MASH Report (4/27/15)
• Adam Wainwright may be done for the season with an Achilles injury. More information will become available later today.
An official season-ending diagnosis could come on Monday, after Wainwright undergoes an MRI on his ankle. The scan will determine the severity of the injury and give the Cardinals a better idea of the recovery timetable to follow. Most Achilles injuries required several months of rehab.
• Yasiel Puig is headed to the DL to help make his hamstring all better. The injury has been lingering for a couple weeks and the Dodgers decided “that’s long enough”.
• Christian Yelich may spend the minimal time on the DL with a bulging disk in his back.
• Ben Zobrist will miss four to six weeks with a torn meniscus in his knee.
• Hisashi Iwakuma will go on the DL for two to four weeks with a strained lat.
• Shane Victorino finally made it to the DL. This time it is for a strained hamstring.
• Ryan Flaherty heads to the DL with a groin strain.
• Expect lower production from Ryan Zimmerman as he plays through some plantar fasciitis.
• Matt Albers is headed to the DL with a broken pinky from the latest White Sox-Royals scrum.
• Matt Wieters’s return time seems to get pushed back and vagueness surrounds his return.
“I think the next step for Matt is to be able to continue on and each day feel the same way and each day make sure he feels like he’s 100 percent ready to go. He’s getting past a lot of the mental blocks,” said Russell, who watches Wieters on tape. “Will it be three weeks, will it be four weeks? It’s up to Matt and how he continues to progress and if we don’t have any setbacks. And knock on wood, so far so good.”

Velocity Readings from Pitcher Returning from Injury
• Drew Smyly’s average fastball velocity was the same as 2014.
• Josh Fields’s velocity looks fine.
Ian Kennedy’s is fine also.
• In Ricky Nolasco’s last rehab start, his velocity was up from his 2014 average (90.1 mph) and 2015 average (89.0 mph)
“Ricky threw the ball well,” Molitor said. “Velocity was 91-93, settled in around 92 and had no physical restraint, so [a decision is] going to be coming around here pretty soon.”

How do you feel about Zobrist once he comes back? I ask because he is a +30 year old coming back from a knee injury mid-season and I’m wondering if he is worth holding onto or not. Normally the answer would be an easy yes, but I also own Puig and LuCroy and hate having to use up one of my bench spots on a guy who may be out an extended period of time. Especially since the Puig timeline could be quick or could linger as Hamstring injuries can.
Depends on his replacement at SS. I am pretty much forced to keep him in one league with nothing on the waiver wire. If you have vaiable SS options though, feel free to drop him.

Does Zimmermann’s velocity drop (about 1.5 mph) combined with poor results worry you at all? With his K’s down, and his BB% up (+.87/9) do you think he might be hiding an injury?
Could be. Also he is over 4 years since his last TJS and the average time between TJS is between 4-5 years. He is a mess right now compared to his previous production levels.
I was sad to see Doolittle’s time frame. Last article read it was set for around two weeks. I saw here June. Where did you get your information? Thanks for keeping us up to date!

Umm, should we believe the area Nolasco velocity news? If his velocity dropped from last year, and then claims he’s hurt, and after minimal time he is all of a sudden gaining 2-4 mph?! Did they fix something in him, shot, therapy, etc? If rearing in the offseason didn’t help gain strength, how is this explainable over a handful of days?
Agreed, as a Twins fan I can’t help but feel like Molitor and or Ryan could just be trying to paint Nolasco in a good light since they still have a good chunk of cash left on that terrible contract.

What’s Wainright’s prognosis for next season? I’ve got him signed through next year in a keeper league and haven’t heard what to expect for recovery beyond “done for the year”.
Took Ryan Howard 8 months to come back, 33 year-old 350+ lbs Vince Wilfork played a full season at nose tackle 11 months after an achilles. Wainwright should pitch next year if he chooses to rehab, which I imagine he would, and recovery goes well.
It really depends on the cost. I wasn’t super high on him anyway because of the elbow issues from ’14. Tough call.
He’s signed for $8.5 against a $100 cap. The problem is that when you release a guy you eat half his money, so he’s probably still worth more than $4.25 even with the risk. Thanks for the input.
Definitely sucks though, lost him and McCarthy on the same night in a 16 team league. Not much out there to compensate for that kind of loss.
Homer Bailey might be headed for TJ as well. Tough week.
Don’t forget the Jaso update – put on 60-day DL. That wrist contusion been a pretty bizarre injury so far.
Depending on the severity of the faciitis, Zimmerman’s fantasy numbers shouldn’t be affected. It would take a rather extreme case to affect a swing.
