MASH (9/23/13)
Decent information is getting thin as the season winds down. This may be my last MASH for the regular season. For the offseason, I will be posting a weekly-ish article (probably on Thursday). I will update the players who will likely miss time in 2014. Also, I will go back can look at 2013 PAIN, SLOW, HURT and Zone% leaders. Also, any suggestion will be taken.
• Edward Mujica is dealing with fatigue and it doesn’t seem manager Matheny and him are on the same page. First from Mujica (Source for both quotes):
“My body feels like a little bit tired, and my release point is getting a little bit up,” Mujica said. “My thinking in my mind I’ve set it to get to the playoffs. One more month. Right now, I don’t want to think about (fatigue). Let’s finish it off, these nine games, and then if we make the playoffs think about the playoffs.”
And Matheny:
“Physically he said he’s fine. That’s all we can go off of,” Matheny said. “I don’t want to go there (with fatigue). I don’t want him going there. It’s something that is naturally talked about whenever you see a difference in anybody’s performance. He can control putting that out of his mind and go back to, ‘I’m going to make my pitch. I’m going to make my pitch one at a time.’ … We trust him every time he gets on the mound that he’s going to get the job done.”
The signs for fatigue/injury are there. In the PAIN leader board below, it shows his fastball velocity is down 1.7 mph and Zone% is down 10% points (54% to 44%). I think it may be smart for the Cards to rest him for a bit, but it looks like Matheny will keep pushing on with him.
• Just saw this weekend, but nothing has followed (that I can find). It will be interesting to see what the actual charges are.

• Edwin Encarnacion is out with wrist surgery. Wrist injuries are rumored to sap a player’s power and I have even made the statement in the past. I no longer think wrist injuries sap power doing a more detailed study. I would not be worried about E-5

I’m sure this has been asked before, but do you know of any teams checking your MASH or PAIN indicators, or do you expect any are?
None that I know of. I do know teams will look even more indepth than I do. I basically use them to locate possible hurt players and then try to verify.
