MASH Report (3/2/15)

Chris Sale will miss at a minimum of three weeks with a fractured foot. Then he will need to get up to speed before being able to start.

Chris Sale sustained an avulsion fracture on the lateral side of his right foot as the result of an accident at his Arizona home Friday. The left-hander is expected to be sidelined three weeks before resuming baseball activities.

Looking back at previous pitchers with foot injuries, they saw a 0.4 BB/9 and 0.25 ERA bump. Some loss of production, but not too much. The White Sox won’t need another starter until mid-April, so they may be able to go with four starters until then.

Melvin Upton will miss the first month of the season with an inflamed foot.

The MRI showed Upton is dealing with sesamoiditis (inflammation in the bone behind the ball of his foot). The veteran outfielder will spend the next two weeks in a short leg cast and then wear a walking boot for the following four to six weeks. If all goes according to plan with this timeline, he could re-sume baseball activities around the same time the Braves play their April 6 Opening Day game in Miami.

Early indications are that Upton will likely not return to Atlanta’s lineup until May 1.

His career is not even getting a dead cat bounce. It just keeps going down and down.

Addison Reed (sore shoulder) will miss a couple weeks of spring training and has a chance of starting the season on the DL.

If that’s the case, Reed said he would have no problem being ready for the April 6 opener, but manager Chip Hale said the club would err on the side of caution.

“We want him ready and the worst thing we can do is say, ‘Hey you’re going to throw two or three times and now we’re going to open the season,'” Hale said. “If that’s the case, he may have to start on the DL, but we’re a long way away from that.”

Brad Ziegler is dealing with his own injury (knee) so Evan Marshall may be in line for a few saves. Marshall is projected to have nearly 9 K/9 and a 3.50 ERA. He may be worth a few Saves.

Chase Utley may not be ready for the season’s start.

Michael Saunders will only miss 4-5 weeks because he agreed to have is meniscus removed vice repaired.

Ronald Belisario showed to the Rays camp with a fractured shoulder and will miss a few weeks.

How do Crisp and Pagan manage to hit the injured list already ? Surely Victorino is next.
