hander on the disabled list with right elbow soreness.

The extent of the injury remains unknown. As of Sunday morning, Vargas was still waiting to be looked at by team doctors. It’s a tough break, nonetheless, for the young right-hander who looked very impressive in his first six starts.

Erick Aybar is out with a foot contusion.

Fastball velocity reading for pitchers returning from the DL

Yu Darvish averaged 94 mph on his fastball in his return from Tommy John surgery which was 1 mph higher than in his previous seasons.

Tim Lincecum is in the Angels minor league system getting a few games under his belt before going the MLB club. Here is a report on his velocity

From 2012 to 2014 he averaged 90.4, 90.2, and 89.6 mph on his fastball per season. Over those seasons, the average of his ERA estimators were 3.90. An 3.90 ERA would put him in the Joe RossJames Shields talent range (used Steamer ROS for comps). Not horrible.

Matt Thornton’s velocity is down 2 mph from last year.

Chris Young’s velocity is up, but it was in a relief appearance vice starting a game.
